Samsung sells over 30 million Galaxy S/Galaxy S II smartphones

Business

Samsung announced on Monday that it has sold more than 30 million Galaxy S/Galaxy S II smartphones globally. Samsung said in late September that it had already sold a total of 10 million units of the Galaxy S II, which recently made its debut in the United States on T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T. The South Korea-based phone maker also dubbed the Galaxy S II its fastest selling smartphone ever in July, after it sold 3 million units in 55 days. “Since its launch only five months ago, Galaxy S II has seen tremendous sales success and garnered enthusiastic reviews from consumers and mobile industry watchers across the globe,” president and head of Samsung’s mobile business JK Shin said. “This is in addition to the continued sales momentum behind Galaxy S, which we launched at Mobile World Congress 2010 as continues to be a run-away success with consumers.” Read on for the full press release from Samsung.

Samsung celebrates 30 million global sales of GALAXY S and GALAXY SII

Global popularity with customers drives momentum for Samsung’s flagship smartphones

SEOUL, Korea – October 17th, 2011 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, a leading mobile handset provider, today announced that its Samsung GALAXY S and GALAXY SII smartphones have achieved a combined total of 30 million global sales.

GALAXY SII has set a new record for Samsung, generating more than 10 million sales – quicker than any device in Samsung’s history. The device also recently received five out of the total ten Mobile Choice Consumer Awards 2011 in the UK as well as 2011 Gadget Award for being chosen as the best smartphone of the year by T3, confirming it as a run-away favorite smartphone with consumers this year. It continues to gain traction as Samsung’s flagship smartphone – a stylishly designed, slim and ultra-portable device combining an unrivalled viewing experience with powerful dual-core processor performance.

Launched in 2010, Samsung GALAXY S reached almost 20 million unit sales, making it the highest-selling mobile device in Samsung’s portfolio to date, and another record-breaker for the company and the mobile market.

Since launching to high critical acclaim two years ago, the GALAXY S range has continued to gain popularity among consumers and propelled the GALAXY brand to one of the most recognized mobile brands in the world, with Samsung now the largest Android smartphone vendor and the second largest phone vendor overall worldwide (IDC).

“Since its launch only five months ago, GALAXY SII has seen tremendous sales success and garnered enthusiastic reviews from consumers and mobile industry watchers across the globe. This is in addition to the continued sales momentum behind GALAXY S, which we launched at Mobile World Congress 2010 as continues to be a run-away success with consumers,” said JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business.

“The phenomenal success of these smartphones once again demonstrates how the GALAXY S smartphones is setting the standard for smart mobile technology around the world.”

    Not bad at all.

I just find it funny how these apple fanboy fuckers better known bgr, put this article up so late in the day.  of course if this were the Icrap it would be released all pretty with bells on for all to read during the middle of the day and not at night when everyone who would be interested in this is else were fapping ……..

      just saying is all…..

o and yes for the win…. im writting this on my sweet SGS2!!!!

      • http://twitter.com/Glansburgs Steven Glansburg

The SGS2 lags just like every other android phone I’ve tried.  Maybe the lag will stop with quadcore processors.  Seriously, it’s just old now.

      • AppleSucksBigBalls

Another example of an apple fanboy talking shit as usual. Go to any websites that benchmarks phones and you will see the Galaxy S II scoring better than the igarbage 4s that was just released…..really don’t take my word for it, and stop lying to everyone else. Samsung manufactures most of the parts in Apple products, why would you think and say that they can’t develop something better for their own product. Here’s some facts for your uneducated ass:

Samsung manufactures Apple’s A4 and A5 processors found in the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPod Touch, among other components found inside of Apple’s i-devices. iPhone 4S
        - A5 Application Processor: Samsung
        - IPS/Retina Display: LG
        - Dram/Sram Memory: Samsung
        - Battery: Samsung SDI
        - MLCC(Multi Layer Ceramcic Condenser): Samsung
        - Chip Varistor: Amotech (Korea)
        - FC(Flexible Circuitry): Interflex (Korea)
Read above, then STFU, and stop lying to others.

My brother has a SGS2. I checked it out this weekend. Nice phone. It only froze up one time on me when switching between applications. There is still a little lag but not as much as my evo 4g did before I returned the 5 hour battery laggy plastic garbage. But hey I tried. The android os needs a lot of work. Amazing that the function of the os has still not improved at all. But if you people and my brother like to deal with that so be it.

