RIM reportedly slows PlayBook production

Tablets

Research In Motion is reportedly slowing production of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet following its second-quarter earnings report, during which the vendor stated that only 200,000 PlayBooks were sold into sales channels in the quarter. RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie confirmed on the company’s earning call that the PlayBook would begin to see price reductions, and the beginnings of RIM’s effort to push PlayBooks off store shelves can likely be seen in an employee-only sale at Rogers. According to a new report, however, RIM isn’t overly optimistic that its efforts with the PlayBook will pay off. Read on for more.

Industry watcher DigiTimes on Wednesday reports that RIM’s manufacturing partner Quanta has cut back its PlayBook production lines in light of decreased orders. Moreover, RIM seemingly has no intention of reviving heavier production in the immediate future, as Quanta is said to be laying off as many as 1,000 workers from its PlayBook lines. Quanta confirmed that layoffs are underway according to the report, but would not comment on whether or not the workforce reduction is tied to RIM or the PlayBook.

RIM had placed orders for between 4 million and 5 million BlackBerry PlayBook tablets back in April of this year according to DigiTimes, but the Waterloo, Ontario-based vendor has shipped fewer than 800,000 units at this point. The report also says orders have dipped substantially to just 100,000 units per month in the third quarter. Quanta will reportedly pay severances averaging $3,420 per worker dismissed from its PlayBook production lines.

Why would rim even get into the tablet market. Who’s running this company ..I just don’t get it..

    • Anonymous

Because it is considered foolish to box yourself into a corner in the business world.  Plus they have QNX, which is the best tablet OS and UI out there.   They just need to get the Android app player out, which I can’t believe they have let it slip this far.

      • Anonymous

How can it be the “best” tablet OS, when they’ve ONLY shipped 700,000 PlayBooks (worldwide)?? Reportedly, RIM has only sold between 25%-30% of ALL PlayBook’s shipped to vendors. Plus, WebOS (before its demise), was considered the top OS after iOS. Especially since RIM copied a lot of Palm/WebOS’s functions & card multi-tasking onto the QNX architecture. FAIL!

      • Applesucksfatties

        Dude.. you are an idiot.

      • Sosa

I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s the “best” however it is “very” good. I have the PB and I enjoy it very much. Most of the perception of the PB is wrong and a lot of it is based on people’s love for apple. IOS, WebOS, Android, and Windows are all good OS. However the “perception” in the publics mind is that apple rules in this department which while “very” simply isn’t true.

lol SBMobile with another brilliant analysis of RIM.  Your thought process is so flawed its hilarious, as usual.  Stating something cannot be the best because they shipped less makes no sense.  Are Ferrari’s shittier than Civics because they ship less ?  I know its not an exact comparison, but, the general point remains.

SBMobile, its one thing to be dedicated to posting on these sites, its another and more embarassing thing to be dedicated to posting on these sites when you don’t know wtf you are talking about

Still can’t believe it I just got a 827.89 iP ad2 for only 103.37 and my mom got a 1499.99 HTV for only 251.92, they are both coming tomorrow bu US PS. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HTV to my boss for 600 that I only paid 78.24 for. I use jmb.tw/52bf

What exactly is it that you love about your PlayBook?

      • Applesucksfatties

Have you even used a PlayBook?  I own an PlayBook and I’ve used an iPad…    Aside from the missing native apps (which people keep bitching about event though it has been announced that they are coming with OS 2.0) and BB App World not having as large of a selection of apps (one could argue that the majority of apps in iTunes are crap anyways), I saw no difference in functionality.    Does the OS need some refinement?  Yes..   but overall, my PlayBook is more portable than an iPad (if I wanted a 10 inch screen, I’d tote around my laptop and get a full PC experience) and QNX is more robust than iOS.

LOL you remind me of the Iraqi information minister Muhammed Saeed al-Sahhaf. He claimed the Iraqis were winning the 2003 gulf war and even when the US army was a few miles outside bagdad he claimed they were being driven into the sea lol. I admire your dedication in going down with the ship.

      • Zukidrvr

I love my PlayBook. It really comes to life when you connect it to your home theater system with an HDMI cable. I take it everywhere.

The problem isn’t the device. The problem is the lack of powerful marketing and PR. They also lacked the iron fist that Apple uses on stores to make sure that all demo devices are set up, configured correctly and actually running. If the customer can’t see it working, they won’t buy it… and they haven’t.

