Windows OS share declines again in August as OS X gains [infographic]

Software

Microsoft’s Windows operating system continued its slow decent in September as Apple’s Mac OS and Google’s Android platform again showed gains. Advertising network Chitika’s research division, Chitika Insights, published an infographic on Monday outlining operating system usage share on its network in the month of September. After losing nearly three-quarters of a point last month, Windows again dipped 0.592% to land at 77.7% for the month of September. The Windows OS has now dropped a total of 1.35% since July. Apple’s OS X platform showed the biggest gains in the month, jumping 1.039% to hit double digits at 10.6%. Google’s Android OS gained marginally in September to reach 3.3%, and Apple’s iOS dipped to 5.2%, shedding 0.301% of its usage share as the world waits for the iPhone 5 to launch next month. Chitika’s full infographic follows below.

We’ll see what happens after Windows 8

You’re comparing products from Apple and Google today against what will be shipping a year from now in regards to tablets. W8 couldn’t even run on specs of current tablets.

All empires fall. In technology this occurrence happens at a much faster rate.

“We’ll see what happens after Windows 8″

Isn’t that what they said for Windows 7 ?

  • BurleyShells

Why include iOS and android with windows and Mac os?

    • Anonymous

They add them and take them out when it is convenient.

    • Anonymous

iOS falls 0.3% but Mac OS up over 1%. Clearly this shows the iPad (despite its great success) is not cannibalising Mac sales.

This doesn’t even make sense … where is symbian and webos on this graphic?  while we are at it, why not show embedded OS as well?

    • somedude0123

They are on the graphic, they are just to small to see.

      “Other”

      • Ahmadamaj

If we’re talking worldwide, Symbian is not “other”.

Suckers want to jump on the OSX bandwagon.. let them do it. They will regret it later.

    • IPwn

Since windows has higher market share they would be considered the bandwagon FYI

Been a Mac User since ’84 (were you born yet?) and an OS X user since 2001.  I’ve never regretted it yet.

How can anything be derived from sampling a single network that is not an ISP? How about sampling the ISPs to harvest their stats? This is an inaccurate sampling of users and should not be taken as anything.

Very true… Wonder if there’s not any kind of slant to the sites using Chitika ads.

        Maybe drivel?

What a pointless article.  Must be a really slow day at BGR.  Now how do I go about getting the time back that I wasted reading this drivel?

      Then. Don’t. Read. It.

  • sirpaul

Why the hell are mobile OSs in the same list as Windows and OSX?

    • Anonymous

      Why not? It’s drivel?

  • Drybones5

    1) Why are mobile OS including in Desktop OS market share?

    2) This data wasn’t even collected fairly and the place the data came from is unreliable, the report should be ignored because of it’s bad decisions on taking the data on this.

    3) As much as I think Macs are more popular now than in the past several years, I doubt it jumped a whole 1% in one month.

    4) It says in the highlights Android has been stagnant for the 3rd month in a row.  Well then where did the iOS market share go? If it wasn’t Android what happened to that 0.3%?

    5) How dumb is your god damn reporting on this site?  I hate coming here.

“Apple’s iOS dipped to 5.2%, shedding 0.301% of its usage share as the world waits for the iPhone 5 to launch next month.”

So your view on the 0.301% dip is people letting go of their iPhones in preparation of the next iPhone?  Seriously?

As a side note, I’m not a bias person. I use Windows for gaming and I’m building my own system for that, Mac for work and I am buying a personal Mac for myself to do work at home and personal computing use, overall I enjoy using Linux over both of those anyways.

And as for phones I’m considering buying a family member an iPhone 3GS although personally I’m getting my self a Galaxy S II.

What I’m trying to say is… this content, post, and this site is full of bullshit.

  • Taylor Davis

I’m tempted to go buy a WP7 just because I know its going to be great it just needs a little support.

Linux is good for servers. I like NFS. I don’t like linux for much except server, Apache too.

  • David

Apple’s share should still be an embarrassment to Herr Jobs.  Their share has been hovering around 10% for many years, yet they act like their OS is the greatest thing since microwave ovens.

    • Anonymous

I’m so embarrassed for Steve Jobs.

  • phed_up

    Holy crap!

Not much of a CrApple shill are ya?!

“..Windows OS Share declines as OS X gains…”

Really?  Windows lost just over half a point!  And OS X gained just over a point!

That is a normal adjustment between months, that fluctuation is going to happen.  Looking at the numbers, I wouldn’t say Windows lost, nor would I say OS X gained!!  There just isn’t enough movement there to be usable!

The adjustments are so small in this graph that I would just toss it completely out.  Only one full point gain in the entire graph?  Waste of time, that is all there is to it!

    • somedude0123

Yeah, it took the Titanic a while to sink as well.

    • Anonymous

No, phed_up. One percent in 3 months is a lot. At that rate, Apple could be dominant in 90 months. Problem is, I don’t believe the numbers.

  • Laxwillsch

This is the worst reporting I have seen yet and completely conflicts all of the other data I have read about recently. Specifically the fact that android is steadily growing and iOS is remaining pretty steady. Hell, android holds over twice the market share compared to iOS, so how the hell does it make sense that iOS out ranks android by almost double in this data? I lost a lot of respect for this site just now. Deleted from my rss feed!

  • https://profiles.google.com/adeel.e Adeel Ejaz

So basically when there a new version of Mac, their market share goes up but when there is a new version of Windows, doesn’t matter how much highly anticipated, their market share goes down. Got it! #idiots