@ce11c7a6f32807fcd989ee869ae91962:disqus  — “Another example of an apple fanboy talking shit as usual. Go to any websites that benchmarks phones and you will see the Galaxy S II scoring better than the igarbage 4s that was just released…”

What does that have to do with lag?

You can have the greatest specs in the world.  But if there’s lag… that’s just sad.

      • Drew

@macboy74:disqus You’re not credible… Was that suppose to be your testimonial on the Android world?? Is that all you did was switch between applications?? Glad you put it thru the paces. And what’s with the “plastic” references?? Haven’t you tools figured out yet that having an “all glass and metal” device is prone to be ‘shattered glass and metal’. Why use a phone that you have to cover up with a ridiculous case but brag about how it’s made of glass and not plastic?? That must be that NEW Apple logic…

      • Robes1

The problem with the Galaxy phones was never Samsung parts! Who ever said that?! Its Android!!! Android is the worst OS since Windows Mobile 6.5!  It’s ugly like the way that you think!

      • Anonymous

Every phone will lag at some point in time. That’s the reality of phones/tabs/ect. My SGS2 is perfect. No complaints.

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Any in store demo you try of a phone isn’t the correct experience. People go into retail stores with real demo phones and they download a ton of apps, many of which run background processes and slow the phones down. If I am going to play with a demo unit I always do a factory reset from privacy settings to get rid of all of those useless apps and get a feel for the phone really responds. Android isn’t for everyone, you should get an iPhone.

      • http://www.jphotog.com Hrunga Zmuda

AppleSucksBigBalls – Yeah, Samsung has great bullet points when you look at their PowerPoint presentation. But in the real world, many Androids with great specs perform less than expected, are battery eaters (thanks to Flash, 4G and other factors). This isn’t the first time Apple devices actually outperform supposed “better” competition because Apple has complete control of the whole widget. If Samsung wrote their own OS they might have a chance to outperform the iPhone.

Bottom line is both phones are great. And notice, it took less than FOUR DAYS to beat the five month performance by the SGS2 – and by a million more!

      • Drew

@Hrunga_Zmuda:disqus  Are you really going to use that argument and feel really good about what has transpired, given the fact that this device was not released in North America until the end of July?? A population of approx. a half a BILLION… Really??

      • Anonymous

@scribbles92:disqus  and everyone else… you do see that this is about 20 months of sales of Galaxy S and S2 since March of last year (2010). 30 million. That is 4.5 months of the iPhone 4 let alone the 4S. If BGR had done any context setting at all, we would see this for the lame stat it is… If Samsung really put out 19.3M smartphones last quarter as they claim, either that is 65% of all their smartphone sales of the past 20 months, or they are counting crapola like the Intensity 2, etc.
Being on sale in the US (which has 320M, not 500M inhabitants… look it up), is not a key factor for the 4S’s sales. Samsung have had plenty of months to distribute their phone all around the world including larger markets, but have only shipped 10M… boo hoo.

        #Sofarbehind…

      • Drew

@capnbob67:disqus I thought I made myself clear when I said NORTH AMERICA, not just the U.S. The Canucks to our north got their handsets at the end of July. So, it IS a half a billion as I stated. I focused on SGS II and not the Galaxy S. I’m not understanding your last paragraph. How is not having a product sold to over 500,000 people not a factor?? Of course it’s a factor.
What would Apple’s number’s be if they waited until March to launch this phone in North America?? Clearly they would not have sold 4 Million. Let’s not split hairs. Samsung would’ve sold even more handsets if this were released 5 months ago when it was launched everywhere else.

      • Robes1

Loser on a losers phone! LOL!

      • AM

Why can you losers accept the truth about Android.  So the Flagship Galaxy S only sold 4 Mil in 55 days.  So according to your logic the iphone 4s that sucks so much and is inferior to Android sold 4 Mil in 3 days so what does that tell you about what consumers really want?  Yes they wnat Android as a second choice of course.
Please don’t get me wrong, Android is pretty good, but I stop trying to convince everybody that is so much better or wrose than Apple’s OS.

      • http://www.jphotog.com Hrunga Zmuda

Geeze, hate much? But then I guess that’s a dumb question when I saw your name. It’s spelled Juju dude. It’s not an anti-Semitic word when you spell it right.

    • Robes1

awesome! Now let’s add up the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S numbers and and see how that looks! Why are they even giving you the numbers from two different models?! When was the first Galaxy S sold? 2009?! WHO CARES?!! LOL!!

  • Anonymous

3 million units in 55 days? I guess thats successful for a non iPhone, which just sold 4 million in 3 days.

