Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus reportedly built to avoid Apple patent lawsuits

Legal

Samsung specifically designed the Galaxy Nexus to avoid patent lawsuits from Apple, Samsung’s mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun told Yonhap News Agency Wednesday. “We will see if it will be 100 percent free” from patent infringement lawsuits, he explained, noting that the current ongoing patent war with Apple is in its fledgling stages. “I think it is just a start and [the battle] will last for a considerable time,” Shin explained. “I don’t think there is much gain. What we are losing is the pride in our brand. We will avoid everything we can and take patents very seriously.” Samsung originally said it had postponed its San Diego press conference, during which it was supposed to launch the Galaxy Nexus alongside Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich, due to Steve Jobs’ recent passing. However, one report suggested the true reason the phone was delayed was due to last-minute tweaks needed to avoid patent lawsuits from Apple. Shin’s comments don’t suggest Samsung was lying about the event cancelation, but they do confirm that patents were a focus for the company as it built the device. Samsung and Apple are currently locked in legal battles around the globe with lawsuits filed in France, Japan, the United States, Australia and the Netherlands, among other countries.

And yet, Google trusts us more to know what to do with our phones so that we can do more out of the box than you can with an iPhone. Widgets, side-loading apps, home launcher replacement, etc…

I don’t give a dhamn about cool.  That kind of immaturity is usually what I see the iPhonies preaching.  I have an Android phone because it runs well and allows me to do the things I want in the way I want.

God I’m tired of all the bashing from people with obvious bias towards their device/OS of choice. It’s far worse than the XBOX 360 vs. PS3 days. Why can’t people just be happy that technology is advancing and that you have a choice on which device is suitable for your lifestyle? It reminds me of the [my team] vs. [opponent's team] mentality you see at sports games and sports forums.

Don’t forget PC vs. console! That’s some world-class haterade right there.

This is the first reasonable comment I’ve seen in a long time! It’s incomprehensible to me the zeal with which people fight for and defend tech companies. It’s like religious fanaticism: my phone (god) is better than yours! What do you care if someone buy an Android over an iPhone and vice versa? If you have some sore of financial interest in a company, then I can understand, but otherwise, what’s the point? You buy a phone because you chose to; me buying the competitor’s phone doesn’t diminish your phone in any way. Be happy with your choice. It’s a gadget, it’s really not that serious!

Precisely why Apple doesn’t sell iPhone. We’re in the year 2011, we’re on iPhone 4S. Try to keep up, huh?

  • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

Of course they’re worried about them… they (samsung and google) want to limit as much patent issues/fees as possible to ensure Android’s future.

However, MS is the one they wont’ get around and that’s why Samsung didn’t even fight it. Apple’s are the one’s that are based around design vs actual functionality and therefore can be mitigated.

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

The MS thing is due to them having patents on ridiculous things, such as viewing a calendar on a mobile device and battery management of a mobile device. These types of patents shouldn’t exist, as the mobile/tech world evolves so should the patent process. I think patents should be suspect to review by a board of tech savvy people.

Can the cavemen sue bic over fire? Or firestone over the wheel?

Are you a patent expert? You do realize that the generic descriptions are just descriptions and don’t comprise the entirety of the patent, right?

Apple and Microsoft collectively invented the modern computer age, and they’ve been around a lot longer than Google, the new kid on the block. It makes sense they have patents that are hard to get around. This isn’t the same as some company you’ve never heard of trolling patents in East Texas.

  • Anonymous

It’s such a sign of the times that they had to design the phone with patent avoidance in mind. That said, I hope it works because I am really tired of this fuckery.

      • Anonymous

I had calendars, contacts, games, web browsing, apps, etc. on my Palm m515 back in 2003.

It doesn’t mean it’s the “same tech” found on today’s smartphones.

Just because functionality is similar doesn’t mean the execution is.

  • Anonymous

It’s funny how lawsuit heavy apple is that companies have to specifically analyze every product so there are zero similarities. Soon Apple will be suing people for making phones, Apple owns phones.

  • http://twitter.com/hawaiiinsomniac hawaiiinsomniac

Google should have build the phones as they planned and have a Google vs. Apple showdown!

Samsung specifically designed the Galaxy Nexus crapily to avoid patent lawsuits from Apple

Should have been doing it all along instead of blatantly copying.

you mean blatantly copying things just like apple does?  I love all the iretards who think that everything on an apple device was created by apple.

Go ahead and compare it to the actual phone.

      • Bullet Tooth Tony

ok… it’s the exact same phone…. not sure what you’re saying.  Are you referring to the curve, which you can clearly see is not the actual curve of the phone, but a bright white light that goes thru the surface of the phone, and exposes the ends and curves up off the top at the left and right side?

