BlackBerry EMEA outage spills over to second day [updated]

mobile

BlackBerry users across Europe, the Middle East and Africa again find themselves without service on Tuesday as a bug that knocked millions of users offline on Monday has seemingly resurfaced. Research In Motion announced early Tuesday morning that BlackBerry service across the EMEA region had been restored, but the Associated Press later reported that Internet and messaging services for users across the region are again offline. The report was later confirmed by several carriers including T-Mobile UK, Vodafone UK and Etisalat in the United Arab Emirates. The cause of the outage is unclear, however a report on Monday attributed the massive service interruption to a bug on a RIM server in England.

UPDATE: RIM has stated that Tuesday’s outage was due to a core switch failure.

Exactly the kind of NEWS BGR should stick too. “BLACKBERRY NEWS ONLY”

    • numetheus

So you only get a few people reading? Sounds like bad business for BGR. Seriously though …. RIM is hurting because consumers find them irrelevant. They are not a contender to compete with the other Smartphones. Well …. maybe they can compete with Windows Phone 7; but even then I can see them losing to Microsoft.

  • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

Ok, serious question. Who still uses a Blackberry?

    • Anonymous

      ME and your MOMMA!

    • Applesucksfatties

Hey Apple fanboy in disguise….   70 million people do.. moron

      • Oops I did it again….

Not strictly true is it….. about 30m of these currently own a Blackberry but can’t use it :-)

      • Applesucksfatties

Actually, I think it was more like 10 million.. but hey, whatever….  #hit happens…  servers go down.   Does your car never need service or your house need repair?

    • Roly Gomez Puelles

a person who gets things done…..

      • Oops

         ……when it actually works ;-)

      • Applesucksfatties

Hey MORON…. all of the BlackBerrys in the world (other than in EMEA) work…   Get a life loser!!

  • RIMTastic

b0LdBuRrY should do a rap. Then again, his BB is probably ofline. Bummer.

    • BoLdBuRrY

Im RiGht hEre JigGa jiGgAaaa… hEheHehehe

      • RIMTastic

Best followup….evAr. Glad you’re here dude.

    • Applesucksfatties

My guess is that BoLdBuRrY isn’t located in EMEA…so his BlackBerry works just fine..

  • BurleyShells

Insert mark zuckerberg quote about how if servers are down even for a day people will move to something new

  • Anonymous

It went down again sometime between 7-8AM EST this morning for EMEA
users and is still down. I am hearing that an ETA for a fix is still 2-4
hours away so hopefully they stomp this bug fast. According to the telegraph this outage happened in RIM’s data center in Slough, Berkshire which serves this region.

    • RIMsucks

      Cuz BB sucks

      • Anonymous

        Just like your MOMMA!

      • Applesucksfatties

Sure buddy… more like RIMsucks sucks….

      • QNX

        Fail.

Wheres MAX with his wise words

    • Applesucksfatties

using the words “wise” and “max” in the same sentence is hilarious..  Isn’t that what they call an oxymoron?….   also fitting

  • Bringit

If BlackBerry loses service and a forest but no one uses BlackBerry anymore, does it matter?

    • Brought It

“and a forest” ?  You definitely must be an Android user, idiot.

      • Bringit

Yes, “and a forest” from all the trees you clearly waste wiping your anus 10 times a day.  It’s well documented.  However, please do not associate me in any way with Android.  That is the greatest insult of all!  (even worse than your beloved GhettoBerry).

    • Applesucksfatties

That sounds like something I read on a greeting card.  Can you confirm once you get your new i3GS+ greeting card maker?

  • Anonymous

This is what happens when no one is minding the store. RIM is trying to save money by cutting costs on services. Employees are busy updating their resumes instead of doing maintenance. I feel sorry for the Africans as BBM is their only method of communication. No one wants to type on a physical keyboard. RIM will be dead in two years.  true story™©®

    • Anonymous

i swear i heard you say that last year. so that would mean, dead in 1 year, right? or did you give them more hope?

    • Applesucksfatties

Yaaaaaawn..    I’m gonna start calling you Nyquil. because your cut n paste posts are putting me to sleep.

    • Ooops

I wonder if laying off 2000 real workers while keeping the same old bloated management empires seems like quite such a good idea now??

      just a question a journalist/analyst/shareholder might ask……..

      • Applesucksfatties

Hey Blip… did you get sick of trolling under your old name.. or do you want to double dip us with your BS?

      • Ooops

I know the last few days have been hard for you. But please do try to calm down. It’s not my fault RIM’s network is flaky.

      • Applesucksfatties

sure Blip…  network is working great for me.  The only problems I have are with reception issues on AT&T..

    • Anonymous

      Physical keyboard is timeless.
It’s like swiss watch, just works, always good.
      Touch-keyboard is a misery.

      • Applesucksfatties

Dont tell Scroat that as it throws his mindless rant about physical keyboards right out the window.

Scroat….now that you have learned that your theory about physical keyboards is flawed, please don’t go jumping off any bridges or accidentally take more than one of the prescription meds that you are currently on…

  • stranger

    That phone is gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

I think the same, but kind of useless.

      • zacamandapio

        Tu_Taita,
So after RIM’s servers go down for service or whatever the phone is useless?  You’re saying you can’t text and call your people you need the most?
Even after the servers going down you can make calls.  Something other phones lack. :)

    • Anonymous

Its a blackberry what you expect all RIM makes is gorgeous devices that work without downloading apps to make it work.