    • Eliseo Roman

Very true but lets remember that iPhone only sold 6 million in 4 months when the second generation iPhone was released. so in retrospect, seeing as this is the second generation Galaxy phone i think its doing pretty good even by iPhone standards.

      • Anonymous

        True, True

      • Lremy22

But lets be serious the 2G iPhone was on less carriers than the Galaxy S II so your argument does not hold up. You Roids are just so full of hate for your father otherwise known as the iPhone.  Would there even be a Galaxy S I or II if the iPhone did not give birth to them.  LoL but remember if you don’t have an iPhone well.. You don’t have an iPhone

      • Chris Yarzab

The iPhone didn’t have a decent phone to compete with but that has changed. The Galaxy S II is a much better phone and has to compete against a slew of different brands of smartphones so it does hold water and the glass doesn’t break. Ha!

      • Booboolala2000

Thank God I don’t have the App Launcher (I mean iPhone 4s)!

      • Robes1

The Galaxy S 2 doesn’t come close to beating the iPhone! It runs Android! So it can only be better than other Android phones! It also loses to all WP7 and Web OS phones by default! Because its an Android phone! I’d rather have an HP Veer! LOL

      • Neoprimal

In addition to that, the iPhone only competes with the iPhone in terms of iOS. Your choice is either iPhone4 or iPhone4S. When the iPhone5 comes, your choices will likely be iPhone4S and iPhone5 – every one of them made by Apple. I don’t know what the total number of iPhone users is, let’s just say it’s 20 million. If 20 million people own and have invested hundreds of dollars (for apps, etc.) into their iPhone then we can expect that ~20 million will upgrade to another iPhone. Give and take. Some will leave for Android or elsewhere and vice versa. Still, that’s ~20 million that will buy the iPhone between the iPhone4S and iPhone5 and the next iPhone, let’s say iPhone5S (heh heh heh).

Samsung on the other hand, has HTC as well as other manufacturers also selling Android phones. So if let’s just say 20 million people own Android devices, they have 0 reason to be loyal to Samsung other than liking the style and features of the device. They have so many other choices during certain periods of time…Samsung, HTC, Motrolola, LG etc. all running Android with different hardware at different prices. So whereas 20 million people who like/prefer iOS have 2 phones to choose from. 20 million people who like/prefer Android have like 30 phones to choose from. Apple gets the whole pie, Samsung gets a piece, but they’ve gotten a rather big piece. Granted, we all know Android has about double the market share by now but the point is still clear.4 million in a few days is a great achievement, but Samsung is doing very well to move that amount in ~2 months. This notwithstanding the fact that U.S carriers also recently released the variants on the market currently.

      • http://www.jphotog.com Hrunga Zmuda

Actually, Apple has sold about 110 million iPhones to date, not counting iPhone 4Ss. (200 million iOS devices).

    • Anonymous

The only problem here is that they sell 100 other phones.
Let’s see how many phones Samsung as a company sells.
And not only that on the same operating system, if you happen to choose Android you have 100 other choices so if you don’t exactly want a 4.3″ and maybe a 4.0″ there is a phone just for you, etc etc.
If you want iOS you have to chose iPhone 4/4S doesn’t matter if you want a 4.0″.

I’m waiting for my 4S, but it seems as if iPhanboys and Droidboys usually cloud their judgement by their stupid as love for a company. Taking this far too personal.

  • Josefrakich

iPhone sells that many in a week

    • Anonymous

Apple fans will buy anything with an Apple logo… even a glass phone that breaks if you look at it funny and drops calls like crazy (iPhone 4).

      • Anonymous

Stfu dam broken record you people are.

      • Anonymous

It’s true. Everyone was warned about the iphone 4′s issues last year but people still bought it.

      • Anonymous

@draiko:disqus and guess what, they all like it much more than Android users like their phones (according to customer satisfaction surveys)… wow – must be 80M stupid people… or does Occam’s razor suggest that you are the idiot?

And the calls don’t drop worse than any other phone I’ve had on AT&T. The dropping thing is the price of having a phone that feels nice in hand unlike the plasticy POSs that pass for most Androids. Get a case.

      • Anonymous

I’ve yet to drop a call on ATT, even in rural areas, and I’ve yet to break my phone by dropping it after 3 years. Why can’t people YOU people be just a bit wittier in your remarks? Like macboy said “broken record”.

Samsung has sold a lot of those plastic gems… It seems odd though because I’ve yet to notice someone with one. Or maybe that’s because it just blends in with every other android device. If the phone was really that amazing and popular it would be running iOS and have a giant apple on the back of it. This is just Samsung and android inflating numbers like they’ve done for android tablet sales.

