Google Nexus Prime, Ice Cream Sandwich likely stars of Samsung’s October 11th press event

mobile

Samsung recently sent out press invites to an event on October 11th during which Google’s next Android iteration, Ice Cream Sandwich, and the Nexus Prime are expected to be unveiled. Samsung’s invite is titled “Google Episode” and it promises “a look at what’s new from Android.” We reported exclusively in June that the Nexus Prime is manufactured by Samsung, much like the Nexus S was, and we expect it will be packed with high-end hardware. Our sources said the device will likely be powered by a OMAP4460 processor, will be equipped with a large 720p display 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel camera with advanced low-light performance and a 4G LTE radio. Reportedly, Google has been working with multiple carriers on the device and early rumors suggested it will hit the market this month, too. BGR will be reporting live from the Samsung event, so tune in for all the news as it breaks on October 11th.

720p on a phone. Nuts. Then again, some of the new android phone are so huge, maybe that isn’t so impressive anymore

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

The largest phone currently is I beleve 4.3 or 4.5 inches. The new Nexus device is rumored to have a 4.65″ screen which even if you look at an EVO 4G is only 0.35″ bigger and that isn’t much of a difference.

I’m also going to go out on a limb here, I don’t believe the Verizon Nexus phone will be called the Prime. I think it will be named the Galaxy Nexus, and when the phone reaches other carriers it will be called the Nexus Prime.

Apple fanboys should keep an eye on this press event, it will likely feature things you will be getting in iOS 6.

4.52″ on one of the SGS II variants is the largest… unless you count that Dell 5″ phone.

        But nobody does.

      • http://www.jeffkibuule.com Jeff Kibuule

The HTC Titan is 4.7″. The Samsung Galaxy Note (if you can really call it a phone because it’s so comically large) is 5.3″.

By your logic, a Toyota must be better than a Farrari as Toyota manages to sell more cars.

a Toyota probably lasts longer than a Ferrari

You’re crazy.  It already has affected the iphone sales in a huge way.  Will iphones drop in sales?  Obviously not.  But it hasn’t grown by percentage in a long while and neither Verizon adding iphone nor Sprint will change that.

If you don’t think Android has something to do with the flat iphone percentage you need to reboot.

i think apple just kinda took the drop down notifications from android for ios 5? And they added cool voice search after android introduced voice search in their os? They kinda keep having to add additional features that android handsets have had. if im not mistaken.
ios 6 will probably have the features ice cream sandwich will introduce or maybe just 4G

I have a hard time believing Verizon will allow a pure/stock Android phone on their network (with exception of the original Motorola Droid?). I still think they’ll release a bastardized version called the Droid Prime loaded up with their custom bloatware and restrict the ease of upgrading to the latest OS.

…I’d love to be proven wrong, though!

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Verizon has no say in what a manufacturer uses in terms of their UI, Verizon’s only say in what goes on a device is the bloatware. All Nexus devices are considered Google devices that give you the Google Experience. There isn’t a single Nexus device that has a custom UI.

      • http://profiles.google.com/desmet2006 Alex Fischer

@twitter-133878082:disqus while it’s true that Verizon has no say on a nexus device, Sprint disabled the tethering on the Nexus S 4g until you bought a tethering plan, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Verizon pull that crap.  However, the nexus phones are a fastboot oem unlock away from doing whatever the hell you want.

      • Anonymous

Totally agree but for me 4.3″ screen in the total MAX, but I prefer 4″ screen as you can then use the keyboard one handed, I dont know what the obsession with these bigger & bigger phone screen, there are hardly any 4″ screens on new flagship phones so there is less choice not more.

      • http://profiles.google.com/desmet2006 Alex Fischer

I think the important thing is that even though the phone has a rumored 4.65 inch screen….there’s no hardware buttons (again rumored) so you could still have a phone that’s quite small, while having a larger screen.

    • Anonymous

Have to account for the virtual navigation buttons and a smaller bezel.  Screen isn’t as monstrous as it seems.

      • Anonymous

True. Good point. I stand corrected.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.a.yager Joseph A. Yager

I’m wondering now if they won’t use the new Exynos 4212 1.5 GHz dual core processor?

    • Anonymous

Rumor has it that they will…

    • http://www.jeffkibuule.com Jeff Kibuule

If anything, this phone will be out by the end of the month. The Exynos 4212 may be announced today but chances are production levels won’t ramp up in time. I am thinking that the Galaxy S III will be on a 28nm node, so it’s possible that Exynos could be used…

      • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.a.yager Joseph A. Yager

I was thinking the same thing – though it’s amazing sometimes how these companies are able to push something out quickly.  And it’s possible they were readying the new chip for the nexus – of course this is all just wishful thinking on my part!

      • Tigerz0202

The entire Android OS is a modified iOS…………whats your point? Sharing is Caring lol

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

How is Android modified iOS? I’d like to see something to back that up. I am pretty sure Apple would have sued Android if they forked iOS.

      • Anonymous

That’s funny. How so? I guess iOS is returning to its roots by copying a bunch of Android functionality for iOS 5?

      • Wirelessmodz

        Get out dipshit

      • Anonymous

You do realize Android copied that from WebOS and just reversed it? Google could always stop PNS altogether since it was an Apple invention. It’s funny. The whole idea behind PNS was to save battery life but battery life sucks on Android because they always have unnecessary background tasks running.

You also do realize that voice control existed on phones before Android.

Some of you fanboys seem to think the world didn’t exist before 2008.

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Apple didn’t invent PNS, my Palm 650 had push notifications and I had that thing LOOOOONG before iOS or Android existed.

