AMERICA’S FASTEST AND MOST RELIABLE 4G NETWORK EXPANDS TO MORE THAN 175 MARKETS ON NOV. 17

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. and SAN DIEGO – Verizon Wireless announced today at CTIA Enterprise and Applications™ 2011 that its 4G LTE network will be available in 178 markets by Nov. 17.  The leader in mobile broadband will turn on its 4G LTE network in 22 new cities and expand the network in four cities on Oct. 20, and will turn on the 4G LTE network in 13 cities and expand in five cities on Nov. 17, making the largest 4G LTE network in the county even bigger.

Consumers and businesses in these cities will be able to access the blazingly fast speeds of Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network with any of Verizon Wireless’ 13 4G LTE-enabled devices, including the new Pantech Breakout™ and DROID BIONIC™ by Motorola smartphones, and the 4G LTE-enabled Motorola XOOM™.

“When we launched our 4G LTE network just 43 weeks ago, we had an ambitious growth plan because we understood the impact 4G LTE could have on people’s lives,” said David Small, chief technical officer of Verizon Wireless.  “Americans in 178 cities from coast to coast will have access to the nation’s most reliable 4G network before Thanksgiving, allowing them to harness the speed and power of the network not only where they live but also where they travel.”

On Thursday, Oct. 20, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network will be available in Birmingham, Ala.; Modesto and Stockton, Calif.; Fort Myers, Fla.; Bloomington, Elkhart, Evansville, South Bend and Terre Haute, Ind.; Sioux City, Iowa; Hagerstown, Md.; Tupelo, Miss.; Albuquerque and Santa Fe, N.M.; Buffalo, N.Y.; Asheville, N.C.; Bartlesville, Okla.; Jackson and Martin, Tenn.; Greater Hampton Roads and Richmond, Va.; and Green Bay, Wis. Verizon Wireless is also expanding its 4G LTE network in Los Angeles and San Diego, Calif.; Washington, D.C.; and Erie, Pa. the same day.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, the company will turn on its 4G LTE network in Little Rock, Ark.; Savannah, Ga.; Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, Iowa; Lexington, Ky.; Kansas City and Springfield, Mo.; Lincoln, Neb.; Orange County, N.Y.; Greater Providence; Rapid City, S.D.; Roanoke, Va.; and Appleton, Wis.  The company is also making major 4G LTE expansions on Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Nashville, Tenn.

4G LTE Speed and Coverage

In real-world, fully loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.  When customers travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast.  Verizon Wireless’ 3G network is the most reliable network in the country and allows customers in 3G coverage areas who purchase 4G LTE devices today to take advantage of 4G LTE speeds when the faster network becomes available in their city.

Reliability: In and Beyond Major Cities

As the company with the most reliable 4G wireless network in the county and the first wireless company in the world to broadly deploy 4G LTE technology, Verizon Wireless is committed to building its 4G LTE network with the same performance and reliability for which it has long been recognized.  Verizon Wireless’ consistent focus on reliability is based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined deployment approach year after year.  The company’s 700 MHz spectrum gives Verizon Wireless specific advantages with 4G LTE, including a contiguous, nationwide network license.

Over the past year, Verizon Wireless has also worked to bring its 4G LTE network beyond major cities with its LTE in Rural America program.  The company is working with rural communications companies to collaboratively build and operate a 4G LTE network in those areas using the tower and backhaul assets of the rural company and Verizon Wireless’ core 4G LTE equipment and premium 700 MHz spectrum.  Already, 12 rural organizations have announced their participation in the LTE in Rural America program and have leased spectrum covering, in total, more than 2.6 million people in rural communities and nearly 82,000 square miles.  These companies include: Appalachian Wireless, Bluegrass Cellular, Carolina West/Clear Stream, Cellcom, Chariton Valley, Convergence Technologies, Cross Telephone, Custer Telephone Cooperative, Pioneer Cellular, S and R Communications, Strata Networks and Thumb Cellular.

    My area on the list.

    • fishkid13

      Mine too.

  • fishkid13

I’m strongly considering switching to Verizon seeing as they’re the only live 4G LTE market in my area. Especially if the Prime is exclusive.

  • drew dogg

VZW is a beast when it comes to coverage.

Totally switching to Verizon as soon as my contract with AT&T is done. Verizon doesn’t mess around when it builds its network!

  • IPwn

Verizon already has 4G LTE in Portland, OR.

    Which iPhone has 4G LTE?

    • Anonymous

      LOL

    • Incognito

The iPhone 4S will only support HSPA “4G”, that being said ATT is the carrier you want if you want faster spees. If you want a solid connection just go with Verizon.

