Apple may axe iPod shuffle and iPod classic

mobile

Apple will kill off its iPod shuffle and iPod classic lines to instead focus on the iPod touch and iPod nano, TUAW reported recently. The rumor follows early speculation by CNET, which noted just 8% of Apple’s fourth quarter 2010 revenue was from iPod sales. Typically, Apple unveils its new iPod family in the fall of each year. However, an invitation to Apple’s October 4th press conference suggests the iPhone will be the star of this year’s show. In addition, we have heard numerous reports that Apple will make minor changes to the iPod touch this year, if any at all, and will also offer a white version. We will be reporting all of the news as it breaks on October 4th.

I hope this wasn’t supposed to be a surprise. If you’re gambling big on the cloud, it doesn’t make much sense to have a product which makes the cloud pointless (Classic) or unreasonably difficult to access (Shuffle).

Besides, Apple has a long history of getting tired of things and going in new directions.

If they do so, then they will be giving away some of my money.  I still have a need for a small, cheap, simple, just-an-mp3 player for exercising or just while I’m walking around.  Unless they redesign the nano and drop the price considerably, then the Nano just doesn’t qualify.

    • Mino_mist

why would they redesign the Nano ? … its the perfect size for walking or gym training

      • somedude0123

Because people need something to complain about.

      • warrentotheg

Try because it isn’t touch screen and not all of us sit around a computer all day trying to insult people. Buttons are much needed when running or working out. Especially, If you have weight lifting gloves on.

        Without bluetooth = failed
I have Motorola S10 headset, In a gym once you go bluetooth there’s no way you’re going back to wired

If Apple kills off the iPod Classic, they better increase the storage capacity of the iPod Touch. 64GBs just isn’t enough anymore

    • somedude0123

Good lord, what are you running on there to need more than 64GB’s?

    • MacGoo

iCloud is Apple’s solution to this, not massive storage sizes. I suspect you’re not going to see any storage bump anywhere.

      • http://twitter.com/UrbanEnigma Yves

I’m not a fan of cloud computing since I’m often in areas with limited or no cellular coverage

      • MacGoo

A valid argument. As of last glance, Apple was still selling classics, so it looks like they may have dodged the bullet. But it’s just a matter of time before iCloud becomes the primary storage solution. We may even see physical on-device storage sizes go down in the future.

I agree, I’ve been waiting for them to release an iPod Touch with 128 GBs. Until then I’m sticking with my Classic 160 GB.

      • Anonymous

Same here.  I better hurry up and get a 160GB over my 30GB model ASAP.  I need as much space as possible since I drive all day and plug my iPod to my car stereo.

Problem I see with this is the touch doesn’t nearly come near the capacity of the classic. There are those of us who would rather have our entire library with us rather than picking and choosing what goes on the iPod. Sure you can say who really needs that much music, but that’s the same tired excuse that was used when iPhone didn’t have mms or copy and paste. Cloud computing is cool, but I don’t always have access to wifi or a mobile network. I think the classic still has a place, but we will see.

I was praying for a 200GB iPod classic slated for the end of the year it seems like ima have to buy that 160GB one this Christmas … Apple, you’ve let me down, I’ve never been a customer but I realize more and more the premium isnt really worth it

      • Bringit

        Good thing to pray for.

      • Carmen

        You are so contradictory.

‘I wanted a 200GB and they MIGHT not make one (if this article pans out to be the truth), so I’m gonna buy the 160GB one, but I’m REALIZING that Apple products aren’t worth the money, but I’ve never bought one’.

And somehow, some way, APPLE has ‘let down’ this non-customer.

Go ahead, go get the BIGGER mp3 player from that other company that makes one….you know…umm…that other company that makes mp3 players still.  Ummmm, what is their name?

iPod mini + belt clip is still my favorite device

      • Carmen

Relevant.  Really relevant to the article or any comment at all that you may be replying to.

      • somedude0123

When did I say anything about an iPhone? Sounds more like you fanDroids are the rediculous ones. You mad Droid doesn’t have any mp3 players? Take it out on them not me. Douchey McDoucherton.

  • Double A

Shuffle I can understand. Classic I’m fine with them taking out, so long as there is a large storage device replacement for my car. It doesn’t even need to have a screen and can be drive based. The device will be cheap since there would be little software and no screen.

    • Carmen

      Won’t ever happen.

      • Anonymous

He’s a sheep and I’m pointing that out it doesn’t have to be relevant to the article I can say whatever I want to say. So go back to playing with your itoy before I really trash you.

  • Anonymous

I could careless about the ipod classic but I hope they don’t kill the shuffle. I need it for workouts.

  • BigMixxx

AWE NAW!  This is my bread and butter.  32 gig ain’t enough for my movies and music and my offline storage device.

  • Sebastienshaikh17

I think Apple have to keep producing the iPod nano or classic, I mean they’re symbols to the company they can’t stop producing these things. When I hear ‘Apple’ I picture this first gen iPod Nano which I have never owned, I just own a Macbook Pro and an iPhone 4. But as I said iPod Nano/classic=symbol Apple

    • Carmen

…and Motorola should make record players for people’s cars, right?  Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I travel a lot and I like to have the 17,000 song on my Classic available to me everywhere on-the-road. Bummer.

Might have to buy a shuffle for the future. I use mine when skiing and when riding my motorbike – have it clipped to my glove. The big physical buttons are a breeze to use with gloves on and it’s almost bombproof. I’ve ski’d over it, dropped it off the bike, ridden over it, had it bounce off the road at 80mph and other mishaps. It has one scratch and a dent in the centre button. Touchscreen media players are useless for this application – too fragile and don’t work with gloves on, or in extremes of temperature and/or operator clumsiness.

The shuffle is the perfect ipod for working out and other activities, might have to pick up a couple for the future.
