Apple’s iPhone 3GS drops to free on contract, iPhone 4 now $99

mobile

Apple announced during its press conference in Cupertino, California on Tuesday that its iPhone 3GS smartphone is now available for free on contract. The company did not not clarify whether it will continue to build new supply or if this is a limited time offer while Apple and its partners burn through remaining inventory. Apple also said that its previous-generation iPhone 4, soon to be replaced by the iPhone 4S, will drop to $99 on contract.

So im guessing the cheap ones wil not come to Sprint?

    • Michael Scrip

      Good question…

I know the 3GS has only been on GSM….. not sure about the new “old” iPhone 4 coming to Sprint.

They didn’t even say much about it…. “It’s on Sprint now… good bye”

Sprint has an event Oct 7 so hopefully they can shed more light. Today was an “Apple” event. I did feel it was also very anticlimactic how it was announced that Sprint would get it too

      • Plazmic Flame

I guess this is an USA thing because iPhone 3GS devices have been free on contract for a while in Canada…

      • Carmen

        Isn’t it on a three-year contract though?

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

No, only 4S will be for Sprint. 3GS is still AT&T only.

    • Carmen

The Apple website says that the iPhone 4 will come to sprint.

  • Fat Mams

What a fail .. updated internals and Siri? and that took a year and a half .. looks like I am getting the Samsung Galaxy 2 ..

    • Anonymous

      and well you should.

    • Carmen

Cool.  I soooo was wondering what you were going to get.

wait for nexus prime!!! announcement next tuesday!

    • Anonymous

I say wait for the Nexus. It should be based off SGSII and will be stock Android. That’s what Samsung did with Nexus S with a few modifications.

BUT BUT BUT BUT.. Wheres the iphone 5? I thought BGR was sure it was being announced today..

    fail.

WHo in their tight mind comes out with the same phone from 16months ago with different guts? Why would you do that to your fan base or anyone thinking about investing in your company! Obviously apple doesn’t care!

This will go down in history as the worst announcement in Apple’s history since the departure of Steve Jobs.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Fuller/584626026 Mike Fuller

Meh..  The did it with the 3gs and now the 4s.

    • Carmen

Yeah, this article isn’t about that!  Plus, there have been many a phone that have just gotten an update to the internals (like the Droid X) but you probably already knew that and just want to be pissed to seem important and like you know what you are talking about.  To say that they don’t care about their “fan base” which is really their customer base or their investors is ridiculous considering that this thing will still sell and the margins will be spectacular.  Secondly, what’s wrong with coming up with a phone that minus the outer shell and screen is COMPLETELY redesigned.  And there’s not even anything worth saying about the “worst announcement in Apple’s history” thing.

      • Anonymous

The original droid x and the droid x2 is not identical. First off do your homework. Secondly you are making a douche out of yourself when you say it will sell and margins will be spectacular. You need to see the market, stocks already gone down.

      • sirpaul

        And gone back up!

      • Carmen

Droid X and Droid X2 are really, really similar looking. Are they not?

By spectacular margins, I simply mean that R & D is spread out over two product life cycles and not a full redesign every year.

      • Anonymous

They are but they are not the same exact phone hardware wise with different guts like the iphone 4 and iphone 4s is

      • Carmen

Dude. Man, come on man.  You’re ripping on me for “doing my homework” and I just did.  I looked up both phones and compared pictures.  They look quite similar all around the exterior. Like really similar.  I’m sure the specs are quite a bit different and that they would look a lot different on the inside, but isn’t your original point about the look?

So you don’t have to scroll I’ll just paste what you wrote here:

“WHo in their tight mind comes out with the same phone from 16months ago with different guts?”

Now, if the ‘guts’ are different, which means the shit on the inside, then what’s the same? The ‘outside’. Just like the Droid X and X2.  Just like the Droid and Droid 2 kind of.  I’m sure there’s a few more examples.

      • Carmen

        (repeat post)

    • Anonymous

isnt that kinda an oxymoron “same phone with different guts”? it’s not the same phone if it has different guts…

to put it out there, the announcement didnt meet my expectations either, but I feel it was just overhyped. *ahem* bgr.

i am sad the new iphone can not make me a sandwich as well just like the rest of you, but faster, better camera and batt life, sentience (kidding). Besides 4g and NFC (which would have killed the battery life, and was not even rumored to be in this release), what else did people really expect/want from the next iphone?

        Bigger screen, thinner body

I thought Sprint had and Exclusive on iPhone 5. did i miss something?

      • Carmen

        Where’s the # hashtag?

    • Ulysses Grant

No, you did not. The problem is you are too early… Sprint had an exclusive on iPhone 5 in late 2012.

WHERE ARE ALL THE ANALYSTS NOW ??????

    • Ulysses Grant

LOL…they are all hiding now.  Don’t worry, they will all come out once Blackberry announced its QNX product.  You know…analysts being anal.

Out buying lunch for the office after getting SO SO SO many things wrong about the iPhone 4S

    • Yea Right

Their at Zach Epsteins house for the iPhone 4S circle jerk their having tonight!! All their iPhones will be on vibrate too!!!!!

  • Anonymous

    so the question is…

Will the 3GS be the 3rd most popular phone at the end of 2012? (behind the iPhone 4s, and iPhone 4 at 99?)

    or in other words….
         Can Android compete with Free?

    • Anonymous

Things will get interesting that is for sure. AT&T has had the iPhone 4 & 3G S has the top two selling smartphones, now they will add a third. Verizon and Sprint will both have the iPhone 4 and 4S, we will see if the iPhone 4S takes the #1 spot and the 4 takes the #2 spot on these carriers.

    • andy

This free thing annoys me. There is no such thing as a free cellphone. If it didn’t come with a contract, yes it would be free. They are basically offering you a free cellphone with a 2K bill.

      • Anonymous

        …. and your point is?

tea, booze, tobacco, cocaine… the marketing method hasn’t changed in a 1000 years

        ‘The first taste is free….’

    • Bringit

      nope

    • Carmen

Maybe, but it’s only on AT&T. That’ll hurt it a bit.

  • http://twitter.com/pceasy PC Easy

What happened to the “dramatic” redesign of the iPhone 5? What happened to that exclusive deal with Sprint?

  • Bgrical

And where is BGR who boldly proclaimed that apple wound intro the 4s *AND* 5 ?

  • JP

Can’t believe Apple is still selling a phone that debuted in June 2009 on new 2-year contracts.  It’s going to be (even more) ancient by the time those terms are up!

  • zacamandapio

    Time to license iOS Apple.

    • Anonymous

I agree cause at this point they will not beat Android. They better hope windows mobile don’t catch them in market share.

  • Anonymous

They should just stop selling this POS period. With android still chewing away at there marketshare and RIM shares are rising everyday apple should just pull the plug before WP7,android and RIM make them.

    • scroat

      Are you mentally retarded?

  • CMC

Wireless Contract: You agree to pay them for a minimum of 2 years.  They provide no guarantee that anything will work at all ever anywhere.  As is, no warranty for service.  If you damage them in any way, they can sue you and collect actual damages, plus legal fees.  If they damage you, they are liable for one month of service only.  They may increase pricing and/or terminate services as they wish.  You however, may not lower the monthly spend to them.

Nothing to do with the phone here, just felt like pointing out some interesting tid bits of wireless ‘contracts’…
