First iPhone 4S video reveals benchmark scores, Siri ‘raise to speak’ [video]

mobile

The first hands-on video of the iPhone 4S has hit the web and early benchmarks suggest the phone’s dual-core Apple A5 processor provides vast improvements over the A4 chip in the iPhone 4. The short one-minute clip from AppVV shows the iPhone 4S achieving a BrowserMark score of 89,567 compared to the iPhone 4′s score of 44,856. In addition, the iPhone 4S garnered a score of 2222.1ms from the JavaScript SunSpider benchmark. That is significantly faster than the iPhone 4, which scored 10669.4ms. The video also reveals a unique way to interact with Apple’s Siri voice-command engine. Inside the Settings menu, there is an option to “raise to speak,” which will allow a user to activate the service by simply raising the iPhone 4S to his or her head. Siri language settings and a few other options are also nestled inside the menu. Hit the jump for the full video clip.

That’s impressive (if true) but, can they make the screen bigger. That current screen size is better suited for women with small delicately fragile hands or kids.

    • Ma7fouz

haO, not only kids men too but not like you :)

      • Anonymous

I know and they have small delicately fragile hands just like the woMen.

It’s a phone and a device that’s typically made for one-handed interaction. I would like to see some men hold these devices in one hand and effortlessly touch the opposite side of the screen.

I wouldn’t mind a larger screen if the size of the device didn’t change.  I can’t help but imagine that it’s the overly masculine Android commercials that make people believe that a bigger screen is more ‘manly’.

      • Anonymous

It has less to do with masculinity versus iFemininity but, more to do with many people (yours truly iincluded) who don’t want puny screens. Once you’ve had more than 4 inches (of screen size) there’s simply no turning back. Even Jonathan once wrote, “4 inches was the ideal size.” Personally, 4.3″ to 5.3″ screen would be ideal for me.

      • Anonymous

You must have freakishly huge hands or a pituitary problem for you to use 5.3″ screen one-handed. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

The picture embedded has made the rounds on the web a lot in the past week and it’s a pretty good representation of the average hands against an iPhone and Android device. Unless you are constantly manipulating the device in your hand you can’t even reach all of the UI elements on the Galaxy.

      • Dwayne Williams

        I can.

      • Matd23

4.3 works wonderfully for me – I can just reach the top of the screen on my DX2 and have usually no trouble operating it one-handed.  I agree that the screen should be larger, even if it is just 4 inches, but just my opinion.

      • Anonymous

You seem to be overcompensating, with a larger screen size, for your other shortcomings. Is this true?
I, personally, find it much more effective to carry an HP TouchSmart PC and a generator to power it with me at all times.

What’s with the propensity to always use the phone with one hand?? Driving and texting? Holding a coke and Facebooking?? I just don’t get it…

So darn right! Men need big phones that create an artificial bulge in our pants! Hence 10 in screens!

      • Anonymous

In that case Goofan, hermano, I have three big bullges; two, of which, give me internet access and the third just gives me full access.

Your preoccupation with assigning gender and sexuality to the screen size of a cellphone likely speaks more to an instance of latent homosexuality on your part than it does to any actual defect of the device. That’s a textbook example, actually.

Now, would you be using the DSM IV or the (upcoming)) DSM V for your diagnosis? And, on what Axis?

By the way, after you Google DSM, be a good boy and research the psychological definition of “projection”.

      • Anonymous

My grandfather has a flip phone with a < 2 inch screen. We both know damn well that he is no more feminine than you or I. In fact he is quite manly, and wears a beard and built his own house 55 years ago to prove it.

Screen size is just a preference. You like having a small television with you at all times, and so do many other men… and women.  Women may actually prefer them over smaller options because they carry purses to put huge phones in. I have to admit, for the men it does add quite the bulge.  I can see the benefit of that.

    • Anonymous

@sometranssexual0123 have fun with your overpriced application launcher it will never be considered a smartphone in the tech world.

