AT&T declares war on unlimited data users

mobile

AT&T’s stance on unlimited data is once again in the spotlight as a new wave of smartphone users cry foul over the carrier’s questionable policies. The nation’s No.2 carrier does not currently offer an unlimited data plan to its smartphone subscribers. Instead, there are three available data plans that include “soft” caps, allowing subscribers to continue using data services for additional fees after the soft cap is reached in a billing period. Users who have been with AT&T since before the carrier switched to tiered data plans — loyal customers who have in some cases maintained the same account in good standing for more than a decade — had the option to retain their unlimited data plans when AT&T first made the move to tiered plans. While heavy users were initially relieved when the opportunity to retain their old unlimited plans presented itself, that relief has quickly turned to disdain. Read on for more.

AT&T announced last summer that it planned to throttle unlimited smartphone data users beginning in October. The carrier said that the move would only affect the top 5% of heavy users, and it was a necessary measure in order to “manage exploding demand for mobile data.” The new policy meant that unlimited data users could continue using their handsets without data limits, but heavy users would see their data speeds reduced at a certain point each month if they used too much data. AT&T took particular care in not setting a specific limit that would have to be reached before throttling kicked in, but most typical users presumed it would be a number they would never hit.

When October came around, AT&T’s new policy took effect. That very same month, BGR began receiving tips from AT&T subscribers who received notices by SMS that they were nearing their monthly limits and that data speeds would soon be reduced. The peculiar thing, however, was that these subscribers hadn’t even used 2GB before receiving the notices; 2GB was the same amount of data afforded by AT&T’s top tiered data plan at the time.

Since October, there have been countless accounts of similar happenings. AT&T users in regions across the country are notified with the following SMS message that they are about to be throttled: “Your data usage this month places you in the top 5% of users. Use Wi-Fi to help avoid reduced speeds.”

What is most interesting about this new wave of complaints, however, is that subscribers are still getting notices that they are in danger of experiencing reduced data speeds as they approach just 2GB of usage in a single billing period. As of January 22nd, however, AT&T’s main smartphone data plan offers 3GB of data for $30 per month — the same fee unlimited data users are paying for their plans. BGR has even received an email from an angry unlimited data subscriber who received a notice after using just 1.6GB of data during a billing period.

As it stands today, a user with AT&T’s $30 tiered plan can enjoy about 50% more data than an unlimited data user. Enjoy is the key word, because throttling brings AT&T’s typically speedy 3G and 4G data speeds down to 2G territory.

Vote with your wallet. AT&T is pretty much the worst company you could ever want to deal with. Not that Verizon or Sprint are perfect, but no company treats their customers with the outright contempt that AT&T does.

And here come the AT&T haters..I have unlimited still and I’ve never been throttled (and I usually use ~4GB/mo.) I have great coverage, and have always had AT&T bend over backwards to accommodate any issue I might have possibly encountered.

If people don’t like it, go to Sprint where you can have unlimited data (for now), but have sub-par network quality and horrid customer service, or Verizon/T-Mobile (which both limit/throttle)… Hell, even go for MetroPCS where you can get $50 for unlimited everything. It’s not like AT&T is a monopoly, you have options. Lots of them.

It’s not just data on mobile devices. If you have u-verse then your home internet is capped also. http://www.att.com/esupport/internet/usage.jsp#fbid=e-InX5nbrXY
So if you use AT&T for mobile and have an ‘unlimited’ data plan and use u-verse at home…you’re paying alot for limited data.

Since I haven’t herd of a class action lawsuit from these customers, I can only assume AT&T is within their right under the small print to do this. This kind of behavior is why I will be history when my contract is up in June. They all suck somewhat, but AT&T has always taken it to heights the others have yet to achieve.

This needs a class action. Don’t advertise unlimited and then limit things…

for customers who use their grandfathered business plans for business, and get throttled so its unusable to them, that could be argued as a monetary impact caused by carrier changing agreeded upon contract and should be allowed as a early exit from contract with no etf

I left AT&T when, after 4 years as a customer in good standing, they refused to activate my UNLOCKED dell streak and blocked the IMEI from their networks. Their excuse was that my device was not approved for use with their networks. This was all while AT&T CEO was claiming that they don’t police the network for unlocked device usage. AT&T will lie through their teeth. You know what the worst part was? This was all while AT&T were selling/offering the dell streak themselves – they were just angry that I brought in my own, and didn’t buy it from them. Fuck AT&T.

Kyung Park Why would you need to activate it? I’ve swapped sims around all the time and I’ve never had a problem, were you trying to get the right dataplan or something?

Not all data pipes are created equally.. There’s more bandwidth available in the larger metro areas then there would be in Nowhere, Kansas.

Fortunately, I’m a grandfathered AT&T unlimited user but I’ve never got the throttling message. One of the reasons I’m reluctant to switch to a new carrier, unlimited data is hard to comeby these days.

@Dustin Rothenberg – I work in the telecom industry. I know the difference between wifi and 3G/4G. Netflix and Pandora don’t use as much data as other streaming services. I streamed pandora most of my ride from Chicago to NJ and only used 350 MB. My iPhone uses SIGNIFICANTLY less data than my Droid, but my droid is on grandfathered on unlimited at VZW so I don’t ever monitor my data. I don’t use many applications on my blackberry beside email, attachments and basic web browsing but I’m very rarely beyond 100mb.

I don’t know what you guys are doing using that much data. I’ve seen internal statistics, and literally 90% of smartphone users use less than 2GB, especially on iPhone and Blackberry. The only time I’ve used excessive data was when I was moving and used my iphone for the hotspot with all my devices. I used like 8gb in 10 days. Other than that, no where close.

And back to the point: an unlimited plan basically capped at 2/3 or worse of the same price 3GB plan is ridiculous and verging on breach of contract with its users. It was obvious u work for at&t in RETAIL which is as much Telecom as being a janitor makes someone a custodial engineer. Autoupdate apps. Sending pics and video to facevok, dropbox, video calling….ur making such a b.s. argument. Yes…if u used it the way you said and only did that and did not use your phone for anything else, you could technically avoid throttling. My father uses his iPhone for basically nothing (email, google searches, online banking….no photos, no streaming , no downloadinfnything Ans he still uses over 500MB/month

Max Martinelli What about a phone other than an iPhone? The Android Market does not limit you when downoading apps. Or how about songs/Spotify? Also, why would I settle for ‘low’ or ‘good’ quality Netflix when I am paying for the service and want the best. Even with taking your ‘around’ 310MB per hour rule on ‘good’ quality, 1 movie that is two hours long uses 620MB, so I would only be able to watch 3-4 movies per month from Netflix, and that is only if I do not use my phone for anything else data wise. No downloading apps, music, gps, e-mail or the regular website browsing….