      • Incognito

        Speeds*

      • http://twitter.com/harlizzle Harlimus Prime

you are smoking crack if you think hspa is as fast as verizon’s lte. even if the bandwidth is the same, latency is just terrible

      • Anonymous

the 42mbps hspa+ that tmobile has gives people the same experience you would get on an LTE handset. I’ve personally have been averaging between 8mbps-15mbps consistently on my htc amaze and that’s WITH all the other hspa devices running on that same bandwidth.  HSPA+ can be scaled all the way up to a whopping 672mbps!!! (Look up LTHE) and that too will be backwards compatible and offer speed bumps to older hspa phones.  Plus, HSPA phones are way better on battery life.

      :(

  • Jm

Look at that…Not one yet in New Jersey…..unbelievable!! Lol.

    • Tina87abbott

Yep love that they send announcements from Jersey but nothing solid in Jersey. I’m not in this God awful state by choice. Military sent us here.

      • Alesstil

        North nj is covered

      • jay

only in bergen county area, morris is still in thedark

      • Whitemeat22

Most of Morris is covered!  Hanover twp, morristown, and on and on…

Hello, Montana calling.  What? You can’t hear me?  That’s because we aren’t on the list for 4G.

    • Tylah2009

December they are launching a ton of new places. MT is one of the states.

    • BobWills

Should’ve gotten a Thunderbolt.  It doesn’t use 4G for voice, in any event.  ;)

  • Sloan

Hey wait a minute here!. What about sunny Palm Springs, CA? LOL

  • Ikedex

The lte network is already getting taxed. I used to pull 25+ Mb down 8Mb up.. Ping under 60… Now my ping is at 300 and not even half the speed… :-(

    • Anonymous

In SoCali many parts of our LTE network hangs around 4-5 Mbps.  A few months back it was close to 20 Mbps.

Oh well I figured those insane speeds wouldn’t last forever.

    • VZW Believer

Couple things….Advertised speeds are 5-12 Mbps on a loaded network.  Anything more than that is gravy.  Second, the latency is through Verizon’s network to the gateway of the public internet.  Your ping test is using the public internet which no cell carrier can control the latency.

    • http://www.thegadgetgurus.net Vic

Still getting 10Mbps+ in my area.

Where is NJ. thats where you from VZW.. give us some love.

Frakking awesome. You never hear AT&T rolling out anything–they only roll in my money! Or trying to eat TMO.

  • john

Verizon is going full throttle on their rollout.. We pay premium prices for premium service.. Makes me feel good that atleast I know where my money is going.. So much dedication on their part..

  • http://www.kstn.biz/ Dellas

    Amazing!!!

  • http://twitter.com/ggore Glenn Gore

Still only 10% of the state in Oklahoma.

  • Ajlurgio87

    Still nothing in NH…. :-(

  • Rich

There’s more to this announcement than what gets posted here.  I’m in the Grand Rapids, MI market, and while they mention Grand Rapids, it doesn’t really show you the breadth of the expansion.  From the local newspaper and Verizon Reps… here’s what’s being covered:

    Lakeshore
    • Holland
    • Grand Haven
    • Spring Lake
    • Nunica

    Grand Rapids
    • “All of downtown Grand Rapids”

    South of Grand Rapids
    • Cutlerville
    • Byron Center
    • Northern part of Caledonia
    • Hudsonville
    • Jamestown
    • Jenison

    West of Grand Rapids
    • Grandville
    • Walker
    • Coopersville

    North of Grand Rapids
    • Plainfield Township
    • Alpine Township
    • Belding
    • Rockford
    • Cannonsburg Township

    East of Grand Rapids
    • Ada Township
    • Cascade Township
    • Lowell
    • Alaska

That’s a *huge* expansion in size over what has been covered in Michigan’s second largest city.  From about a 5 mile diameter circle of ‘downtown’ to the full coverage in Grand Rapids, expanded out 25 miles to the lake shore, and surrounding “suburbs” of G.R. as well.

I’ve noticed in the Verizon stores that the 4G devices would show 4G connections the last few weeks since I was looking at the Bionic, but store employees wouldn’t say anything about expansion dates.

  • Didjeri

Am I to presume that ‘Greater Providence’ (without a state designation) means Rhode Island?

  • Jerzboy21

VZW has no 4G love for S Jersey!

  • http://mitchs.posterous.com Mitch Samuels

Okay, basically every state has multiple areas activated, except for Minnesota.

I mean, even South Dakota has more than one area with 4G.

    WHAT THE HELL VERIZON?

    • Bob

Totally agree…When will Rochester get it?

  • http://twitter.com/khtse Ka Hei Tse

Good job Verizon. Now, only if you have LTE phone that have good battery life…

  • Anonymous

I would love to join verizon and enjoy those speeds but I need no limits, sorry but I’m not paying for half, I want the whole cake. Until they bring that back, then I’ll join for right now, ill stay with my reasonable unlimited lol
