Verizon wins spectrum goldmine as DOJ signs off on cable deal

Verizon Cable Spectrum Deal Approved

Verizon (VZ) is getting a fresh helping of spectrum to bolster its LTE services, as the Washington Post reports that the Justice Department has signed off on Verizon’s $3.9 billion Advanced Wireless Spectrum (AWS) license acquisition from cable companies Time Warner Cable (TWX), Comcast (CMCSA), Cox and Bright House Networks. The Post says that as a condition for approval, Verizon and the cable companies need to limit the scope of their joint marketing agreements in markets where the companies compete with one another for home broadband services. The deal will also allow for Verizon and rival carrier T-Mobile to engage in a spectrum swap that will give T-Mobile access to an additional 60 million potential subscribers.
