New Jersey Transit to support Google Wallet mobile payments

New Jersey Transit will soon introduce limited support for Google’s NFC-based mobile payment system, Bloomberg Businessweek reported on Wednesday. Google Wallet is currently only available on one handset, Sprint’s Nexus S 4G, and supports a handful of retailers including Foot Locker, Macy’s, Jamba Juice, Walgreens and Subway. Commuters will be able to use the handset to quickly purchase tickets in a tap-and-go fashion at New York Penn Station, Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station and several bus lines including the 120, 87, 81, 80, 43, 6 and 126. “Transit is the fastest way to accelerate adoption and reach usage density in major urban centers by habituating the behavior of tapping and paying with phones,” Google vice president of commerce Stephanie Tilenius said.

Now if San Francisco area transit like Clipper Card, BART, Caltrain, VTA, AC Transit, MUNI, SamTrans, and Golden Gate Transit would get on this, it would be great. It could be done in a way, where you download an app, built by Google and/or Clipper and it could have various options to purchase “One Way”, “RoundTrip”, “Day Pass”, “Single Ride”, “Youth”, “Senior” and “Monthly Pass” options through Google Wallet and NFC. All the buses and trains here all have the NFC readers on board, so there is no reason it couldnt be done.

yeah right you know how old this tech is? Google is great at rehashing old ideas. What a waste of talent

I don’t understand. Why so far Goggle’s wallet NFC function works only on Sprint’s Nexus S 4G? What happen to GSM versions Nexus S?

I wish they would do this for other major transit systems in the US Northeast like Boston, NYC, and Baltimore/DC?