      • Applesucksfatties

@PAPlNYC:disqus  – I never said RIM was winning or anywhere near the top.  Years ago, yes… now, no.   And I’m not naive to RIM problems… I just think that RIMs products are getting PERCEIVED incorrectly by the market (and unfairly bashed by iBGR and other members of the media… which is also driving consumer PERCEPTION).

      • Anonymous

The PB is as good as the iPad, except for the parts where it is not as good as the iPad.  It has the same price, but a smaller screen.  Hence you should buy a PB instead of an iPad.

Anyone else see the logic fail?  It seems most customers are not stupid enough to fall for that.

So AppleSux- tell us how you can project the Non-3G FailBook onto a screen to make a presentation?  Oh wait, it will need to be ‘bridged’ to your phone, or on WiFi to get web access too.

      • Applesucksfatties

@1f7409e1fe023a8eb6678c9387752cdf:disqus  ever heard of an HDMI cable and Documents to Go?  Download the presentation vua bridge or wifi, connect it to the projector and viola.

According to RIM though Amateur hour is over???

    • Anonymous

Haha the irony. It will never be officially over. RIM will never admit defeat and announce like HP that they are killing the playbook. No, they will continue to piss money into a “tablet market” that doesn’t exist. There is only an iPad market. But make no mistake, the playbook is DEAD. Amateur hour IS over.

      • Applesucksfatties

Sure buddy…   and it isn’t an iPad market…it is a Apple cult of dullards lulled by the PERCEPTION that Apple is cool, great, and innovative.  That being said, the average consumer doesn’t know their a$$ from a hole in the ground either.

      • RIM-Jobbers are Whiners

Blame that on RIM’s inability to properly market their products to the masses. That’s Apple’s biggest success. And the fact that their products actually function the way they are supposed to.

Maybe Apple will build a bridge to the iPad?  Oh wait, the iPad has a 3G radio, they don’t need a bridge.

@1f7409e1fe023a8eb6678c9387752cdf:disqus goood for you and good for Apple.   Part of me wants to RIM to go under just so I don’t have to see your dumb ass posts on RIM articles anymore..    Which I still don’t understand why you are out here if you hate RIM so much.  I hate the Yankees but I’m not out spouting off on Yankee blogs…

ps.  Yeah..Apple shouldn’t do something smart like create a bridge function.  Most people WANT to pay for two data plans for their devices…

      • The Thrasher

AppleSux- Wow, for someone making 95K+/yr, you sure are stupid.  Have you ever heard of a WiFi Tether?  Or Hotspot?  Why would we need to ‘bridge’ our device?  That means I need a BB Phone and a BB Non-3G FailBook.  What if I have an Android device?

        RIM just plain SUCKS!

      • Applesucksfatties

@1f7409e1fe023a8eb6678c9387752cdf:disqus yeah…because you get free hotspot with your iPhone right?  I distinctly remember reading an article about AT&T busting iPhone users that didn’t have tether activated but were using the feature.   And you calling me a moron is hilarious….especially coming from the guy whose spelling is worse than a grade school kid.

Don’t need an email app, I bridge with my BlackBerry…..   plus, it is coming with OS 2.0.

Why is a bridge necessary? Every other tablet has an option for a 3G/4G radio.

      • Applesucksfatties

@07f4c1693ae7eb9eab9d817a1d64805a:disqus – so a wifi only iPad has a 3G/4G radio?  In case you haven’t heard, the 3G/4G PlayBooks will be released in the next couple months.  I feel like I’m surrounded by idiots on this site.

      • The Thrasher

Oh a couple months to FINALLY get a 3G radio?  Wow, talk about a fast response time to Apple’s iPad1 released 18 months ago.  So quick to respond RIM, good job!!

If you want to compete, you need competitive similar products, not sub-standard.  The BB FailBook is sub-standard.  Name another current tablet that does not have the 3G Option?

      • Applesucksfatties

@1f7409e1fe023a8eb6678c9387752cdf:disqus – frankly, I don’t really care as I would have opted for the wifi version anyway.   Why pay for a data plan on two devices (hence the BlackBerry bridge functionality).

Scroat is right. You don’t think Apple would build a keyboard? They have already considered it, but the public DOESN’T WANT A KEYBOARD!! That’s what you don’t understand Applesux.. We don’t need one! Good job on keyboard research RIM.. again FAIL!!

      • Applesucksfatties

Yeah moron… nobody buys keyboards.  Why don’t you tell that to all of the people in the entire WORLD that have purchased a Bold 9900 or Bold 9930 in the past 2-3 month.  Man, you are a f*cking idiot..    you just need to go away!!

