UBS: Apple to ship 42.5 million iPhones in Q4

Business

Spurred by the iPhone 4S launch, several analysts expect sales of Apple’s iPhone lineup to explode during the fourth quarter of this year. “The timing of the 70 [international] launches could have some impact on sales ahead of the launch, the US/International split, and hence, our estimates look conservative,” UBS analyst Maynard Um said in a recent note to investors. “A similar 27.5 percent U.S. / 72.5 percent international split from this quarter would imply 42.5 million units in CY4Q or an upside of 14.5 million iPhones.” Apple shipped 17.1 million iPhones during the fiscal fourth quarter, and the lower-than-expected sales were blamed on rumors and anticipation ahead of the iPhone 4S launch. Um predicts a huge turnaround for Apple in the fourth calendar quarter, and of course he isn’t alone. The “resoundingly successful” iPhone 4S launch is expected to result in a big holiday season for the Cupertino-based company, Ticonderoga Securities said in a recent note.

Yes!  I was wondering this all week, how many iPhones the analysts were predicting would be shipped in Q4.   Now I know!  Now what I do with this knowledge? Crap, I didn’t think that far…

True Story: I used to have an iPhone 3G, I enjoyed it but the first droid came out so I went to check it out. I ended up buying it and absolutely loved it, I couldn’t figure out why I liked my iPhone before. After having my droid for about a year I switched it up and got a Droid X, I enjoyed that one as well. But as time went on I just kept having more and more problems.. Constant freezing, apps force closing all the time, and sometimes my keyboard wouldn’t work. I exchanged them out and Verizon decided they would send me a Thunderbolt.. Horrible phone, 5 hour battery life at most. I decided to pick up the iPhone 4 instead and since then I haven’t looked back. The system is so seamless and everything works perfect. On top of that I have it jailbroken

I had the original Droid and loved it. Comparing it to my friends iphones, it had so many more features and the slide out keyboard was awesome. Fast forward a year later… it started slowing down and freezing. I would press the home button and my icons would take 10 seconds to pop up. I would press the call button next to a contact and it would take almost 30 seconds to place the call… Tried restoring, never really got much better. Now I upgraded to the iphone 4s and I obviously see a huge difference. A lot of it has to do with it being a new phone, so I’m sure I would see a huge difference with any new Droid or Android phone. What I like about the iPhone, is how seemlessly it works with my mac. All my contacts, calendars, reminders, music are all synced without having to do anything. The polish in iOS is unbelievable to me. That’s why I will stick with the iPhone for now…

Yeah, but the specs are more important. Not functionality, not seamless performance.

Too funny. All of my buddy’s that have Android phones ask the same thing when a new phone is coming out “Sounds nice, but what’s under the hood?”

Before Android phones no one gave a crap about CPU types and clock speeds. Apple doesn’t even release CPU speed info for the iPhone. Who cares anyway, the phone just works, no lag.

i got the iphone 4s , i strained my retina from looking at the screen, crashed my car looking at the map while driving , siri told all my business to my wife , i dropped on the bed and the screen shattered… im going back to android

The OG Droid, that was a good choice. The Droid X was something of a flop depending on whom you talk to. I owned one for about a week before I got tired of Motorola’s custom UI which ate RAM and caused countless bugs. That phone was a bad choice on your part, but you probably got it when it first came out so you couldn’t really look into reviews. Verizon giving you a thunderbolt as a replacement was nice of them, but it is a flagship device for new network technology. Always a phone to observe but not purchase as they will always have terrible battery life. The iPhone was a good choice in your case, at least you jailbroke it!

the seamless experience is the part that Android and Blackberry users can’t understand. It’s the total package that makes iPhone so enjoyable to use. Been loving the experience on my iPhone 4S.

Your mistake was buying a Motorola.

Thunderbolt looks like a horrible phone as well.

  • Hulu

There will be 70 million Android phones sold during this same quarter.

    • Kevenmac

…by 10 different manufacturers. See the difference?

      • Anonymous

More like 35 if I remember correctly, which is pathetic.

The fact that you need 35 companies in order to outsell one is just sad.

35? Copy and paste that list.

      • Dan

@b00dah:disqus  You just proved my point, Apple is just like every other large company. Now you may continue trolling and providing useless comments on everyone elses posts

      • Dan

Apple would be no where without their manufacturing partners (underpaid little boys and girls who are on break from making Nike shoes)

      • Anonymous

And your point is?  Tell me “who” in the industry IS NOT doing just that?  Tired argument, sir.  You’ll get nowhere with that here.

