RIM: All BlackBerry services have been restored

mobile

Research In Motion co-CEO Mike Lazaridis confirmed on a conference call Thursday morning that all BlackBerry services have been restored globally. The co-chief had issued a video apology to customers earlier on Thursday, offering reassurances that the company was doing everything in its power to resolve service interruptions that had extended into their fourth day. A switch failure followed by a large backlog of emails is being blamed for the service outage, which affected millions of BlackBerry users across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, North America and South America. RIM said it is putting fixes in place to prevent a recurrence of this issue in the future, and it is currently considering how it might reimburse carriers and BlackBerry users for the disruption caused by this week’s outages.

The burning question was and is:-  Was there ever a real fail-over facility?

      ANY
and EVERY CIO worth their title should be asking their team if this was
checked with RIM before they entrusted their business to them. If it
wasn’t they should ask to see EVIDENCE today. Before their CEO asks them
      the same question………

If this is not forthcoming you have your answer……….

Go Blackberry…. You are the BEST even when you let me down for a day or so :)

    • Smoke & Mirrors

“a day or so” ….. “a day or so”……. really? was it as short as that?

Poor RIM…. still in denial today ;-)

  • Bringit

restored…’til next time when it happens again.

    • zacamandapio

      For sure.

    • Applesucksfatties

Hey Starbucks douche.. you don’t have to worry about it because you’ll be sending greeting cards from you new iToy..   better hope your carrier’s network doesn’t go down though..  Your phone will really be a big paper weight while I’ll be surfing the net and BBM’ing people.   Suck on that.. loser!

      • Bringit

What is it with you with sucking and cocks?  Freak.
And please tell us how you plan to surf the net and BBM when BlackBerry service goes down all the time?  You are a total douche.

      • BGR commenters are morons

thats the first time its been down in almost 2 years..nice try though

      • Applesucksfatties

Yeah iDouche.. it goes down all the time….because once every 2 years is all the time.  Do you say your IQ is 150 when it is actually 50?

And if you had a hint of reading comprehension skills, you’d see that I said “Better hope your CARRIER’s NETWORK doesn’t go down…..  because your phone will be a big paperweight”.   The difference is that with the RIM outage yesterday, my BB still worked for making calls and sending texts…  you won’t be able to do ANYTHING with your phone when your carrier’s network goes down.

      • Smoke & Mirrors

        Dear Mr AppleSucks,
You appear to be struggling with technology more than usual today.  Should Mr Bringit’s carriers network go down he will indeed be left with a paper weight. Assuming you use the same carrier you too would be the proud owner of a paper weight.  Go and think about it. Use a piece of paper if it helps you. And get back to us when you are done.

Should however the flakey BlackBerry hub crash again. It is an entirely democratic process…. All Blackberry users are screwed irrespective of their carrier. And that my friend is what about 35 million people discovered this week.

        Stay happy :-)

Yeah they can compensate me by paying for my next Android device. I rely on my blackberry for day to day in matters from work to recreation. Stops working once, ok, we all have bad days. But how many times do they expect to let their service go down and keep me as a customer.

It wouldn’t be so bad if it was JUST BBM. But it was their whole BIS service. I had no maps, no gchat, no msn, no twitter, no email…all on top of no BBM.

So…RIM… this is where we part ways. I depend on my mobile device and you are undependable.

    • His Shadow

Undependable? How many outages has RIM had in the past (let’s say) 5 years?

      • zacamandapio

        His Shadow,
Probably two.  Never affected me.  And if did, I could still make phone calls, send and receive texts, go into a wife network, etc.
Although this didn’t affect me, I would much rather have a delay every two years than have every single email delayed 15 min, 30 min, 45 min, etc.

      • Smoke & Mirrors

Actually they’ve had countless outages. Ask any BES admin/mgr.
Not as catastrophic as this one though. And that’s why the corporate world is spooked. If a plane crashes because of a design fault in hardware or process it doesn’t matter whether it’s happened before.

What every CIO should demand is proof that it won’t happen again.

      • Antoine BAPST

C’mon, BES are corporate hosting and management.
BIS (what the outage is about) is RIM’s hosting & management.

      Sish Gupta,
I doubt BB will pay you to switch.  However, you’re welcome to jump ship.  People that whine just need to get a life.  If I’m tired of my Ford Pinto I’ll go buy something better, in lieu of just sitting down and complain and complain.
Yes, agreed that you pay a service, but nobody is perfect.

Or, like Applesucksfatties, when something sucks and does not even work (BlackBerry) you do not stand up like a man and admit the suckness – you just deny deny deny and hope it goes away.

Alrighty.. I’ve been down that road myself using Iphones for the last three years.  Enjoy having a phone that  mostly functions as a phone but alot of the time you will drop calls and have people saying you are breaking up.. You only have access to what apple tells you you can access.. no Flash, not adult or gay lesbian content.. Only the things deemed pure by apple.

Android is an okay choice.. I use an EVO 3d for a few weeks and it was alot nicer then my iphone but the UI was a bit combersome trying to sort through different apps/folders for emails, txt, facebook and twitter.. I’m worried about the ability for rouge apps to download and install/hack from websites.. there have been some reports of this happening already…

For me, the 9900 does everything perfectly and makes messaging a breeze so far.. I really never thought i would ever be back on a BB but the 9900 just rocks.. And other then yesterdays outage (Rogers, canada) there hasn’t been any issues!

As a BES user I question the need for data other then BBM to travel through RIM’s datacenters.  Why would encryption and compression not just happen over the internet between the device and my companies BES server?

I’m a BB user but this outage couldn’t have come at a worse time. IMO this outage will hurt RIM more than any other outage in the history of RIM. No matter how you spin it. This event will reinforce the negative perceptions people have about RIM and sway many people who are undecided about getting a BB. RIM is obviously falling behind here in the US. Other markets can weather the storm regarding this outage because sales aren’t as bad but in the US RIM will take the biggest hit. Just add this outage to the list of BB bias in the media & Blogs, BB delays, poor Blackberry playbook sales, PUBLIC Perception that BB is outdated. This will influence retail sales by pushing  people away from RIM products.

I’m waiting for the QNX phones to come out but the future of RIM here in the US appears gloomy…..

    • zacamandapio

      You’re right.
However, it doesn’t affect me with the media, playbook sales, perception and all.
I believe uninformed people get pull aside easier than if you know what you want, need, have.

      • Guest

You bring up a good point that uninformed people get pull aside easier. I’m afraid RIM will become like some past companies that diminish their presence in the US and evidentially falter when the rest of the world realizes its time to move on to something else. Nokia comes to mind. I understand no one stays number 1 forever. However RIM but can reinvent it’s image here in the US and remain revelent.

  • Aj

Mine didn’t go down during the last two outages. I did have problems with the outage before that. Maybe 5 years ago.

The thing with RIM is when the network is down, it makes news. If iphone has mail issues, who cares? The users just play pissed off birds or make farts sounds. Blackberry goes down ans you piss off people that matter.