      • The Thrasher

How can I go away?  With morons like yourself running their mouth’s around here.  Keyboards were the thing, 4 years ago!  RIM has yet to release a product that can compete with the iPhone 1st gen!  That was 4+ years ago!  Right on RIM, your so quick to respond!

      • Applesucksfatties

@1f7409e1fe023a8eb6678c9387752cdf:disqus – so keyboards were the thing 4 years ago… yet I believe I saw an iPhone prototype (here on iBGR) last year that had a slide out keyboard.. hmmm..     If they were so 4 years ago, why was Apple looking a possibly creating an iPhone with a keyboard?   And your Scroatesque rant about nobody wanting keyboards is just plain moronic.  Bold 9900s/9930s are selling well (even when the largest carrier in the US hasn’t released the 9900)..    Other manufacturers are also releasing phones with keyboards….    I’m going to start calling you SB Mobile..

ps.  So are you the self appointed iBGR blog troll?

      • The Thrasher

AppleSux- I understand clearly now that reading is something you do poorly.  Again, if the market wanted Apple to produce a device with a physical keyboard, they would offer this.  It’s pretty obvious people don’t want a physical keyboard attached to their iPhones.  Surely someone making 95k+/yr has enough business sense to understand this.

      • Applesucksfatties

@fef3651a686e4861e21b8b58e9124256:disqus - maybe people don’t want an iPhone with a keyboard….but my point was that there is a market for phones with keyboards.  It may not be as a big of market as the pure touch slab market is….but there is still a market.

ps.   You saying I have a reading problem is like an alcoholic telling someone that they drink too much…..

  • Bobdonhim

I beta tested the PlayBook starting 8 months before it was released.  Internally we pushed our concerns to the beta folks about lack of features/functionality but they fell on deaf ears just like every other device they release.  It’s a shame because there are a lot of smart people working at RIM but the higher ups just don’t listen.

Even today, OS7 is suppose to be focusing on the user experience…they arent even trying to catch up in the app game which is what will lead to the demise of RIM.

  • Anonymous

Price reductions… I wonder WHAT RIM will do for us early adopters – for betatesting their product… The only fair thing to do would be to give us the same rebates as gift-cards in AppWorld…. RIM – are you listening?

    • RIM-Jobbers are Whiners

Gift cards for App World? How in God’s name will you use that gift card in a store that has no quality apps?

      SMH!

      • Applesucksfatties

Have you been in BB App World?  There are more than enough quality apps?  Evernote, Poynt, Tungle.Me, Score Mobile, GroovyNotes, uTrack, DoodleBlast, Scrapbook, Vevo, … to name a few.

      • The Thrasher

BB App World might have a few select cool apps, but a far cry from Android or Apple’s App Store.  On top of that, you don’t see top notch developers building apps for BB.  They stick to Android and iOS.  AppleSux knows the reason why, RIM is a complete pain in the ass to develop for.  Enough said!

      • Applesucksfatties

@1f7409e1fe023a8eb6678c9387752cdf:disqus  – never said they weren’t…. but they have some really good apps.   Are there some apps that Apple/Android have that BB App World doesn’t? Certainly…but it isn’t like the PlayBook ONLY has internet functionality and nothing else.  I happen to use most of the apps that I listed above daily…. and developers are slowly rolling out great apps for the PlayBook.   If RIM drops the price and sells more, I think developers will be more willing to jump on board the PlayBook train.

      • The Thrasher

AppleSux, don’t kid yourself dude.  The BB App World was late to the party.  They have been TRYING to plat catch-up for two years.  All they seem to do is fall further and further behind.  There’s a reason why the Apple App Store is #1.  They just to it better, and it’s easier.

Your Non-3G FailBook does not have the clout to bring developers on board.  It was dead a week after they released it.  RIM made EPIC mistakes when they released the NON-3G FailBook.  Do you really think V2.0 is going to solve this?  Too little, too late.  Typical RIM, always the last to the party.

Amazing that iBGR can’t even go 3 days without publishing some bullshit article about RIM.   Yes, RIM probably is ramping down PlayBook sales.  Do you really have to write an article to tell us that?   However, in usual iBGR fashion, they only give part of the story.  Are they are slowing production of ALL PlayBooks or just the WiFi version to start ramping up production of the 4G version?

    • Applesucksfattiessucksfatties

Oh hai, troll. Nice to see you again.

      • Applesucksfatties

        Hai?

