AT&T announces record iPhone activations

mobile

AT&T on Friday confirmed that it has activated a record number of iPhones. “As of 4:30 pm ET today, AT&T had already activated a record number of iPhones on our network – and is on-track to double our previous record for activations on a single day,” the company said in a statement delivered to BGR via email. “These record volumes may produce slower activations for some customers, though our systems continue to run at record levels.” Customers have been complaining of difficulties with activations on various forums around the Web. Considering the carrier has already doubled its single-day activation record, it’s pretty impressive that the system is up at all. It should be noted that some customers are reporting better luck with activating their new iPhones on the device rather than through iTunes.

They reported the same thing after the iPhone, 3G, 3GS and 4 launches also…. Nothing to see here, move along now.

Exactly. What’s that tell you? Best selling smartphone maybe?

    • Sean76

thats your circle of friends sir… all of mine were waiting for the day the iphone came to their carrier, so many of my friends dropped their phones for the iphone once it became available…
        use whatever works for you…

      • numetheus

I know a ton of people into the tech game as well. Almost all of them are waiting to get their iPhone 4s. What does that tell you? Absolutely nothing except your little circle of friends happens to like Android. Calm down and go about your life.

      • Mplsboywonder

Sean- You and your friends do NOT represent the world……..Get a clue.

Probably also a record number of people who can’t activate their phones due to AT&T’s shitty system… which happens every year, as well.

    • Bjvb

      What?

    • Anonymous

That’s odd. I didn’t experience any issues with my iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4 activations.

    • Anonymous

Worked for me 1st try on Att yesterday.

    • Anonymous

Yes that’s what happens when over 300,000 people are using their servers to activate their phones all at once. Moron.

    Fools and their money…

Yeah, I was just thinking of those poor fools who bought Xooms myself…

    • too bad

it took a coworker 3 1/2 hours to activate a pre ordered iPhone 4s with AT&T.

  • zacamandapio

    Great device.  Bad network.
I’m happy that the phone is selling very good.  Not my cup of tea though.

  • Guest030202

Great review by another site… “The iPhone 4S does everything better than the iPhone 4, but it simply doesn’t do anything substantially different.”… I can’t wait to see the review on here……………

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZEFDJYIUHM23YI2WHCWQC7VOSM Nick

It’s going to take a few days for the continuing BGR circlejerk over the 4s to end so that they can use their hands to do something different… like type a glowing review which will then cause another circlejerk

  • http://twitter.com/Metagnostic T

Yep, Apple’s sure in trouble for not releasing an iPhone 5!

    • Tim242

Actually, they are. Most of these are the same people buying iphones over and over. I work at att : ( More and more people are switching to Android. I deal with the people that are switching every day. Apple is not gaining ground…but thanks to mindless lemmings buying the same phone over and over…they will make money off of them.

      • B_britt88

i also work at at&t…i assure you, the iphone keeps reaching more and more users…i know android is far more advanced…but the iphone keeps gaining

      • Tim242

Last cout iphone was up 1% to 28%…Android up 5% to 46%.

      • B_britt88

and yet…that was before the iphone being available on 3/4 major us carriers. I promise you, new smartphone users hardly give android the time of day…i love android, but the iphone reaches a much larger base

      • too bad

u see what u want dude, lol. i see people all the time dropping their Android when the iPhone becomes available… my brother just broke contract on Sprint to get the iPhone. u guys claim specs and size when you know you wish u had an iPhone…

The problem with Android phones is that Samsung drops the ball 80% of the time and makes a handset who’s OS goes to shit after 6mo. HTC still has issues with the Car Door stuff and Motorola is pretty much DOA.

      • numetheus

I’m one of them. I’ll post video of my Inspire 4G taking a round at the range as soon as I get it.

  • Anonymous

    More iHype.

    • His Shadow

Yes, everyone knows record activations, which means record sales of the new phone, are really just hype. Good effort.

  • tcs

And you verified their claims, right?  Because AT&T isn’t exactly known for being honest about why their network is sucking.  It used to be “iphones just chew up so much more data, just you wait till they hit Verizon”.  Then Verizon got the iphone, and magically there were no dropped call issues.  Or slow data issues, or any of the other issues AT&T tried to blame on the iphone.  At some point, I wish one of you “journalists” would just call them out on their bullshit.

    • Swynns1

The data transfer of both company’s aren’t the same on AT&T you could still be on the web and talk and handle all data centric functions that Verizon is still unable to manage unfortunately for us.

      • Lcavada

This is the key feature why i remain in AT&T.  In other carriers, while you are checking emails (every 15 minutes, or 30 minutes….) you cannot get a voice call.  The phone is tied up with the internet, so voice calls go to voice mail.

      • Tim242

Not on the thunderbolt. Simultaneous voice/data on wifi, 4G…and 3G!

      • Anonymous

@tim242:disqus Yeah but the Thunderbolt has a battery life of only 4 hours due to the 4G LTE sucking the life out of the battery.  Apple would have gone 4G LTE if the chipset/radio wasn’t so power hungry.  Actually, the Thunderbolt is better than the Bionic which only gets 3 hours of battery talk time.  Meanwhile the iPhones are getting almost double those battery times.  Geeks will disable the 4G when not really needed just like those with marginal 3G force 2G because the radio scanning repeatedly kills their batteries.

    • Lcavada

You also need to consider the number of iphones.  At&T has many more than Verizon !

  • Emx

It’s all lies so there shareholders remain at bay. The are so full of it. Don’t you think it’s funny how they were the only one to come out and say how there preorders we’re over 200,000 and now record activations. Load of crap!!!

    • Bb010t

yet all carriers came out and said they were out of launch day preorders…stfu

  • Anonymous

Anyways October 18,2011 is around the corner RIM will show the world how to make a real smartphone

    • Anonymous

Will that be before or after they fix their servers?

  • B_britt88

it activates fine in the store…preorder system was backed up to hell all day (contract acceptance) also apple online preorders were backed up. As a rep for at&t, not a single problem…sold 25 without a hiccup. Saw plenty of preorder issues though…still more iphones sold than any launch i can remember

Zach Epstein is growing more disappointed by the day. And so are the fandroids. I can hear them crying in unison, “Momma, I can’t take it anymore, I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all. Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandroid ooooh !!!”.
    :-)

    • Anonymous

loving the queen reference…plus for you my good sir

AT&T will suffer a nationwide network outage this weekend as, their system will iMplode. “Siri, how can I get service on the nation’s worst carrier without using a MicroCell Tower?”

  • JMD

Say what will about the iPhone and or Apple, but the fact is,…the iPhone is king of smartphones!!  I say this because any other cellphone manufacturer would kill to have sells numbers of any iPhone ever made,….let alone the iPhone 4s!  Apple surely has done well.  Props,…major pros!

    JMD

    • Anonymous

      “Siri, who goes
      baaaa-haaaa-haaaa-aaad…?”

      • yup

        you do

  • Anonymous

And few hours later they have activation problems

  • Justin_L

Well, obviously. Every year more people move to smartphones and more people purchase Apple.