      • Anonymous

Not…the tech world! How else will we be able to validate our decisions if not through the acceptance of others??

  • Anonymous

So it looks like those “minor” tweaks to the internals might work out ok;)

  • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

My Galaxy S2′s are both far superior to this as they are open source and therefore free. I can run widgets and custom ROMS, can’t iPhone do that? No. The iPhone is for idiots who are just too r3tard3d to use a smart phone like a DROID such as the Galaxy S2.

    • homescrub

holy crap, your anus just leaked.

    • Anonymous

I’m also currently using a GS2. The whole point of the iPhone is the overall experience and it negates the need for custom ROMS. After a year and a half I’m heading back to iOS.

      • Anonymous

Then why have I and others jailbroken our phones for every single release?

      • Anonymous

Back to the future? 512MB RAM? No NFC? No memory cards? No dual band WiFi? No USB host mode (will be supported in IFC). In a couple of short months Nexus Prime and then SGSIII will leave iPhone in the dust. As an owner of GS2, I am sue you know all well that it does not need any custom ROMs and overall experience is great.

    • Anonymous

      Oh Norm.

    • Anonymous

Open source and free to manufacturers doesn’t automatically make a OS superior. I’m running CM7 on a Desire HD (Inspire) and wish it was less buggy like my iPhone 4 but I wanted a bigger screen.

    • Anonymous

Let us know when your gs2 doesnt lags and crash and your custom rom drains the shit out of your battery.

And let me know when Samsung let you have your ice cream sandwich.

      • Supadaddyme

You have no clue. Custom roms usually give you better battery life not worse.
Also it allows developers 99 times out of 100 to give you stuff like Ice cream sandwich before samsung actually releases it. wtf no offense man but really you are not well informed.  Now on to the other. Jail breaking people Jail break there phones so they can do stuff apple did not intend on them doing.  IOS and Android are both great OS.  I prefer Android but really you can’t go wrong either way.  I like the bigger screens and really its all about what you like.  4.5 to 4.7 is probably my ideal size and would never want to go back to 3.5 or 3.7.  That was one thing that did disappoint me about the 4s.  There are a great deal of other things that were impressive though.

    • Anonymous

The funny thing is, as much as you dis apple, you are just so infatuated by them you can’t help but click on and read every apple article, you also take the time to comment (negatively). Is it that important to you? Don’t waste your time. I just wasted my own time doing this because I come here seeking valuable input from the comments and find this junk.
I am not an android fan, not because I don’t respect them, but because I’ve never bothered to waste time with it… The last time I clicked on and read an article that had anything to do with android (other than apple comparisons)? Never. I just don’t care, so I don’t bother… You secretly love apple, and that’s why you give them tough love.

The best phone on the planet got better.  Meanwhile Android got some more fragmentation and malware.

You’re such a crappletranny Bringit, you’re so jealous of android it’s ridiculous all your posts are about apple’s superiority. How is an overpriced application launcher superior to android smartphone, keyword smartphone that’s something the iPhone is not and never will be. Bringit=$hit

This (as of yet unreleased) so called best phone can’ even beat 6 months old SGSII in browsing benchmark. SGSII gets 94834 points when Browsermark is run using Firefox. Not to mention little things like OLED, NFC, memory cards, dual band WiFi etc.

    • Anonymous

Your an idiot, competition leads to innovation.  New phones come out monthly, it sucks for those that just bought one, but great for those that are ready to buy or upgrade.  Think about all the poor saps with iPhone 4 that wanted to upgrade, but couldn’t, because there was nothing to upgrade to.  Now, they are stuck with a modest upgrade of a good phone with a dinky ass screen.  Good luck.

  • Jeff

Ageed, the only thing this phone really needs is a 4″ screen to be perfect. With consumers using their phones to do so much more, a larger screen is a necessity now. 3.5″ is just too small a screen. 4″ or 4.3″ seem to be a workable size. 4.5″… Well just get a tablet for anything greater than 4.3″.