      • Mr Man

“Orders have dipped substantially to just 100,000 units per month in the third quarter”… are you going to simply ignore the enormous fact that, regardless of what you think about the product, people don’t want it?

Apple is producing and selling more wifi ipads than 3G because that’s the bulk of the demand.  So if RIM is truly ramping down wifi only versions to ramp up 4G versions at a time when 4G is years from being mainstream, then my god, they are more incompetent that anyone could have imagined.

    • The Thrasher

Dumb ass AppleSux. The reason they’re slowing down production is crappy sales. No one wants a FailBook. No 3G, No Email.. Screw that pile of crap.

      • Mr Man

Thrasher, while i do think RIM screwed the pooch on not having native “table-stakes” applications, the hardware and OS are top notch.

However, management’s decision to kick out a half baked tablet that was functionally tied to industry lagging phones, from a mass consumer perspective, was the nail in the coffin. RIM inability to breed reasonable logic into its execution is a direct reflection on management.  RIM could do better, but they are being lead by incompetent imbaciles who have unfortunately put RIM so far behind the eight ball that by the time they “catch up” nobody will care. Not the mass consumer market, not the investor community.

I personally think their last saving grace is to be absorbed and rebranded to wash away the overwhelming stinch of sheer and utter incompentence at the leadership position.

The playbook has a good base, but has foul smell all over it.  RIM had a great shot at this and they pissed away what could have been a great product and a great opportunity for mindshare.  The consumer has moved on and may never take a serious look back at RIM again.

      • The Thrasher

It’s not that the Playbook and all Android tablets are bad…it’s just that the iPad is that good. Sales figures don’t lie.

    • Applesucksfatties

People keep talking about the sales figures..but you are comparing apples to oranges (no pun intended)..   1. Apple was first to market with the iPad.   2. Traditionally, RIM has been more enterprise focused  3.  Apple’s cult following also drives their sales.

Bottom line, when you compare  specs/functionality/etc. of both the iPad and the PlayBook… both have their pros and cons and personally I don’t think one is BETTER than the other.    Yes, the iPad sells more..  but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is a better product, it just means that more consumers are purchasing it.

      • The Thrasher

AppleSux- I thought someone making big bucks would understand this.  Sales =
the success or failure of a product.  Apple build what the people were
used to, and WHAT THE WANTED.  RIM did their best to release a product,
bud didn’t ASK THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANTED.

Yes RIM has done well in Enterprise (BES).  So why didn’t they release
BES on the Non-3G FailBook?  The people like BBM, what?!?!?  No BBM on
the Non-3G FailBook?  EPIC failure.  RIM blew it!  This is the reason
why their sales suck, and why their products FAIL!  RIM doesn’t listen
        to their customers.

      • Applesucksfatties

@1f7409e1fe023a8eb6678c9387752cdf:disqus – partially agree… however, I believe RIM management targeted the first iteration of the PlayBook to current BlackBerry users…   and when using the Bridge, you do get Email, Calendar, and BBM.  Was it a great strategy?  Probably not.. but hindsight is 20/20.  Would the PlayBook have been more successful if it was fully baked with the Android player when they released it?  Definitely.   Would having a 3G/4G version available at the time of release been helpful for sales? Probably.     The difference with Apple is they just took an iPhone and an iPod Touch (added GPS) and enlarged them.. .because that is what they heard the market wanted.  This PlayBook is new territory for RIM…… maybe their strategy to release a 1/2 baked tablet tailored to only BB users wasn’t a good idea.. but they can’t go back in time and change their decision.  Personally, I love my PlayBook and can’t wait for the new OS and the new apps in the pipeline.

Ipad market share was stellar last year. But is is forecast to loose about 25% by years end. What was so great about. It last year was it was the only full sized tablet. Now it is out performed by 3 Android Tablets. Amps are cute and all. I have about 200 on my XOOM. But web browsing is really what people want and use on a daily basis and that is the iPads downfall. Its not that great on the web. Plus most of the good applications will be browser/web based and not OS specific. And really, name one tablet app that you actually need on a daily basis?

Any bets on which month the firesale will start? I’m thinking January, after they wait out the holiday season and still no one buys them.

That just sucks for the PlayBook. RIM should have went with improving the Smartphone line before they put all the resources into a tablet. Stretching yourself too far can lead to failure in all areas.

Yep. and in their quiet moments I’d guess they realize that now.

But you know the sentance which precedes more disasters that just about anything…….It seemed like a good idea at the time! ;-)
