Sony’s smartphone business heats up: 9.6 million sold for $60 million profit

Sony Smartphone Sales 6.9 Million

Could Sony have finally cracked the smartphone market? Per The New York Times, Sony’s latest earnings report showed that the company sold 9.6 million smartphones over the last quarter, a significant improvement over the 7.4 million it sold over the same quarter in 2012. Even more impressively, the company’s mobile division turned a $60 million profit after posting a loss of $28.1 million in the same quarter last year. Given the difficulties that vendors other than Apple and Samsung have had making money on smartphones, Sony’s profitable quarter in the mobile market is certainly an accomplishment. The company has gotten help this year from its new Xperia Z smartphone that reportedly experienced strong early sales and came out before Samsung and HTC released their own flagship Android phones this past spring.
