Sony Ericsson CEO: We underestimated the iPhone

Business

Sony Ericsson’s CEO Bert Nordberg recently sat down for an interview with The Wall Street Journal during which he said his company “should have taken the iPhone more seriously when it arrived in 2007.” Norgberg reiterated Sony Ericsson’s intentions to dissolve its feature phone business by the middle of next year as it focuses more on building out Android and broadening its U.S. portfolio. “By now, some 70% of our sales stem from smartphones and some time in the middle of next year, I estimate that we will be a complete smartphone company,” he said. The Wall Street Journal also asked Nordberg why his company has not yet adopted dual-core processors or next-generation wireless technologies such as WiMAX or LTE. “We are quite careful throwing ourselves into new technology, simply because there is no guarantee that consumers will buy, just because we develop it,” Nordberg explained.

Sony Ericsson is also interested with sticking with Android as its primary smartphone operating system instead of adopting a secondary one such as Windows Phone. “At this point I wouldn’t feel comfortable investing in a platform that isn’t as good as the one that we currently use,” Nordberg said. “Therefore we have remained with Android, but I am quite curious about Windows Phone.”

Nordberg also confirmed Sony Ericsson would have been interested in acquiring Motorola Mobility before Google announced its deal, but admitted “before you go shopping you have to become rich.”

Sony Ericsson CEO: We dun goofed

      ?

    • Adam Sobotka

Shit happen. Even Microsoft was pwdned so fast that they didn’t even believed it. It will happen to Apple in same way. There is only one difference: if shit happen and you are playing old game, how fast you can embrace change and make money on new wave. Look at Samsung.

STOP PRESS :-  In a shock turn around a CEO from another competitor claimed that at no time did he underestimate the iPhone, his company did not have a problem, and people simply picked on his company because it’s products were so iconic…….

sony underestimated every competitor from TVs (samsung), games (xbox), and smartphones (apple) the only thing they seem to be relevant in is cameras

      • somedude0123

Canon and Nikon smoke them in the camera department.

I read this same story on 2 other mobile phone blogs and the majority of the conversation with the CEO was about Windows Phone, Android, smartphones, and feature phones.
Leave it to the iStaff at BGR to take one line and spin it into an iPhone-praising article…

    No shit dumbass.

  • http://twitter.com/Glansburgs Steven Glansburg

They underestimated just about every other OEM too.  Sony Ericcson has been crap for years now.

these ceo guys get paid shit load of money, yet they are completely oblivious of trends and new emerging technologies.

it took verizon another 2-3 years to bring the first droid phone to compete with iphone

    • Anonymous

G1 was released in October 2008. Moto Droid was released October 2009. That would be 12 months.

      I would’ve also accepted 1-2 years. ;)

    • Sonya

What are you smoking? When the LG Voyager for Verizon came out in 2007 it blew the iPhone out of the water.

    ughh

You just underestimated Win Phone too, you fat moron.

  • Plazmic Flame

Wait a second…. “he’s curious” about WP7??? You mean you haven’t even taken one guy to check out the platform and see if it’s worth your time??? Really now?! My mind is blown…

    • somedude0123

The man’s an idiot, no wonder they suck balls.

  • ibiza2004

Sony also underestimated the the mp3 player (lost market control to iPod). The also underestimated the Nintendo Wii (Controller, now has the PS Move). They underestimate the iPhone (now smokes the compeition).

They should also underestimate tablets, augmented reality and other emerging technologies while they are at it.

  • WPUsr

At this point, if Sony Ericsson did bring out a
Windows Phone I wouldn’t feel comfortable investing in a handset maker that
isn’t as good as the ones that we currently use.

    • Plazmic Flame

But with WP7, how could you not be confident in the handset maker.

For the phone manufactures its actually the opposite of Android when it comes to WP7. With Android, it’s all about software for the most part, you customize the hell out of the UI and hope people will be drawn to it. With WP7, Microsoft has pretty much laid it out there. You will need to have some talent under your wing to get some noticeable apps out but WP7, it’s all about hardware design.

I’m sure if Sony made WP7 devices, they could take Nokia head on. Software wouldn’t be an issue because Microsoft pushes the updates.

Hold up, wait… Sony Ericsson has NO PHONES with dual-core processors or WiMAX or LTE?!?!?!

…and the CEO’s response is “We are quite careful throwing ourselves into those new fangled technologies.”

Well, I’ll be tarred in feather. Sounds like someone’s asleep at the wheel.

Cyber-Shot branded Android/WM7 PHONE COULD MAKE A PLASH

  • http://www.thegadgetgurus.net Vic

So can someone explain how being “cautious” about new technology like dual-core processors and 4G is a smart strategy when everyone else is taking advantage of it, especially to differentiate themselves from the iPhone?

    • somedude0123

      It’s smart to a dumbass.

Every time i used to see someone with one of those Sony Ericcson phones the logo used to look like a logo off a cigarette pack.

  • Anonymous

if ever there were a company I’d consider more fail than Blackberry, Sony Ericsson would fit the bill…
I would buy a used, scratched up, cracked screen iPhone 3G before I would buy anything S.Ericsson makes.
Ignoring WP7 will bite Ericsson in the arse just like everything else Sony is too scared to get into.
Sony was once a innovative, high tech, sought after logo, now, people just think of them as regular junk like radio shack brand.

  • Anonymous

Geez who didn’t. Next week on bgr the Samsung Electronics CEO Choi Gee Sung says we underestimated the iPhone. The week after that the Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha says we underestimated the iPhone. The week after Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer says shit yeah I underestimated the iPhone. Just check out the retarded interview I did on you tube in 2007 when I made a arse out of myself.

  • Adam Sobotka

Good that he admits it. Sony screwed almost anything btw…SE is not an exception. Hope that now they begin lesson learned phase and give me PS4 with android soon :-)

    • http://twitter.com/iMarky_Marc Marc Jarvis

PS4 with android means the death of the PS console as we know it. It has enough security issues. Ill go back to a Dreamcast.

  • Bringit

Except for the smart people, most people underestimated the iPhone, and continue to do so.  Look at all the Androidnerds in here.
