Apple releases iTunes 10.5 ahead of iOS 5 availability tomorrow

Software

Apple on Tuesday released the latest version of its iTunes software to the general public. ITunes 10.5 brings with it several anticipated new features including support for Apple’s iTunes in the Cloud service, and it will be required for users who wish to update an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to iOS 5 following its release on Wednesday. Apple’s change log for iTunes 10.5 is as follows:

What’s new in iTunes 10.5

  • iTunes in the Cloud. iTunes now stores your music and TV purchases in iCloud and makes them available on your devices anywhere, any time, at no additional cost.
    • Automatic Downloads. Purchase music from any device or computer and automatically download a copy to your Mac and iOS devices.
    • Download Previous Purchases. Download your past music, TV, app, and book purchases again, at no additional cost. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer on the iTunes Store.
  • Sync with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5.
  • Wi-Fi Syncing. Automatically sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes any time they’re both on the same Wi-Fi network.

ITunes 10.5 and iOS 5 will also finally enable Wi-Fi synchronization for iOS device users, allowing users to sync devices with iTunes without having to connect to a computer via USB.

    Apple FTW!!!

Why isn’t ITunes less of a bloated POS? . . . iCloud is nice but that bloddy software is still junk…

      • Anonymous

iTunes for Windows is always going to be a piece of shit. They’ve got absolute lock-in and zero motivation to make their product any more efficient.

      • Anonymous

        stop b!tching u little whiny zune b!tch !

      • Howard Brazee

The motivation should be there.    Look at all of the Windows users whose experience with Apple software is iTunes.    Why not show them Apple software that is designed to sell them on moving to Apple?

      • Anonymous

They’re already in the ecosystem. Once you’re locked into an ecosystem, it’s irritating and difficult to leave. If anything, having the software be so shit on a Windows machine while it’s so smooth on a Mac could just be a little icing on the “you should switch” cake.

        I don’t think it’s an accident.

      • IPwn

iTunes runs great with minimal resources on my MacBook pro!

        Thats a lie

In related news, Android will have their usual end of the year diarrhea and squirt out 10 “new” phones, all with the same fragmented malware messy crappy sh-t.

    • Heatfan316

      Yup, probably.

    • Anonymous

Jealous cuz’ you need bifocals to view your iScreen?

      • Bringit

Maybe an old man like you needs bifocals to see an iPhone – in that case go get one of the many Crapdroids with a laptop-ish screen that get squirted out daily like the diarrhea you love.

      • Anonymous

Lol, the 4s screen is much easier to read at anybdistance than the SII.

I love this. Have fun with those “new” features. Also, welcome to fragmentation! Your iPhone 4 will not have Siri, and upgrade to the 4S is required to use that part of iOS 5.

      • Heatfan316

You call that fragmentation? HA! You must have never owned an Android device tough guy. Sounds like someone has been waiting for any reason to scream fragmentation at Apple.

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

I own several devices from both camps. The fragmentation that is on Android is you don’t get an update so you don’t get new features. Apple’s way of doing it is giving you the update, without the new features. Sounds like someone can’t comprehend simple things such as fragmentation.

      • Heatfan316

Not to mention all the skins and embedded bloatware from different maufacturers. Developers are hesitant to create apps for this f-ed up operating system as it is far more tedious to develop for multiple versions of the same operating system (that’s why Apple will continue to dominate in THE most important catagory: apps AKA the only reason to buy a smartphone).

      • Ibegtodiffer

Honestly those updates where to try to stop jailbreakers by literally guessing where the ONE vulnerablity was at and sweeping minor improvements on the way some Unnecessary So without jailbreakers we’d see minor updates… Unlike android before rooting y’all was getting updates rather frequently:-/….. I’m just saying

      • Bringit

Glad you love it, more to follow.  iOS 5 is compatible with iPhone 4, suckah.

      • https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id?id=AItOawlAxNFPL6s9aNQtot0LWf_MzQaVNu6Dxic pseudo7

correct, however Siri is only available on 4S

      • Anonymous

But the original iPhone and iPhone 3G are not.  Only partial compatibility with 3GS.  You can’t claim iOS isn’t without fragmentation when apps specifically say when they aren’t compatible with older hardware.

      • Onehungjew

While you are right that these phones are not compatible you are missing one very important point. The 3GS is now over 2 years old which means any one who bought the phone 2 years ago is able to upgrade with the new os. On top of which every new and latest phone comes with the newest os. Unlike android where a lot of brand new phones still come with the old os and you need to wait a good year or two to get the new only to you because your still behind features…hence the Samsung fascinate…I’ve owned both types of phones but it’s nice knowing that even though I might lag a little behind because the newest thing just came out I’m still not totally behin.

so i hear’d it right, gizzly is wall street hooker ?!!