      • whodat

yea since 99% of what an Iphone is on the inside is made from Samsung

      • Anonymous

Actually according to the tear down and an article by the wsj, it seems that only the A5 processor is still made by Samsung

      • Anonymous

Yeah, Apple definitely doesn’t use a proprietary SoC or a proprietary OS. Everything is just off-the-shelf parts rebadged with an Apple logo.

      • LosingCredibility

Get off the internet and get a life.  You are pathetic to sit on a blog 24/7 preaching about how Apple is god. Get a life, get laid, do something….loser.

  • bRoKen MonKey

Iphones are pretty and to be frank Very Fragile (being of course part of that very small percentage of clumsy individuals to drop mine). But this thing is just Tech Sexy. The only thing Apple can give Samsung/Google now is more ihate and iwishwemadeitfirst.

  • Anonymous

LOL,, well, I’m pretty sure you are suppose to build your products to NOT to use other companies IP. Unless you are paying for said IP.

  • Lightningdroid

Apple is way behind innovation now. Their focus right now is litigating and blocking other manufacturer to sell their product. Why not just license the patents to others by having them pay you royalties and continue innovating…

    • Anonymous

Yeah, because Apple doesn’t have a legal department; they’ve had to send their engineers to law school and are therefore shorthanded when it comes to innovation.

  • Shankapotomus

its impossible to build a device now that apple wont attempt to sue you for.  After all, Apple did create communication.  This device clearly breaks many apple patents like “rectangular screen” and “handheld”

  • http://twitter.com/DipdCrown Shawn Williams

That’s just the way Apple wants to survive. They cant (or choose not to) keep up with the innovation and development behind Android. Their philosophy is: “Since iWant to be the only choice, iWill take your features (pulldown notifications, voice command, etc) say iNvented them, and sew your brains out for selling a device to people with ears and fingers.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, because Apple hasn’t had Voice Commands for years.

      Siri =/= voice commands

  • http://twitter.com/DipdCrown Shawn Williams

Once there is a legitimate alternative to itunes, Apple knows it will have a major problem

    • Anonymous

      Isn’t amazon a legitimate competitor?

  • Anonymous

I’m a Samsung Android user, and very much like their products, but uhh…. isn’t this what they should have been doing the whole time? I mean, I know it’s hard to know every single patent people have, especially in the US with so many patent trolls that patent something random and wait for people to do the same just to sue them, but that’s what your legal teams are for. It shouldn’t be a big news article that you’re trying to make a product the right way. I’m quite certain if a team was created with representatives from Google and all of their manufacturers, they could find alternatives to any possible patented technology.

The real solution is still patent reform because the way we’re headed now every manufacturer is going to push every other out of the market with millions of patents so that each company can’t so much as patent the ability to press a button in a certain way.

So does the broken arm. He couldn’t even jerk himself off to a MacBook Pro.

  • Anonymous

Haha…is that why they didn’t use the 8 megapixel from the s2…

    • http://www.facebook.com/aedebiri Airen Edebiri

No, having an 8 megapixel camera has nothing to do with anything. Phones have had 8 MP cameras for the longest time, even before Apple started trolling Samsung.

More importantly, the number of pixels is irrelevant to the quality of the image. More megapixels = larger picture size, not better quality. A good 3MP or 5MP camera can easily take much better pictures than a crappy 8MP camera.

So instead they decided to rip off HP and WebOS instead, as well as Microsoft and WP7? I mean seriously. They took what Android was, and changed it into sorta Android with a hell of a lot of influence from WebOS and WP7.

    • Booboolala2000

Get over it man. Tiles weren’t inspired by widgets? Really? And as far as web os goes, you are aware that the guy that was largely responsible for web os design has been with Google and Android for over a year now.

  • Anonymous

Lets get rid of these mobile patents and let companies purely compete between themselves to come up with new technology and get it to market faster than the other guy.

    • Anonymous

Well that’s clever!  So the little guy that actually invents something gets screwed by the big company.  Pretty clever man!

      • Anonymous

Companies are too big now for the little guy to get ahead, I love your optimism though :)

  • Booboolala2000

Well it doesn’t look like an iphone at all.

  • Anonymous

hahahahahahhahahahahhahaha-crApple proof; oh wait, shit, it’s a phone.  I suppose crApple patented that too eh?  Well, game on.

  • KCRic

This makes no sense. How was it built to avoid patent issues? It’s part of the Nexus family and as such would only have an AOSP version of Android, it wasn’t going to be any other way – ever. What else was Apple suing over besides shapes and colors? That’s right, nothing.
