Windows 7 surpasses XP as most popular OS

Software

Windows 7 has surpassed XP as the most widely used operating system in the world according to new data from StatCounter. The operating system now has a 40.21% usage share of the global desktop OS market, compared to Windows XP, which has a 38.64% market share. Windows XP is trailed by Mac OS X and Linux. Microsoft first released Windows 7 in October of 2009, and its versatility and ability to run on everything from low-powered netbooks that were typically powered by Windows XP, to high-powered desktops and business machines has no doubt contributed to its success. Microsoft will release its next operating system, currently dubbed Windows 8, in late 2012.

It just proves there are a lot of stupid people out there!

Well, now, using Apple fanboy logic, selling the most makes it the best.
Right? I mean, that’s the argument for the iPhone – it sells more than
any single Android (or any other phone), so it’s the best phone. Or, does the large iPhone sales just “prove there are a lot of stupid people out there?”

Hey man, I loved XP, but Windows 7 is amazing.  Basically take everything good about XP and make it even better and you have windows 7.

Vista would have been fine if it wasn’t for all the compatability issues and crashing problems.  Windows 7 cleaned all that up and added a ton new features.  I have OSX Lion and Windows 7 and the truth is that Windows 7 is lightyears better than OSX.  OSX is comparible to XP at best.

      • Mat Babiak

Agreed. I think the OSX vs. XP analogy stands.

Vista was more like XP but flashier and just heavier on the system without really adding much substance. Windows 7 is light years ahead of anything else out there, and is terrific on all fronts, especially file management and stability.

When OSX is in 2011 introducing “features” like full screen windows, you know something’s wrong.

Well from the looks of that graph, ANY Win8 tablet is destined to fail, I mean that’s what were supposed to believe right? Love that marketplace…

Not after this post there missing like lebron James was in the NBA finals

It’s not the “most popular”. It just comes preinstalled with the millions of computers people are buying, as they retire XP machines. It has nothing to do with customer choice.

    • Neilstenson

All Mac’s come preinstalled with OSX, hardly consumer choice there either.

    • sirpaul

Consumers do have a choice – they go to the store and see it runs Win7…and they buy it. If they want OSX, they buy a Mac. They also have the choice of buying an OS of their choice and installing it on whatever they like (something Mac users do not).

    • Mat Babiak

The consumer has the choice of purchasing a computer with Windows XP. How is that not a consumer choice?

It is more popular then mac os but i still use vista at home   At office we have windows 7 but it is still the same os.  it still create phantom folders that you are not sure why there are inside the computer and you can not delete them because it might cripple your computer for unknown reason.  XP, Vista, or 7 there are basically the same products, i don’t see the different.  i still don’t know why people make such big deal about 7.  like i said all 3 operating system are almost identical.  no better or worse it is Microsoft Windows, same product with different skin on it.  I still have to reinstall from time to time because windows would just run slower everyday.  Now i just gave up and got a Mac Mini at home so i could use with my iPhone and iPad.  it just works flawlessly and “it just works.’  i still play MMO on Vista but other real work, I use a Mac.

    • Mat Babiak

My mother has a Macbook Air and you wouldn’t believe the number of times things go wrong, the system crashes, or random BS occurs that I have to try to fix. It’s broken now, hardware failure.

I dont think the “it just works” line is really applicable. The only app running is Google Chrome and the thing is slow as hell and buggy. OS X has far more issues than 7.

Isn’t it interesting that when it comes to iDevices, the faithful will use that same tired argument why iDevices are better: “The market has spoken and the masses choose iDevices thus it is better.” Yet when you bring up the desktop arena, the argument suddenly changes to: “This just proves there’s a lot of idiots out there.” Come back with a consistent, logical argument and we’ll talk iFan boys.

    • Jacob Martin

Or its “Its just software that runs on a computer”, but talk iDevice with them and its a revolution that can only be seen by those who own the latest iDevice. The rest are jealous.

OSX isn’t on iDevices you tool.

Note the lie in the article text, Windows 7 and Windows XP are trailed by Windows *Vista*, THEN trailed by OS X and Linux.
