Chrome, Firefox and Safari browsers chewing away at IE market share

Software

A new research report from Chitika Insights suggests Chrome, Firefox and Safari are eating away at Microsoft’s dominant share of the web browser market. Internet Explorer’s overall share dropped from 56% in July to 54% in August while Firefox’s market share increased from 19% to 20% and Safari’s share grew one point to 9%. Between July 2010 and July 2011, however, Microsoft’s browser share remained steady at 56%. Google’s Chrome web browser saw its share increase from 9% to 16% year-over-year at the expense of Firefox and Safari, which lost 5% and 1% of the market, respectively. Chitika said it expects Firefox’s share to increase as Mozilla continues to release frequent updates to its web browser. In addition, Internet Explorer’s share will “stabilize from its recent losses” when Microsoft releases Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10.

Agree 100% but your avatar sucks, I hate it.

Yeah I’ve been told that my avatar angers people but I don’t care. I guess it’s like when people tell you your user name represents a scrub basketball team that can’t win it all and Lebron james got no rings.

I agree 100%. The heat suck.

The problem with IE is that there is no extensibility with it

I think IE only has that much of a chunk still because of all the older people with a computer and not savvy enough to download another browser

My brain hurts as I cannot comprehend why someone would choose an inferior web browser over Chrome. I mean, there are the ignorant people who don’t know better and roll with IE, but everyone else…

Coz u have gone insane believing in chrome.

      Ie10 beats chrome outright.

More than half the world loves ie coz its the most user friendly

Google Chrome is fast and all, but I can’t come to like it. I use IE9 and rockmelt (yes that’s technically chrome). Not everyone likes the same things.

    • Anonymous

I use chrome at work and sometimes on my laptop and I can say its no better than IE.. it crashes on flash just like ie.. sometimes even worse, it has almost the same limitations and problems as ie..Could you give me a single reason why chrome is better than IE?.. just one

You’re probably one of many morons that thinks android is better than iOS because it has more market share. It’s time you people got your lips off of Larry and sergey’s pole.

I’ll agree with you on Firefox, pretty good browser, but Chrome beats Safari on every aspect and its too bad… you could do better

      • Anonymous

Yeah well I don’t use anything from Google, besides at times I enjoy the full sreen mode Safari offers in OS X Lion

I use IE9 almost exclusively and even on my windows phone :) google chrome is there too if IE9 ever decides to stop working right for me.

  • Mesol Turner

I’m sure half of people who buy computers now don’t even know that there are other options..

Honestly, why is safari’s so high?  On Mac I would still use Chrome over Safari on it.

Only time I would use Safari would be for touchscreen all-in-ones where it supports touch scrolling.

    Also IE, die already :|

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

They may be counting Mobile Safari

    • Anonymous

Same reason why IE is so high, most people use the default browser and that is it.

Me personally I use FireFox & Chrome. Best 2 browsers imo…

And yes, IE9 is junk. and IE10 doesn’t sound very impressive either. They really should just spend their resources on other things.

Safari is gaining back because Chrome, although faster, doesn’t support new gestures in Lion.
I like Chrome and was using it on my mac even though I had nothing against Safari. I switched back to Safari because of the gestures. ( I love the magic TrackPad )

MS should make IE9/10 available to Mac users. A lot people switching from pc to Mac would have something familiar to use and increase IE user base. It’s not just the young generation using macs. Walk into an Apple store and look at the one to one area, it populated mostly by older people who have ditched their PC.

I actually like IE9. IMO, MS has been doing some of their best work over the last few years. Windows 7 is a very rock solid OS.  IE9 is better than any older version of IE.
Windows phone 7 Mango is Very good. I downloaded Windows 8 and thought it was cool.  I loved the address bar being at the bottom. Nice change.

Although Microsoft’s products have drastically improved, they’re still crap.  The fact that IE 9 still doesn’t support many HTML 5 and CSS 3 elements that everyone supports greatly reduces my desire to even code for it.

And if anyone says oh well you’re not a good web developer if you ignore IE.” Well I want to support the newer, better code of tomorrow, do you know how awful it is to still have to consider IE 6 and IE 7 when doing high end business sites in modern designs.

IE9 mobile on my windows phone 7 is in no way crap other than the lack of flash, which I don’t miss out on much with no flash. And wp7 is in no way crap either. It may not work for you, but it is not crap. If anything was crap it was my old Motorola atrix and my brothers Samsung captivate (not because of android but because of hardware failures such as speakers, WiFi radio, and camera flash on the atrix.

Actually, I do. It’s a huge pain. But you have to do it. And you have to do Firefox. And it’s getting to the point where you have to do Chrome/Safari, which luckily, since they use similar rendering engines, can mostly be lumped together.  But this is why there are standards.

The problem is corporate installs. IE can be secured via group policy ins a pretty granular manner. None of the rest can be. So IE will always have an advantage in the corporate space, because admins can remotely control the security to try and keep users from clicking on every fake anti-virus popup they see.

Guys let us not quarrel. I thinking we can all agree that everything is better the that Safari POS :p

  • Justin Lisenby

    Death to IE!!!

  • Anonymous

i cant use chrome @ my job 5computer x400 stores all with ie will give u market shares lol

  • Anonymous

People actually use safari? IE9 is better than safari.

  • Anonymous

This is all bgr talk about? “marketshare”?

  • Chut Pata

The fact that IE still holds 56% market shows how technically obsolete corporate executives are, who decide on a standard and do not change it until it breaks down.  If corporations allow people to use whatever browser their employee wants, then IE would be used only in retirement homes and at the office of corporate executives.