      • Grinse Wells

Lmao. Oh man. I love high school kids who think they’re smart. Bet you’re in the math class taught by a gym teacher.

      • Bringit

To @chripuck:disqus  below – there is a clear difference between fragmentation and being obsolete.  Android will sh-t out multiple phones in the same year (hell the same WEEK) that have a different OS.  The iPhone 3 came out in 2008.  Of course a phone that comes out 3 years later (iPhone 4S) will be able to do things it can’t.  That is not even close to the muddy malware Android fragmentation world.

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

iPhones can and do get hijacked via their browser regularly, and as long as an iPhone can be jailbroken that means it is an insecure operating system.

In terms of malware, Android tells you what a program does and what it accesses on your phone before you install it. If you agree to something that is clearly malware or worse then you are a moron. With that said, there are many in both camps.

      • IPwn

Android’s main flaw as far as apps go is when you download an app you HAVE to allow EVERYTHING it is requesting. For example, if I don’t want Facebook to have access to location services you can disable that app specifically in iOS on android you have to turn off location services completely.

    • Tjjohsnto

I’m laughing so hard right now…

    • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

At least we can root our DROIDS and update whenever we want…..oh wait

    • RIMTastic

” end of the year diarrhea…”

      That’s gold right there!

And you wrote that from your ANdroid phone!

Wow, this will change the iWorld.

Just in: version 10.5.5 will be available on Monday.

    • Heatfan316

      Cool, even more free upgrades.

    • RIMsucks

At least they release software. You’re probably still rockin Foyo.

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Android doesn’t need a sister program on a computer to update. We have this thing called OTA, that means over the air. It sends an update package to your phone over the internet and you then install it. You’ll be using it with your iOS 5, you know all of those nEw FeAtUrEz.

      • Heatfan316

Well then I guess that forth sentence wipes away your first three, now doesn’t it?

      • Anonymous

So, how come I can’t get an “OTA” to update my Motorola Droid from 2.2.2 to 2.3.5? Ice Cream Sandwich? Forget it. Oh, yeah. I remember why. Because Android is hopelessly fragmented. How many different versions of it are there? I’d bet it’s pretty damn near the same number of phone models that have been produced.

OEM’s crap out so many new models that they don’t have the resources to update the older ones. They don’t care as long as they make their money. Churn and burn. If they hang users out to dry on updates, then they figure we’ll want to upgrade even more to the next model. I’m upgrading all right. To the iPhone 4s. I can’t wait.

How can you be so foolish and blind to continue denying that Google’s strategy is horribly flawed? Google needs to take drastic steps to lock down their OS so that it is more uniform across device makers. Or, it needs to make the OEM’s sign agreements to support their devices with timely updates to the latest OS version for a specified amount of time so users like me don’t get screwed over.

I think there’s going to be a significant backlash against Android as more and more everyday (non-geek) people become frustrated with the platform. You’re going to see more and more people moving to Windows Phone 7, Apple’s iOS, and even Blackberry’s upcoming QNX OS because they want a consistent user experience. Android market share is going to start shrinking sometime next year. You just watch.

Actually, Sensei-Mod .602 (rooted) with Titanium Backup Pro, Droid 2 Bootstrapper and S.U. … But, nice try.

Incidentally, I can flash back to FROYO or flash any other custom ROM or Theme at will and I don’t need Crooney-Crummy Tooones!

    • Anonymous

You should see South park documentary which aired on Comedy Central on Sunday. Trey gets pissed about iTunes updating so often. That was the motivation behind creating the episode “Human Centipad” lol

Normally don’t watch S.P. but, that I would love to see.

Apple fans, welcome to 2008.  That’s when I could order stuff from my G1 using Amazon.  So innovating :)

    • Heatfan316

Been ordering from Amazon from iPad for a long ass time now. Do research before you open your mouth, otherwise you look stupid.

      • AppleSchmapple

“Been ordering from Amazon from iPad for a long ass time now.”

        You just proved my point.

      • Heatfan316

        You proved mine. Thank you.

    • IPwn

Your G1? You mean the phone that lacked an auto-rotation function, a soft keyboard and force closed ALL the time. I remember owning that phone too, it sucked.

The abomination that is named ‘iTunes’ continues to live on… *sigh*

  • Rafaellugomd

I am glad that the cloud is being activated for iTunes and devices.  Everyone except Verizon of course.  the verizon iPhone not having cloud services at all.  Why is Verizon always behind.  I changed from ATT due to voice quality and availability, but I am missing on the party and all the cool features.  Verizon better get on with it or I am back to ATT specially now that the 4S will be faster with Data.  Not to mention the poor customer service.  those guys have no clue.

    • somedude0123

      That’s a flat out lie

What happens with automatic downloading when you are running out of space on your device. My music library is over 32GB alone, not counting video.
