AT&T CEO: ‘We’ll do very well’ with iPhone 5 even when Sprint gets it

Business

Speaking during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference on Thursday, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said he was confident that his company “would do very well” when it offers the iPhone 5, despite the influx of competition that is expected if Sprint introduces the phone. Sprint could be in contention for data-hogging customers if it does indeed offer unlimited data with the iPhone 5 and recent rumors have suggested it will. “Anytime there’s another competitor launching Apple’s hit device, the expectations for what would happen to the carrier that had it before is overblown,” Stephenson said. “The competitive dynamic will be no different than last time,” he added, referring to when Verizon Wireless began offering the iPhone 4 this past February. Stephenson argued that AT&T’s iPhone can roam globally and that it offers a faster 3G network than Verizon Wireless and Sprint.

nooo there is no iPhone 5 they stopped production due to massive demand and it being the most sold smartphone ever

didn’t he say that with Verizon getting the iPhone?

    • BurleyShells

And they continued to gain millions of iPhone subs

Boy, Boy Genius Report has the worse titles. Never does he say that Sprint is getting the iPhone. Non of the title is a quote other than the first 2 words.

Either BGR is a bunch of fanboys or they just want page clicks.

    Maybe both?

Major douche chill every time I see a picture of this guy.

I feel the same way. The guy looks like a kid toucher

    • AppleDroidBerryFan

He looks exactly like Andy Bernard from The Office (if he had spent WAY too much time in the sun).

  • Duck Tales LOL

So he is touting AT&T’s 3G network.. I’m not sure he realizes 3G is getting old.. no one really cares about it anymore.

What’s next.. is he going to praise AT&T’s 2G service as well?

    • http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/ BoyRetardedReport

No actually 3G is still superior to 4G because 3G doesn’t suck your battery at the rate 4G phones do. I really don’t mind if my webpage takes 5 – 10 seconds faster to load, if my battery lasts the entire day that is all that really matters

      • Guest

No way is 3G superior to 4G. Better batteries are becoming available everyday.

      • AppleDroidBerryFan

Are you sure?  Battery tech lags WAY behind other mobile tech.  Hence Microsoft’s goal of supporting ARM with W8.

        Ahhh….Plug it in….
        That ‘s The No~Brainer………
        & 4G isn’t Just About Speed…..
it Has Some other Benefits, Like The Overall Efficacy & Stability of The 4G Spectrum….

3G is getting old????  Hell, AT&T hasn’t even finished BUILDING their 3G network yet!    Or their EDGE network for that matter.    Or their HSPA+ network.    Or their 4G/LTE network.   (insert next big thing technology here going forward)

Its a no brainer at&t getting the iphone5 you fool must be waiting for jobs to blast in yall mouth. Now how in the world at&t is going to be ok even when sprint (IF) getting the iphone5… it wouldnt hurt sprint they making money off the new blackberry lineup & the new galaxy s2

    • Trendkiller

I hope Sprint gets the iphone. They can offload all the whiney customers whom are data hogs and bitch about their bill and want everything for free. Champagne taste and beer budget; enjoy Sprints epic 3G service.

    • Michael Scrip

Sprint hasn’t made money in years…. losing close to a billion dollars every quarter…

    • AppleDroidBerryFan

African American Vernacular English?  Not that there is anything wrong “wit dat.”

      • J. Williams

        Stick to the topic.

  • Roflmao

This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. The main reason Verizon iPhone didn’t go off the roof was because everyone was expecting a newer iPhone in June/July. Not many wanted to be locked into an iPhone 4 for 2 years when a new one was supposed to come out in just a few months after its release.

But if the iPhone 5 is indeed a world phone, then you can bet that many will leave this miserable piece of garbage company you call AT&T. As for me… I cannot wait to get my unlimited data on Sprint iPhone 5 and gtf out of AT&T. Such a hopeless company.

The main reason why sprint loss money was because they never had the iphone…. that is the MAIN reason why they loss customer and to be honest, sprint has the best wireless plans. Verizons coverage is a little better, but I didnt really see it as a deal breaker. People want the best phones and based on sales and public interest, its clearly the iphone

    • AppleDroidBerryFan

They have good wireless plans NOW.  But anyone who used them in the early 2000′s knows that they were awful.  There customer support was a total joke, and many of us swore to never go back.  VZW had more customers than ATT both with and without the iPhone.

Here is what NO ONE is saying…. how long has the iphone been available to people in the US outside of AT&T? Oh… thats right about 7 months… you NEED to consider how many people are still in contract with an iPhone4 or 3GS that is stuck on AT&T.

Most people I know would have switched to Verizon or Sprint as soon as available, but the average consumer isn’t going to pay a termination fee that is outrageous, nor does the average consumer buy their phones outright. Most people also don’t try and hock their phones on craigslist to lessen the blow.

Most people WILL wait out their contract length and then make a decision.

All this BS reporting on “Effects” of other carriers is half baked and completely useless.  You won’t be able to get any sort of ACTUAL impact until the carriers have had them for a full contract cycle (~2 years) together.

I love idiot reporting, at least it isn’t just BGR — throw Engadget and Gizmodo into the pit too.

  • J. Williams

Att is not faster than Sprint or Verizon. I have had all three at one point. T-Mobile is faster than Att by a long shot too. Lies, all lies.

      JW….
      You Absolutely Correct…..
Att is So Lame @ Multiple Levels, Besides The Speed Issue……
& of Course, The Major Issue With Att is”Dropped Calls….By The Billions…..
All Three Carriers, Will Launch The iPHone 5 in Approximately The Same Time Frame…E.

    • Dwayne Williams

AT&T has a faster 3G network than both Sprint and Verizon.

  • http://twitter.com/ggore Glenn Gore

AT&T will NOT be doing well on my dime if Sprint gets the iPhone, because, after waiting 22 years for AT&T to build a cell site that covers my town to no avail, the instant Sprint gets the iPhone I will be cancelling my AT&T service and switching to Sprint, who HAS built sites that cover this place.   Sayonara, AT&T!!!!

Randell Stephenson then ended his speech with a rousing ”Sieg Heil” and promised not to invade Russia.

  • Anonymous

That’s actually quite true. Remember when they have exclusive first rights to Iphone they sold millions. and 4 Iphones model later on Verizon Wireless got it but their sales wasn’t too high. Don’t remember the number but Verizon Wireless iphone sales was less than AT&T according to reports
