iPad and other tablets still considered toys, Citi finds

Tablets

81% of iPad owners have paid for an application compared to just 43% of those who owner other tablets, according to a recent Citigroup survey. iPad owners also download more applications, which is not surprising given the larger selection of tablet-formatted apps in the iTunes App Store. According to Citigroup, 63% of iPad owners have purchased 11 or more applications versus 37% of non-iPad owners. Tablets have yet to gain the consumers’ respect as a work device, however. 62% of the survey respondents said they planned to purchase a tablet in the next year as a “toy or gadget.” Only 18% said they would buy one for work and just 15% thought a tablet would be capable of replacing their notebook. Citigroup’s survey found that most people (67%) actually use their tablet for general web surfing most. 30% of the respondents said they used their iPad to watch movies and TV shows using Netflix, too. Citigroup’s survey was comprised of 1,800 respondents in the United States, China and the United Kingdom.

      Get six pack Abs

I’m busy and can’t spend 60 minutes a day with exercises.
Truth About Six Pack Abs does not require this.
30-45 minutes workouts 2-3 times a week should do the trick

Someone must have drawn those graphs during their boredom. Apple iPad is a number one tablet so far, with number two being far behind. And, it is number one for a layman by default. Anyone who buys any android tablet must have done some research before buying a tablet and how can 18% of them download a total number of zero app?

    • Peter

Perhaps because most “apps” are a complete waste of time, consisting mainly of trivial amusements geared at young people?  As for the higher percentage on Android, say what you want about it, but having Flash surely satisfies a number of people who might otherwise download a dedicated content portal.

Simple, if 67% of the people bought the tablet for surfing and 30% bought it for watching movies. If the tablet has both web and movie support off the bat. I don’t see most people bothering to install apps. Also, some low end tablets don’t even have access to app store because they are not Google approved.

I’m still waiting to see what iPad 3 brings to the table.

    • Tremarco

faster processor and better camera, thats about it

      • Scott Duffy

And possibly a better screen. If that happens, I’m in.

If you’re looking for pixel density like the iPhone forget it. You know how expensive that would be to make? The “retina display” which is a stupid marketing term btw, will not be on the next ipad, at least not that high of resolution

  • Bringit

Android and Blackberry tablets are considered paper weights.

    • Tremarco

a playbook can be a powerful work tablet, sales may not show it but it is truly the most productive tablet on the market. if you disagree then you havent had the pleasure of owning one. i also own an ipad

      • Anonymous

The problem is, what can you really DO with it with the lack of Apps for it.  It’s even worse off then Android is by far.

      • Applesucksfatties

I have plenty of great apps that I use.  ScoreMobile, uTrack, Poynt, Nobex radio, Slacker Radio, GroovyNotes, WeatherEye, DoodleBlast, Air Hockey, Bing Maps, Tungle, Scrapbook, Vevo, InstaPhoto, BedBuzz….. should I go on or do you get the picture?   The PlayBook hardware is awesome and the app selection isn’t as bad as the media/analysts and Apple/Android trolls make it out to be.  Should the price be slightly lower?  Yes.   Should there be more QUALITY apps available? Yes….  but it works great and definitely shouldn’t be classified as a paperweight.

      • http://www.facebook.com/applelover Tim Meesseman

I don’t need to own one. I played with one in Staples and was astounded at how difficult it was to do something as simple and return to the home screen. Yes, I figured it out eventually, but something so simple shouldn’t be AT ALL difficult to figure out. You shouldn’t have to “look” for a button – it should just be in the natural spot. I also found it to be laggy and have next to no apps available.

      • Applesucksfatties

A flick upwards was difficult to figure out?  Is breathing challenging for you too?  Truly a poor reason to dismiss the PlayBook.  There is always a learning curve with using a new device so you can’t automatically dismiss something just because it took you longer than 2 seconds to figure it out.

      • AppleDroidBerryFan

Yea, because anything that takes more than a few seconds to figure out is crap?

More options=more complexity=steeper learning curve=more power to the user.  It is a tradeoff, but BB et. al. would do well to remember how lazy and stupid people are and err on the side of simplicity.

easy, productivity of the ipad is magical,it is magical,it is magical, oooops sorry lost my train of thought…it is revolutionary

    • Applesucksfatties

Funny that you share your opinion all the time about the PlayBook….yet you haven’t once provided any tangible evidence as to why you think it sucks so bad.  It happens to be a great “paperweight”.  Browsing experience is great, it is portable, screen is awesome and the HDMI is slick.

      • Tremarco

i agree totally, i love it when you tell off the misinformed ignorant people

    • AppleDroidBerryFan

God, I’d forgotten about paper weights.  Do people still use those?  I used to have a glass one with a shell inside.  I think a tablet would be too big to be a paperweight… it would get in the way.

Oh, and don’t be a hater.

Citigroup still considered a failure if not for taxpayers bailing their asses out..

    • Anonymous

Tax payers did not bail them out, they bailed themselves out. The government does not own the US Treasury, the banks do.

    Owner a verb now?

      It’s no worse than “curate.”

  • J. Williams

Ipads are nothing but toys or media devices, this is something most of us know already.

    • Diego

You forgot to add “in my opinion”. Some of us, I guess, were to dumb to know the difference and have now worked it in to our work and school flows. I rarely touch my desktop and laptop to be honest. And no, I’m not an IT professional. There are other demanding, creative, technology related jobs out there.

      • J. Williams

No I didn’t. You make your comments, and I make mine. I respect yours and you respect mine.

      • http://twitter.com/cyberb0b Bob Autrey

I agree. A football or baseball is considered a toy unless you make your living with it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/applelover Tim Meesseman

I use mine for work every single day.

      • J. Williams

        Cool.

Lol the problem with using a tablet is that people look sooooo stupid when they do it

      • http://twitter.com/cyberb0b Bob Autrey

Stupid people look stupid doing anything. You should should understand that..

  • Peter

The only practical use I have for them is reading, when a keyboard just gets in the way.  It’s a very useful application, of course.  Typing on a tablet is a complete nightmare, if you actually know how to type.

iPads and Android tablets for now are used mainly as an entertainment devices. That would change when a tablet can run a full OS like Windows 8 or OSX. Looking forward to next year when the first Windows 8 slate should arrive the market.

    • Anonymous

OSX can hardly be considered a full OS.

      Let the flame wars begin

      • http://twitter.com/cyberb0b Bob Autrey

Awwww. Looks like no one took the bait you silly troll..

  • http://www.facebook.com/applelover Tim Meesseman

I use my iPad every single day for work. I’d be lost without it. Evernote and Omnifocus do a wonderful job of keeping me organized while on the go when a small smartphone screen just won’t do.
