Privacy groups ask FTC to investigate Facebook for ‘secretly tracking users’

Legal

The American Civil Liberties Union, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and seven other privacy groups have contacted the U.S. Federal Trade Commission asking it to investigate Facebook for “secretly tracking users after they logged off of Facebook’s webpage.” A 34-page complaint filed by EPIC asks for an injunction, investigation and “other relief” from the social network. EPIC said Facebook is home to more than 60 billion photographs and alleges it developed its “tag suggestions” feature to collect data on Facebook users “without knowledge of consent in order to develop facial recognition technology.” The complaint specifically states:

Given these extraordinary circumstances, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, The Center for Digital Democracy, Consumer Watchdog, and the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, urge the Commission to investigate Facebook, determine the extent of the harm to consumer privacy and safety, require Facebook to cease collection and use of users’ biometric data without their affirmative opt-in consent, require Facebook to give users meaningful control over their personal information, establish appropriate security safeguards, limit the disclosure of user information to third parties, and seek appropriate injunctive and compensatory relief.

EPIC’s letter also details how the social network violates its own terms of service and shows how hard it is for a user who has been tagged in a photo to delete the original image which, in most cases, is owned by somebody else. EPIC wants Facebook to create a detailed privacy program and to immediately suspend its face-tagging feature.

I agree with your correlation to an extent. But DROID users typically don’t use facebook because they have no friends.

      • Anonymous

Facebook is ruining the word “friend” and blending it with acquaintance. They are 2 different things. Hence 2 entries in a dictionary…

Joining  facebook  is not bad. People  shud read terms  and condition or comments of  any social site before  they sign up. FB has been a secret disclosure for  yrs and why will smone who want to hide secret need  to sign up. I cancel  mine  coz they expose  me alot. I was  having 4-5 GF and people  start to post nonsense on my wall untill all my GF got to know each other and  4 of  them  has just  ran away.
In that case i choose to cancel my profile.

When they go out of business, someone is going to buy their assets and that’s going to include all the data that users put in there, and whatever joke privacy policy that was in place is not going to exist. They keep everything, nothing is deleted. Have fun with that.

The CIA-FBI owns Facebook since the famous lawsuit between the creators….

  • Security Conscious

For years, the Internet has been known as a wild and wooly place, and it didn’t take long for corporations to find out that it’s a haven for private data mining. FB is in the same game as all the rest. So, consumers must be aware of all the risks involved when they open an account with any of them, particularly FB and the new Google +. When I started playing WWF, I opened and account in FB, but it’s under a handle, not my real name. Also my tag pic is a fake, and all the info I have in there is false. It’s mind boggling to see some of the private info people display in there, like pics of their whole family, where the went to school, where they work, the home where they live and where it’s located. It’s like, wtf are they thinking. I feel really sorry for them.

I don’t know who to trust less… Google or facebook?

    • Anonymous

      Facebook.

    • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

Google. They keep track of everything you visit and search for. Facebook you have to put it up yourself.

  • Anonymous

I just think that it is odd that people who signed up for and participate in a website that is supposed to keep track of everything you do, would find it offensive that the website is doing what it says it is supposed to do.  If you don’t want to be tracked at all, then give up the internet, your cellphone, and don’t purchase anything unless it is with cash.  Our country is turning into a police state, so what does it matter if you have a Facebook account anyway?  If you have an email account or a job, you are being tracked in some way or another and your information is being sold to business and companies all the time.

Facebook is causing to leak personal information about the user.. They must limit the option to publicize any information coming from the user..

  • http://www.onlinemoviesshow.com Movie Show Times

This issue is emerging with face book now a days so it must be finalized by proper and strict investigation so that users can be avoided from more leakage of their personal information.
