Sony: Hackers compromised 93,000 PSN, other online accounts

Security

Following a period of peace after weeks of cyberattacks launched against various Sony-run online networks, Sony has confirmed that hackers are once again targeting the company’s digital properties. The electronics giant said on Wednesday that it discovered a “large number” of sign-in attempts on its PlayStation Network, Sony Online Entertainment and Sony Entertainment Network between October 7th and the 10th. According to Sony, approximately 93,000 accounts were compromised when valid log-in details were verified during what appears to have been a brute force attack. The company says it has locked the affected accounts and that credit card data tied to the compromised accounts was not at risk.

I’m so tired of Sony’s horrible security. And the fact that you can’t edit your settings online makes things even worse.

Last Sony product ever. They’ve had their chances.

You and other say that now but as soon as PS4 gets released and it still has free PSN you’ll buy that too.

I own an XBOX and I won’t trash PS because I loved it until my PS2 died and I jumped on XBOX but I play it at my buddies every now and then and the biggest issue to me is the small controller size and lately their lack of security to fend off Hackers.

Kind of crazy how much they’ve been hit in the last 10 months.

Actually, I think I’ll get back into computer gaming. Sony has horrible security, I don’t like Microsoft products (or the company, for that matter), and Nintendo continually disappoints, despite me giving them numerous chances.

Yep, I won’t be getting the Wii U, and unlikely I’ll get the next gen Xbox (unless it does some amazing stuff beyond playing games), plus PC gaming with the free to play model is changing the industry.

Don’t be stupid, it doesn’t matter how amazing the PS4 is, there’s no point in buying it, or the Vita (as good as it looks). I like my personal information secure, and MS has at least shown they can do that.

This isnt a problem with Sonys security. The article says the hackers used brute force to gain access to the user accounts, which basically means people were using weak ass passwords as usual.

      • Bryguy

Well in this case it may not be security but security has been an issue for the past cases.  Regardless I agree outside of the weak passwords I wish this hacking business would stop.  it doesn’t help anyone and I’m not sure what type of message they are trying to send but in my eyes it isn’t a positive one.

@GregsTechBlog:disqus Good on you to get back into Comp gaming.  I used to love it but I just haven’t brought myself to go back as of yet.  At the rate these things are happening it may be sooner than later.  But a console is hard to give up.

Brute force is a security issue….. Almost any well secured system will lock out accounts for 10 minuites or more after 10 logins, with a delay of 20 seconds between logins. This pretty much kills brute force as it makes the time to attack one account much larger. Looks like they had no lockouts.

      • Robin Ashe

It is an issue with their security, they should have caught the brute force attacks right away, instead of after 3 days.

These nerds need to get a life, seriously.

  • whome?

I think it is sad because Sony is a Multibillion dollar company and they have no good security. Its the responsibility of Sony to have the security to protect their customers.  It just seems like Sony dont care at all.  Thats what happens when you get something for free and the company and puts so much money towards it.

That’s what I think too. Especially with that totally unfair and completely unnecessary “Arbitration Only” Class Action Lawsuit waiver that people are forced to accept in order to use PlayStation Network or download PSP digital copies of movies.

I know they have a “Put it in writing opt-out” option but that clause has no business being in the Terms Of Service agreement. Sony needs to be fair to its loyal customers.

I waited weeks before signing up to PSN after getting my PS3. A week after signing up I hear this?! Sony get your shit together.

  • R-D

This is exactly why I refused to install the new firmware update. This and the fact that they are blaming you for anything that happens to your PlayStation 3. That’s just not right. We need to get that clause made unconstitutional so that it is removed from the Terms Of Service agreement.

I love my XBOX…Perhaps Sony would look into hiring at least 1 person to monitor their crap network.

    De ja vu

  • Robin Ashe

After this, anyone who trusts Sony with personal information is an idiot. This is after they supposedly did an overhaul of their security system.

  • Bunk

They say data was not compromised.  However, I have a rarely used CC and VUDU was my last charge.  I received a call yesterday from my CC stating that there were unusual charges that I did not make.