But all in all it’s a great phone! I LOVE mine :-)
        Mind F’d!

      • Anonymous

I’ve had my iPhone 4 for over a year.  Looks like brand new.  No case on it, just a few stickers.  Dropped a few times, no problems.  Have never had a dropped call and I’m on AT&T.    This is the only Apple product I’ve ever owned, and quite frankly I’m impressed.    The last thing I want is a junky OS that’s called Android being used on a Plastic phone.   I’ll rather any other phone OS.

      • Anonymous

He’s refering to the iPhone 4 & 4S. Glass and front backs.

Go to YouTube and search “iPhone 4S vs. Samsung Galaxy S II Drop Test” and see for yourself.

      • Anonymous

No case on my IPhone 4, have had it over a year, dropped a few times, still looks like new!  It’s also my first ever Apple product.  All you have is Name Calling.    I could care less that it was made by Apple.  I picked the iphone for a number of better reasons.  I’ll list a few.  #1 Better 3rd party support for Software and Hardware!!!  Android doesn’t even come close.  Ya, you finally got some of the big ones like Netflix,
big wow.   There’s Apps I need to use that are ONLY on iOS with Android versions coming out who knows when.  I’m not waiting around.  Far better games on iOS then Android, Really far better everything. Why settle for Android?

      • Anonymous

Countless spider-cracked iPhone 4s agree with me. It’s ok to say Apple didn’t design something very well… oh wait, they have those Apple loyalty goons that pose as police officers and search houses. No wonder you Apple customers are so loyal.

        Name calling? Where?

Also, I’ll stack up the Android games in Tegra Zone against your iOS games any day of the week.

Android is pulling ahead as the better platform for everything.

Cue the apple trolls selling 4million this weekend

    • AM

can’t stand the truth can you.  It took samsum 55 days to sell 3 Million units and it took apple 3 days to sell 4 million of an inferior phone and all you pricks have to say is that fan boys would buy anythng with an apple logo on it, wow that statements souds like something my 2 year old would say.

      • Anonymous

Sorry I made you cry with my comment. I didn’t know you were that close to apple.

I know, the only thing that makes you cry is the frosty shock of the Ice Cream Sandwich enema you happily take every morning. It wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for all the chunks of gingerbread…

Samsung’s numbers never  match up. They have NO revenue in mobile. Most of their money comes from components, with Apple being their biggest buyer. If they really sold that many phones, their numbers would be larger. This is typical of companies, whenever Apple reports numbers, in the last few years. 30 million in 2+ years is great, but 4 million in less than 2 days is “meh”!

  • Anonymous

LOL @ Sadsung having to combine both phones to make it look impressive.

Hey crapsung, remember those 4 millions iPhone 4S Apple just sold in less than 3 days? Well, those did not include the iPhone 4S OR the 3GS ever since the price drops
    :)

    • Guest

Yeah it’s a little obvious why they’re releasing these figures now.

    • AppleSucksBigBalls

Yeah you’re right, that’s because Samsung makes their money by selling crap components to Apple, so you fools can then buy it from Apple. Their good components, you will find on their own products.

Samsung manufactures Apple’s A4 and A5 processors found in the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPod Touch, among other components found inside of Apple’s i-devices. iPhone 4S
      - A5 Application Processor: Samsung
      - IPS/Retina Display: LG
      - Dram/Sram Memory: Samsung
      - Battery: Samsung SDI
      - MLCC(Multi Layer Ceramcic Condenser): Samsung
      - Chip Varistor: Amotech (Korea)
      - FC(Flexible Circuitry): Interflex (Korea)

Even true facts like this would not phase you Apple fanboys, because if Apple markets pure shit, you guys would buy it and say it smells better than your own. To make you guys feel a bit better, they do market and advertise well though, it’s the only way to sell the shit they create……..in this case you can apply the word shit to iphones, ipods, ipads and whatever other Apple product you fancy that’s about a year behind the rest of it’s kind.

      • Anonymous

You sure do know a lot about apple, seems odd from someone who so adamantly disdains the company and their products.

Now then, educate the masses about your true love! Tell us what android OS and Samsung phones looked like before 2007 when apple came and messed everything up with their dumb touchscreens and fancy one button doodads.

      • Anonymous

Do you actually think a Samsung phone or Tablet has all Samsung parts in it?   Do you actually believe Samsung sells Apple Crap components?  That’s so beyond laughable.     What a fandroid you are.

