Forget Android and iOS, U.S. consumers want Windows tablets

Tablets

U.S. consumers want a tablet powered by Microsoft’s Windows Operating system, not iOS, according to new research published by Boston Consulting Group. The firm found 42% of U.S. consumers would prefer a Windows-powered tablet, while just 27% would prefer iOS on a tablet. Fewer consumers would prefer Android (20%), QNX (9%) and HP’s now deceased webOS (3%). The findings were not just limited to the United States, either. BCG found that 44% of Chinese customers prefer Windows on a tablet to iOS (34%). AllThingsD notes that the company’s findings match those published recently by Forrester Research, which concluded its results were an indication of the popularity of Microsoft’s Windows brand among consumers. Additionally, RBC Capital Markets expects Microsoft’s Windows 8 platform to own 15% of the tablet market by 2014. Microsoft showed off a batch of its first Windows 8 powered notebooks, PCs and tablets in September, but the final products are not expected to hit retail shelves until late next year.

If I am to carry a tablet that is 10-inches or more, yes I would rather it works like a laptop running full OS like Windows 8 or some future tablet-optimised version of OSX. And back at the office/home, I would plug that with a full size monitor and keyboard and use it as like a desktop.

My Acer 500 has a keyboard plugged into it (built into the case) and can hook up to a large monitor.  I plan on moving away from the bloated Windows software in the near future.  I can pretty much live without it now.

i own an ipad and a x220t lenovo, full laptop that can be a tablet, and i can say i used my ipad for 20 min total and my x220t constantly. before i got the x220t i was going to get a windows tablet from hp or asus the slates, that run windows…. it the fact i can run the same programs cross platforms, desktop, laptop, tablet,

on my ipad i need 3rd party solutions to do the same thing, which means each new app, each different os, its something else i have to figure out.

my only problem with microsoft is this:

microsoft tried to bring windows to mobile, windows mobile/ce etc all were terrible. now microsoft is trying to bring phones to desktops, which is also annoying. metro on touch ui is annoying. bringing up the desktop does not show the running forever metro apps etc.

Surprising! How many people participated in the poll?

Where the hell are these people who want Windows tablets, hell have they even used a windows phone maybe if they did they would see a tablet wouldn’t exactly be as thrilling as they apparently expect it to be *shudders at the thought of using a windows tablet*

As I type this on my MBP, I am listening to Zune Pass (iOS does not have subscription music) on my Samsung Focus, which replaced an iPhone 3G.  The UI on WP7 is, imo, vastly superior to iOS – it is easier to use, more intuitive and fluid than iOS.

I put the developers preview of Win8 on an old Dell Mini Netbook, and it runs better than Win7 or the Hackintosh I did to it, and as well as Ubuntu which Win8 replaced.

Win8 will be great on tablets.

So Todd, are you starting your own comedy show ?

Did Bomber and the flying money squad from Redmond mail this data to you directly as start-up material?

    This is hilarious…..

Not at all surprising. A lot of people want real tools and not smartphone on steroid toys. Personally I can not wait until a Windows 8 tablet comes out.

I think the real question to ask here is why do the people that were surveyed think they want a Windows powered tablet.  To me this seems more like a result of product recognition than anything else.

They didn’t tell you but the survey was done in Redmond, WA.   :-)

Give them the time to try this fantomatics “windows-tablets” and after we talk about it XD

Funny how some of the RIM haters on this blog say nobody wants a PlayBook.. yet approx 10% of the people surveyed like QNX.. and only 20% liked Android.

I love my netbook and having something a lot lighter with the same OS characteristics would be fantastic. Just picturing myself running virtual box on the go makes my heart rate increase.

I would argue that most people don’t even know what an operating system is….but if they do know one it would be Windows.  Ask them if they want an iPad or a Windows tablet?

  • Zabon37

That is absolutely BS. I wonder how much MS paid for this research.

For productivity, a windows tablet is a must because people buying tablets want to have microsoft office in their tablet. But if you’re a rich kid who always want entertainment, an apple ipad would be great for you..
