Google Music said to be floundering as user count declines each week

General

Google’s answer to iTunes, Spotify, Pandora and other popular digital music services may be in serious trouble. Reports surfaced last week suggesting Google Music wasn’t living up to expectations and now, according to music industry insider Wayne Rosso, the service may be in deeper trouble than initially thought. ”I’ve never seen anything like it,” an unnamed digital music executive told Rosso. “It’s astounding. It’s hard to believe that with an install base of over 200 million Android handsets they’re actually losing customers.” The well-placed source explained to Rosso that Google Music is losing customers on a weekly basis, and that it has gotten to the point where record label executives are worried Google may discontinue the service. First launched this past November, Google Music is a music store and cloud-based digital locker combination that allows users to purchase or upload music, and then stream songs to any computer or Android-powered device.

how are they measuring this? I assumed if you had a google account, you had google music.. I didn’t think you could “un-have” it… is this by sales? songs uploaded? songs streamed?

I guess when you are going off of “third hand” information, you don’t get details like that…

    1) Client for Android requires version 4.0 which is on maybe 1% devices.
    2) It’s limited to US only.

    So – duh…

The Google Music app is available for more than just Android 4.0+ devices. I had it on my Xoom running 3.2 and my Incredible running 2.3. I’m sure it will work on most earlier versions too. Please do some research before posting stupid things.

Google’s uphill battle is that even if they add functionality from all the other “alternatives”, you still have to do it way better in order to get people to switch from something they are already using and are invested in…

if it is off sales, then I readily admit that, since Google Music can automatically add songs when I add them to iTunes, I still buy my music from iTunes.

That does not mean that the cloud streaming services they provide are bad just because their store is not doing well.