    • Ashleigh

4″ and LTE and it would be perfect.

      • Anonymous

Once the iPhone has both of these my droid is going in the trash.

      • Anonymous

By the time this happens, Android phones will be even more ahead of iPhone.

    • Anonymous

What exactly makes a larger screen that is objectively both more difficult to use one-handed (for at least a large percentage of the population) and makes the entire device more difficult to fit in pockets a necessity?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Paul-Reed/1530570047 Paul Reed

i find this argument incredibly stupid. How freakin small are your pockets?? my 4 inch galaxy s has no issue with fitting in any of my pockets.

Would be nice for side by side comparison here. I guess it is to hard for someone to make a chart.

Siri looks fun til you get in a mall or any where there’s more than 1 person

    • Anonymous

All the reviews have said it works great in crowded places with background noise and others around so I’m not sure what you base your statement on.

  • http://profiles.google.com/mediogringo Dan Carter

That’s pretty damn impressive. For reference, the Galaxy S2 (Sprint) gets about 3300 in Sunspider and about 55,000 in BrowserMark. I’m sure ICS will improve those numbers some, but for now it looks like the 4s is the new king of the hill.

  • Booboolala2000

Man, I get 6600 on sunspider on my Droid Charge. And that’s a single core with Dolphin Browser. Wasvthe browser experience that horrible on the iPhone 4? That 10000 number seems ridiculous.

  • fred

got just over 3000 on my droid2, so over 10,000 is ridiculously bad for the iphone 4. Thank Jobs that the 4s at least beat my 1+ year old phone

    • Flintchesthair

      10000 is a made up #

Fandroids will start blowing up bridges when they hear this. Oh wait…let them blow up their cheap devices first when their out of control customizations FAIL. Those smart asses….Now I get it, at least their parents would be proud of them by trying to screw up/experimenting on the device since they failed the math class for the nth time. LOL !!!!

Andy Rubin was VERY prophetic when he named his baby “Android”. FAndroids don’t have a natural thinking ability. SIRI’s Artificial Intelligence is way smarter than these smart assess.

    Bwa-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaaaa!!!!!

    • Anonymous

Cheap?  Someone has bonked his surfboard one time to many….
Most top end smartphones run the same price range…. not sure where you are shopping.Customizations?  Tell that to the jailbreak community, a number of the iOS improvements started there.I use an i4 and can confirm that “customizing” offers so much standard functionality that Apple neglects to include.

      fanboys…… sheesh!

      • Anonymous

Wow your Android brain (Android as in lacking natural thinking ability) is being manifested by how you respond to the subject. LOL!!! The problem with the fandroids is they think by using the word “customization” heavily, they come across as smart. Well they’re not and YOU are not. Mind you, if you are able to create a service in your device in binaries then that is pure customization. But if the service is already there among so many, and you want to activate it, you are only enabling that service. So having said that, taking advantage of that extra functionality doesn’t equate to customization. “Customization” to us who can write code is not taken too lightly, remember that. So for today’s lesson, as a fandroid, stop bragging around that you can “customize” since the customization you are bragging about is really a simple matter and any grade level kid can do it.

      • You’re retahdid

Stop talking. iPhone is good so is Android!
Customization being easy is a good thing dummy!!!!

Btw if you write code it must be some shit code if you don’t believe in ease of use…..

  • Hedaleth

Siri..”What can I help you with?”…Somehow reminds me of the old Microsoft Paperclip…

Iphone 4 with 5.0 scores 52436 and 3637.9.  Still a nice increase but not nearly as dramatic as indicated.

  • Anonymous

That was my concern too, but the demo videos all seem pretty noisy when the tech journalists are doing their hands on it and it works well. We’ll see.

  • Flintchesthair

Just ran sunspider in my iPhone 4 an got 4245.4ms. I think your numbers are a bit off.