  • Anonymous

Samsung is notorious for announcing sales numbers that never landed in customers’ hands. Classic case was the first Galaxy tab which they said afterwards the sell-through numbers were really small. These numbers were shipments to channels not the actual sell-through. And from the actual sell-through take away about at least 1/3 for returns, which by the way Android handsets are known for with higher return rate.

Samsung will do anything to skew perception to the point of lying. That’s what they are.

So if they are saying 30M, it’s actually around 15 to 17 million actual sell-through and net of returns.

    • Anonymous

I will say, the captivate on at&t has some of THE MOST inconsistent performance. One month they’re solid, next they’re freezing and getting returned left and right. Why? I don’t get it. The worst problem we have with iPhones is people not knowing how to turn the vibrate toggle off. I shit you not, that’s really it. The sgsII seems ok so far but we’ll see of that lasts, not like a bunch of people are coming in for them. We have to actually show it to people before they know it exists.

My guess is because of the Galaxy Nexus

      • http://twitter.com/Glansburgs Steven Glansburg

At&t is also getting that, so, yeah.

      • Anonymous

Eventually. But then there will be something else bigger and better down the pipe. It wouldn’t make sense for Verizon to pick up the SGS2 when they would be getting the Galaxy Nexus so soon after. They already have to deal with the RAZR/Bionic issue. By the time AT&T gets the Nexus, the SGS2 will have been on the shelves for a while so they don’t have to worry about one cutting into the other’s sales.

  • http://twitter.com/adrian_e Adrian Edwards

I don’t get the ‘Android lag’ thing… my Galaxy S II doesn’t lag at all and is faster in every regard when I compared it to an iPhone 4. There are plenty of arguments for Apple fanboys to make but lag isn’t one of them, especially on a GS II post.

    • Anonymous

Ya right, when I hear that, I really have to laugh.  This is one of the things I keep hearing that ICS will FIX!!  But for you the Universe has reversed.  Strange….

I own both an iphone 4s and a Samsung Galaxy S II, and there are definite pros and cons to each phone. (one phone is my personal one, and the other is provided by my job)

The iphone is very sleek, efficient, and user friendly.  But by user friendly, I also mean basic.  Everything works exactly show it should, the touch screen just feels “right”, and all the animations are very responsive and smooth.  “Polished” is the best word to describe the iOS.  IMO the iphone is the better looking phone, but that look comes at a serious cost.  You can’t use the thing without a case, completely negating its beauty.  I dropped my old iphone 4 once without a case and the screen completely shattered.  I dropped my old iphone 3gs and droid incredible many times, scratching and chipping the plastic but never breaking the glass.  Apple releasing the first ever Apple branded case with the iphone 4 just proves that something is wrong with the design.

The Samsung Galaxy S II is the opposite of the iphone 4s in many ways.  The android OS is very rich in features that are extremely useful to someone in my line of work (network admin and computer tech), but is likely overly complicated for anyone lacking in technical expertise.  I love being able to download files and transfer them to a PC without internet access for example (something the iOS can’t do without paid apps), but 99% of droid users will never have a use for that feature.  It’s also very nice to be able to control just about every process on the droid OS, but again not something most people care about.  As far as the phone itself is concerned, it’s the complete opposite of the iphone.  It “feels” cheaper since it’s lighter and made of plastic, but that’s not necessarily a negative if it gets dropped or if you’re concerned about pocket weight.  The screen is not quite as impressive as the iphone’s, but unless you look really REALLY close, you’ll never notice the difference.  Although it’s not quite as responsive and doesn’t “feel” as accurate as the iphone, that’s partially due to the droid doing more at the same time.  The iOS is very basic, while the droid OS is very complex, so of course it’s going to run a tiny bit slower and “lag” like many people claim.  The Galaxy S II is so powerful, however, that the lag is noticeable but does not impair the functionality or the enjoyment of using the phone.  It’s likely that people who are having serious problems with any lag are running too many processes at once and not cancelling anything.  Finally, the battery is nowhere near as good as the one in the iphone.  However, you can take the battery out and replace it with a new one.  If you aren’t able to charge your phone for whatever reason and need to use it heavily for extended periods of time, you can’t beat the ability to carry extra charged batteries with you.  Heck, even for emergency survival situations you’re screwed with a dead iphone, but could carry 5 batteries for your Samsung on a camping trip.

Altogether both phones are exceptional pieces of technology and good buys for anyone that wants a quality smart phone.  However, I would have to say the Samsung is the superior phone since it won’t shatter if dropped, you can replace the battery or carry extras, and you have more control over some key features in the OS.
