Google to launch music store this quarter

Google Music store launching soon

Google will announce and launch its own music store this quarter, Business Insider said recently. The company revealed its Music beta service in May, which allows users to store up to 20,000 songs in the cloud, but now users will be able to purchase and download tracks, too. Google is reportedly already in negotiations with the major music labels and The New York Times recently reported that the service will launch in the “next several weeks.” Record labels, however, are worried that Google’s cloud storage option could kindle, not stifle, music piracy. “We want to make sure the locker doesn’t become a bastion of piracy,” one executive told The New York Times. If Google introduces a music store it will compete directly with third-party music apps, such as the Amazon MP3 store, on Android smartphones and tablets. Perhaps we’ll hear more on the topic during the joint Samsung/Google Ice Cream Sandwich press conference on October 18th.

Now Google will show Apple how it’s done.  I foresee iTunes going under soon thereafter…  Just like with iOS and iOS devices.

Oh, and in typical Google fashion EVERYTHING will be free. Only our personal information will be required.

      Apple steals ideas huh.

Well, maybe Google copies everything Apple does.  But they do it a lot better!

Welcome to BGR. No commenter is ever serious about anything here, and the writers deliberately start flame wars

FINALLY!  Now if only they can follow up with some sort of program that will manage my music, apps, photos, and videos on my computer.  The reason I use my gen 1 iPod touch over my GT-i9000 for music is because iTunes is on my computer with my big monitor, full keyboard, and mouse.  Managing music on my Android phone is horrific.  Would also love to be able to back up my apps on my computer.  (my wish list any way)

The only way I would consider using this is if you could download the songs. This is the first report saying you can. Otherwise, this just seems like a waste.

Why download and waste HD space? Mobile internet is now fast enough to stream music no problem, and no one burns CDs anymore. So who cares?

Ever try streaming music from the cloud in the NYC subway system? Doesn’t work so well…

      • Anonymous

I’ve never been to NYC (don’t care for that dense of a population) but I assume it’s bad. They don’t have city WiFi? Even Seattle does…

      • Anonymous

@kyle4miller Just the subway system. Since they’re underground it blocks out all signals. And while I’m at it, not everyone can just download music willy-nilly as much as they want. Certain parts of the world, like Australia, the Middle East, and the rest of Asia all have data limits. In other words, you’ve got 10 GB and if you fill it up no more internet until next month. You’re downloading a song, download it once.

    Who buys music?

    • Anonymous

      Thief.

      • Anonymous

LOL. What are you, 13? Anybody who’s old enough knows that before iTunes came along EVERYOBE was a “thief”.

Apple cuts a premium off of each song they sell. They steal that money from the actual artists and producers. They crushed tens of thousands of local music businesses happily, putting thousands out of work and killing mom and pop shops all over the country.

Yet the guy who downloads party rock anthem (which shouldn’t be worth money anyway frankly) is a thief? That must be some tastey fkn kool aid

I  rarely BUY music myself.  I think it’s pointless, yet I’m not a thief!   See there’s these services like XM Radio, Pandora, Spotify, Slacker, and so on and so on which allows you to stream all the music you want.   Then you hear a lot of different music.  Not the same old garbage over and over again that you paid for or just copied.

God I feel stupid. I just bought a 3G device that locks me in for two years. 3G speeds well into 2013.

    • Anonymous

It’s not bad at all; 4G phones have crappy battery now, so there’s really no need to get them. As long as you’re not constantly downloading stuff on your phone, there’s nothing wrong with 3G. Remember, 2 years ago 3G was considered BLAZING FAST, and that speed hasn’t diminished at all. Our perceptions have.

      • Anonymous

When I can stream my music on my Iphone 4 and still can download google maps used for trapster at the SAME TIME driving down the highway, 3G speeds are fast enough for me!

Let the Apple, sues Google, for copying iTunes lawsuit begin!

  • Bringit

Google – late to the party, again.  They need a new model other than watching what others do and trying to copy.

    • CJ

Theyre simply inproving upon apple’s idea. Theres no problem with that.

  • Anonymous

At this point, you think people are going to magically be encouraged to download music? If they want it, they’ll get it. It’s 2011. The cat is out of the fucking bag on this one.

This is going to be sweet. I can’t wait
