Android, iOS continue to absorb BlackBerry market share in U.S.

ComScore released its most recent U.S. Mobile Subscriber Report on Wednesday, which suggests that iOS and Android are continuing to absorb share at the expense of RIM’s BlackBerry OS in the United States. Android’s market share increased 5.6 points to 43.7% during the three month period ending in August. iOS grew 0.7 points to a 27.3% share during the same period. Meanwhile, RIM dropped 5 percentage points to a 19.7% and Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform and Symbian both remained relatively flat, losing just 0.1 percentage points and 0.3 percentage points, respectively. Samsung’s grip on the overall mobile phone market continued to grow in the U.S. It now has a 25.3% share, up from 24.8% in May, and is followed by LG (21%), Motorola (14%), Apple (9.8%) and RIM (7.1%). 84.5 million U.S. residents now carry a smartphone, up 10% as noted in the comScore’s May report. comScore Releases Report “iPhone 5: Implications for the Operator Industry”

(NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released data from the comScore MobiLens service, reporting key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending August 2011. The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 25.3 percent market share. Google Android continued to gain ground in the smartphone market reaching 43.7 percent market share.

OEM Market Share

For the three-month average period ending in August, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices. Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 25.3 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers (up 0.5 percentage points from the prior three-month period), followed by LG with 21.0 percent share and Motorola with 14.0 percent share. Apple strengthened its position at #4 with 9.8 percent share of mobile subscribers (up 1.1 percentage points), while RIM rounded out the top five with 7.1 percent share.

Smartphone Platform Market Share

84.5 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in August, up 10 percent from the preceding three month period. Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with 43.7 percent market share, up 5.6 percentage points from the prior three-month period. Apple strengthened its #2 position, growing 0.7 percentage points to 27.3 percent of the smartphone market. RIM ranked third with 19.7 percent share, followed by Microsoft (5.7 percent) and Symbian (1.8 percent).

Mobile Content Usage

In August, 70 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up 1.0 percentage points. Browsers were used by 42.1 percent of subscribers (up 2.3 percentage points), while downloaded applications were used by 41.6 percent (up 3.0 percentage points). Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 2.3 percentage points to 30.9 percent of mobile subscribers. Game-playing was done by 28.5 percent of the mobile audience (up 1.6 percentage points), while 20.7 percent listened to music on their phones (up 2.1 percentage points).

      These are August numbers, already reflected in RIM’s Q2 release. The up 1% or 2% you saw was from Chitika for September numbers, after BB7 devices came out. Look for a huge beat from RIM in Q3.

      Uhhhh yeah. It bounces. That’s what stocks do. The only problem is they drop and never bounce back. Right now they are at around 21. They were above 30 just 2 months ago. They dipped under 20 and now back at 21. There is absolutely no confidence they will be on a consistent upward trend. I’m very certain they will dip under 20 again. They have to do something soon. RIM is REALLY sucking. No surprise though.

    Just shows how inconsistent these companies are.  A couple days ago, there was an article here about how RIM’s share last quarter went up 1.5% while Apple declined ~.8% and Android went up .1%.

      You know what you get with a death to iOS, the death of Android in the end from slacking off!  No Competition is a dumb thing.  You fandroids only seem to have half a brain.   Myself, I’m all for Android out there, even kicking butt, it pushes Apple to do better.   The 4S was quite predicable, it follows Apple’s past.  Next year will be the time for a Major Upgrade/Change once again with the iPhone5.  Which will push Google to make Android that much better, but again you fandroids are so short sited.   It really is quite a dumb statement.   Then again I expect nothing but blind love for Android and F everyone else.   With all the HATE most of you put out, it’s pretty much what I expect.

    The main problem is that a bunch of people that use blackberries don’t even know what’s good about them. I own both a blackberry and a iPhone4, that will soon be upgraded to a iPhone4s and wouldn’t trade none of them for anything in the world. The blackberry is for secure communication and the iPhone handles everything else.

      Really how secure is it?  Because those messages can and DO get intercepted by the Government of a few countries at least!!!

      With iOS5, there will be imessage which is basically the SAME THING.   So what you can do on your Blackberry to other Blackberry users, you can do the same thing on your iPhone with other iPhone users!

      By the way, do you really need to go from a 4 to a 4S?  I’ll wait my 2 years and get the Iphone 5 which will be a Major Upgrade going by Apples track record.  Then again I guess you’ll also just get the 5 at the time also.  I’ll assume your one that likes to upgrade every year.  Updaing to iOS5 for me will tie me over until next year.

    I would say Android is eating up BlackBerry’s market share, not iOS.  iOS was relatively flat while Androids gains pretty much matched what RIM lost.  Most BlackBerry owners that wanted to switch to iOS already did so while Android is still gaining popularity.  You are going to start seeing iOS level off completely and possible start to lose minimal market share.

      Apple is not loosing market share, they are still growing, just a lot less then Android is growing.  Once they wipe out what’s left of everyone else, that’s it.  Android is not going to have much of a effect on the iphone!  It’s just be a lot of in-fighing between all the Android phone makers.  Like for PC’s,  HP fighting Dell, still both a PC, While Apple has stayed about the Same, but growing a little.  Doing better really then most everyone else.   it’ll be the same with the phones, and just the phones.

      No Android will eat up most of what’s left of blackberry and RIM, Apple a Tiny bit, but then Android will flatten out.  They aren’t really going to eat into the iPhone much if at all. at that point.  It’s be like the PC wars, everyone trying to sell a cheaper and cheaper PC with better and better specs, a Spec War, trying to grow a tiny bit of market share over that other PC maker.  While Apple is selling PC’s and growing a little bit.   Replace PC with Android now.  They’ll be like, Get my Android phone it’s better, the screen is .1 ” larger then everyone else.  No get my Android Phone, the CPU is Quad Core and .1 Mhz faster then theirs.  This is what it’s going to turn into at some point.  

      Apple is not fighting with anyone.  Apple really doesn’t publish specs for their Hardware.  Did Apple say how much Memory the iphone4S had? (1 Gig) Of course not, it’s not listed.  Did Apple say how fast the GPU was, No, just that it was 7 times faster then the last iphone.  It’s not how Apple plays the game.   Look you already have Android playing the screen size game.  Mine is 4″, oh well mine in 4.5″, well mine is 4.6″, I hear now the’ll be a 5.3″ screen on a Android phone?  Get it over with and do a 7″ Android screen phone. Really there’s only one way to go.

      I know Apple will release a iphone5 with a MAJOR update next.  This is just following Apples Track Record.   The only question is, will it be around June like in the past, or is this new Month going to be the new iPhone Release month for the Future?   There’s no question the iPhone4S well sell great!  As well as the IPhone4?  Maybe not, but it’s a huge Upgrade for everyone that’s been waiting with their 3GS phones.   I have the 4, iOS5 will be good enough for me until I get the iPhone5 next year.  Maybe NFC will be figured out by then completely, Faster Download speeds will be possible everywhere to make that worth it.  Figuring out how to get a Larger Screen and still call it a Retina Display!   

      Out outside may look the same, the the inside is completely different.

        How will you be able to tell the difference between the iphone 4 and iphone 4s to the average Joe consumer. Same look and feel. Tech geeks know the difference between single core and dual core but not everyone else

        Ummm, they won’t care in that case and just buy the iPhone anyway so it’s a mute point. It’s the same as buying a Android phone. Do you really think they’re looking at specs or just picking whatever phone looks good to them! After that it’s price. More expensive must be better then cheaper. Also brand recognition plays a good part. Apple sells, even Samsung sells better to other brands.