      • Ooops

        uhm….. work??

    • Ooops

Highly realistic depiction. Screen……….. totally blank ;-)

  • Anonymous

“Bobby Newhire, are you sure you fixed it this time?”
    “yea, boss.”
    “okay good. you’re fired.”

  • Jimmyjazz

U can criticize my BlackBurry but you can never call it a hackberry……..

    • Anonymous

      Nice one

    • Ooops

because a device with no connection is totally secure??

      • Applesucksfatties

No connection?  Last time I checked, it was just BIS servers that were down… can you not make a call out if a BIS server is down?   And speaking of secure..  how is your iPhone working for security..   considering a teenage boy can crack an iPhone in no time….    sign me up!!

  • Max

This is what happens when you rely on ancient tech. Oh and shitty dumb phones.

    • Anonymous

I wonder what you call (DEATH GRIP)

    • Applesucksfatties

      Dipshit..   nuff said.

  • QNX

      • Anonymous

        Hey im your daddy

      • QNX

        Now I’m ashamed.

  • http://MobileGenius.wordpress.com JM

Do any conspiracy theorists wonder if this has anything to do with RIM agreeing to potentially shut BB services off at the government’s request in the face of protests or other security threats?

    Testing? Hacking?

    • QNX

      That definately could be.

    • tedley

I heard a news blurb yesterday (in the US) that Anonymous was threatening to hit several major US banks soon.  I wonder if they actually hit RIM.  This does not sound like a simple server down issue. They would have resolved that by now.

If they did, that would most certainly explain RIM’s reticence about announcing it.  That would be the ultimate embarrassment for them.

      • Anonymous

You sound so stupid you need to log yourself out

      • tedley

Just making speculation which this forum is FULL of.   If you don’t have or are incapable of an intelligent response, please don’t waste the bandwidth.

      • Ooops

temper temper QNX. Anyway if he/she is a Blackberry user they’ve been logged out already by the sound of things :-)

    • zacamandapio

      JM,
      Updates.
This happens when they’re about to update the servers.  Since BIS 4.1 is about to be released, they’ve to update the servers as well.

  • Anonymous

QNX–Are you freakin’ serious??????  You’re the only one who supports BB, ok and maybe some others.  I respect that, but come on they are so done.  Until they come up with some kind of ‘revolutionary’ phone, maybe then will they be back.  But sorry man, get over it.  lol.

    • Anonymous

      70 million users idiot

      • Ooops

ha ha yep, eat s**t 70m flies can’t be wrong!!

  • Olly_b

when the ios 5.0 comes out 2mro with imessage bbm will suffer now

    • Anonymous

Another stupid post theres nothing imessage can do to scrape paint off BBM all it can do is kiss BBM azz. the infrastructure is beyond apple/imessage league idiot do your research before you talk BBM. The most powerful man on this planet (OBAMA) uses a BlackBerry senators mayors fortune 500 business owners, those analysts that DOOM RIM small businesses U.S Government, Government in other countries you are empty minded

      • Ooops

If Obama is travelling at the moment he, like the rest of us, might not be using his BlackBerry right now.

      • Applesucksfatties

A server went down… booo hooooo..

  • Max

That, folks, is a snapshot of a device straight out of 2002.

    • Applesucksfatties

Sure max….  How is that FIPS certification coming along?  I bet they won’t dream of certifying your i3GS+ Greeting Card maker…

      • Ooops

Oh that remark is sooooooooo RIM !!

Customer         : Hello, I want to buy a really nice smartphone, something I will enjoy
Shop Assistant : Well we have the latest iPhone 4S here bla bla bla bla
        Customer         :  It’s lovely, I love it……. but……
Shop Assistant : Yes, go on….
Customer         : Is it FIPS certified?
Shop Assistant : No sorry, not yet sir, but sir do you even know what FIPS is…?
        Customer         : I’m leaving!!

Now maybe in your dreams and the dreams of RIM’s CEOs this is how a typical sale goes…… but listen when I whisper it…………. it’s not. It’s really not. WAKE UP.

      • Applesucksfatties

Does the typical sale go like this?

customer: I’d like to buy a new smartphone
sales rep: well, we have the new iPhone over here
        customer: what can it do?
sales rep: well, you can make greeting cards and play games on it.
customer: how is it better than any of the other phones that you have here?
sales rep: well, you can make greeting cards and play games on it
        customer: I’ll take it….

  • Brandon

As a former Blackberry user, and now an iPhone user, I laugh when people say RIM is going down. As long as there are business users out there using smartphones, RIM will still be in business. Apple and Android haven’t gained the trust(or push email capabilities) of Govt employes and business execs to get them to leave Blackberry.

    • ooops

Agree. They will likely be around for a while yet. Shrinking back down to a 5th the size they are today might be painful, but they can just chuck a few thousand more employees over the side. Provided they do that quickly they have a chance of going back to the future.

      • Applesucksfatties

        T.R.O.L.L…..

      • Ooops

OK, so I admit I’m teasing you. But the thing is, what I say is right isn’t it? As illustrated by your answer being just an insult. Sometimes the truth hurts?

  • MakeK

Wed morning 10:30am Black berry service still out in South Africa. Its been out for 24hours now

    • Rocmon

Hey MakeK – can you help me understand what works and what doesn’t work when BIS servers are down?

      Phone – voice calls
      Phone – SMS
      Email – via BB client
      BBM
      Web browser
Various app – do any work? (maps, FB, ??)