      • Anonymous

Instead of criticizing Apple, how about criticizing the overall sociopolitical environment. Or remembering that different countries have different standards. Do you think China or various third-world countries would be better off without countries like the U.S. gifting them with so much manufacturing jobs?

      • Anonymous

Ya you’re right because all android phones and all other computers are made here in the go old U S of A……sigh. Get real.

      • Dan

@macboy74 No one said anything about Android phones being made in the US. You assume I care about the Android OS because I think Apple is an overrated joke and people like you who think Apple is the answer to everything.

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Why does that make a difference? They all have the same core.

      • Anonymous

It matters to the OEMs; they’re not profit-sharing commies. Samsung is battling against HTC as much as it is against Apple.

      • Anonymous

You see what I mean @Pendergast:disqus .  We are convinced it’s Android vs iOS and here’s Apple laughing all the way to the bank!  The margins will keep eroding for the OEMs as competition continues to grow for Android OEMs.

      • Hulu

If iOS was open source, and 10 manufacturers began producing iOS phones the number would still be the same. Less people would buy the iPhone. See the difference?

    • Anonymous

      Lot more than that.

    • Anonymous

And Microsoft, member of the 1% market share club, will be continue to be flattered that everybody copied their stuff and is doing so well with it.

    • Anonymous

      Actually 250 million.

  • Anonymous

    Bullshit.

  • Anonymous

Nice number but what does it mean?Based on a growth market is this astounding?  I highly suspect Android will sell more collectively.

    • Anonymous

That’s an amazing figure for a single manufacturer. Any business-minded person understands this. To fanboys, it may seem like it’s Android vs. iOS, and to some degree it is, but overall market share is really only valuable to developers (meaning you have to include iPads and iPods). In the real business world, it’s Apple vs. Samsung vs. HTC vs. Nokia vs. Blackberry vs. LG, etc. Despite using a common OS, Android OEMs are not friends, and don’t share profits. Right now, Apple is winning from a business perspective, and is rivaled only by Samsung.

      • Anonymous

Kudos @Pendergast:disqus .  That’s the part that most of my fellow Goofans (aka Apple Haters) don’t get.  They are convinced that it’s iOS vs Android.  HTC, FIRST needs to compete with Motorola or Samsung before even thinking about competing with the iPhone.  But my guys were told that Google sends money to all the OEMs to even things out.  And we believe anything Google says.

    • Anonymous

Collectively?  Of course.  Heck, there’s about 10,000 Android models out there.  :-)

No matter how many Apple sells, it will never change the fact that Steve Jobs was considered a “monster” by Apple employees. (CNN reported).

Apple fanaticism has led me to be BANNED BY ENGADGET for posting that I am HAPPY that Steve Jobs is dead. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO FREE SPEECH ???

The man was jerk and his fanatic followers are sheep.
I’m looking forward to all hidden facts about this jerk coming out over the next few weeks and months.
    Good Riddance.

    • Anonymous

You have the right to free speech, and others have the right to consider you the definition of the lowest levels of humanity. And Engadget has the right to express themselves by banning you.

      Go away.

      • Anonymous

Engadget tried to deny me free speech. I laugh at them and continue to post over there.
Steve Jobs was a hypocritical megalomaniac. I’m glad he’s dead.
With all the info that leaks about about this jerk in the near future, I believe more and more people will agree with me.

      • Anonymous

Seems like they were successful as you can’t post there anymore. Free speech is awesome, allows many to look like complete idiots =)

Might want to take a minute to see why you have so much anger towards someone you never met, worked with/for, or had any real connection to.

Even if he was horrible to work for, no one forced anyone to work/deal with him. Many companies have horrible leadership, it’s nothing new. I’m assuming those that work for Apple and with Jobs had other options. Not like they were flipping burgers…

    • Anonymous

Why are you so angry man?  Your and my lord, Larry Page is still around.  We (you, I and the rest of the Goofan aka Apple Hater Nation) are his sheep and he loves us.  So what if Larry’s also a dick.  People at that level tend to be dicks.

    • Scott Edwards

The right to free speech only covers your ability to speak freely without fear of prosecution from the government.  It is not, as so many believe in ignorance, the right to say whatever you want without consequence.

    • Hilliardwildcats

      He truly was a monster.