As for running background programs, 90% of those programs are dormant in memory so they launch faster. Them being dormant has no effect on battery life at all. You have clearly never owned an Android device. I have easily got 1 day+ out of every Android device I have owned.

How about instead of you spouting off ignorant claims that you have no knowledge over you educate yourself?

      • Anonymous

poor battery life? There are tons of Android phones out there so of course some manufacturers are going to make phones that dont fair so well but that has nothing to do with Android. My Infuse has great battery life and Im a heavy phone user. Get your head out of your ass before you speak so your not just talking shit.

      • Anonymous

@jroc869  You just made a fool of yourself. Go do a google search for “android infuse battery review” and go checkout the androidforums thread where they rip apart the Infuse’s battery life.

Maybe you should have more experience other than with a phone you owned and have a bias for.

        @Grizzly Atoms

        >Them being dormant has no effect on battery life at all.

This is absolutely stupid. If that were the case task killers wouldn’t be one of the most popular apps on the Android store.

        >You have clearly never owned an Android device. I have easily got 1 day+ out of every Android device I have owned.

Again, another absurdity. Sergey Brin himself has fielded questions about problems with Android’s battery life a year ago. There is no Android phone out there (especially 4G) that has come close to be the equal of any iPhone or Blackberry.

        >How about instead of you spouting off ignorant claims that you have no knowledge over you educate yourself?

Was that supposed to be a coherent sentence? Between the two of us, it doesn’t seem like I need an education.

      • Anonymous

Task killers are downloaded, because nitwits like you think they actually do something. Fyi… they don’t. Skinny arms is right about how Android manages apps.

      • Anonymous

Yes the stuff I have been doing with jailbreak for years now. Next. See I can be a douche as well. I can be a bigger douche by saying I had a iPhone before any android phones were thought of. But I won’t.

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Only a moron would buy a smartphone that runs on EDGE.

Any if you want to talk about jailbreaking, then we can talk rooting too. I can do a lot more with my phone rooted than you could ever do with your phone jailbroken.

      • Anonymous

Come off it, you must of been all of 11 when the first iphone came out.

      • Anonymous

Jailbreaking doesn’t even compare to rooting. I can do alot more off of my rooted Htc Evo than you can off of your jailbroken iphone. Don’t get me started!!

      • Anonymous

lmfao …. Pretty sure that wasn’t made by Apple… I’m talking about a “Native” Solution that they stole.

    • MichaelT

I think you mean come see what Apple will copy for your next iPhone. I hear the iPhone will be getting a drop down Notification bar. Now, where have I seen that before? Android. It’s also going to get OTA updates, and the ability to be activated without having to connect to a computer, just like all Androids since the first one came out a few years ago. Oh, it will also have widgets? Now, where could they have gotten that idea? Oh yeah, Android.

So, yeah, who’s copying who again?

      • Zac Caslin

And those are all androids only features?

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

The only features that Apple is jacking this year. I don’t think Apple is doing widgets though.

And this next iphone will have to do it without Samsung internals….oh yea, maybe some didn’t know, Apple suing everyone who can contend with them…monons!!!

    • ddd

there will be pure Android, nothing else

    • Drybones5

Nexus phones = pure android.  Just like Nexus S had no Samsung software at all.

  • Turd

Is it weird to only have a 5 MP camera? Most now seem to have 8mp. Is there rumored to be a front facing camera?

    • Anonymous

Megapixels are irrelavant if the sensors and software are lacking. A 5 megapixel camera can take a better quality picture than an 8 megapixel, if it’s done right.

    • Anonymous

State of the art light senor turd.  That’s all that matters.  Optical zoom would be nice too.

    • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

Just about every new Android phone has a front facing camera now, so I would say that is a safe bet.

  • http://www.jeffkibuule.com Jeff Kibuule

Hopefully the camera will record in 720P this time.

  • Macs

I can’t understand why Samsung would use OMAP4 when they have their own superior chip with exynos.
Graphics is far superior on exynos and we are talking about a 720p display so graphics performance are really important

    • Drybones5

Maybe the development for this that started by in December wasn’t planning for the Exynos at the time?

Or maybe Samsung wants it to be exclusive to their high end Galaxy S line?

  • Datjuliusboi

Apple stole the original iPhone design from samsungs old mp3 player, so who really is the copycat.

  • Booboolala2000

If that video on you tube and the ICS running Nexus S is real, then I can’t wait. Especially if VZW gets the Nexus.

Its funny to hear iphone fanboys call android an incomplete phone os. If you want to compare the two, open your home screen on iOS and on your android phone from any of your 5+ homescreens, open your APP LAUNCHER. iOS is only a app launcher with a shitty notification system. Android even at 2.2 is light years ahead

    • Anonymous

VZW will get it first, that much is true. Hopefully it lives up to the potential.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joseph.a.yager Joseph A. Yager

that’s great that they’re “announcing” the new nexus with ice cream sandwich but when will it actually come out? i remember waiting months from the time the evo was announced till the time it was actually released. the wait was horrible.

one of the few things i like about apple is that their stuff gets sold almost immediately after it’s announced.

i really hope that the nexus and ics are ready because it’ll hopefully mean that the ics for the transformer 2 is moving along as well.

so which phone is samsung’s flagship phone? is the galaxy s2 or the prime??

great news!! really hope it isn’t a Verizon exclusive tho.

I still think it will have an 8 megapixel camera. Why make a flagship phone with an inferior camera?

      megapixels doesn’t mean picture quality.
