HP to lay off 525 Palm employees this week

Business

HP will lay off as many as 525 employees from its Palm division this week AllThingsD reported on Tuesday. HP killed off its webOS mobile operating system in mid-August when it also announced it would discontinue the development of webOS devices such as the TouchPad and Palm Pre family of smartphones. “As part of this decision, the webOS GBU is undergoing a reduction in workforce,” an HP spokesperson explained. “Today’s actions are part of this initiative. During this time, we stand by our commitment to our webOS customers and will work to ensure that support and service for customers are not adversely affected. HP is exploring ways to leverage webOS software.”

Google will be picking up those 525 employees after they are laid off. The growth of Android will continue in mountain view.

you sound like a dam fool who would pick up those 525 people who couldnt do shit with webOS… no problem i’ll wait

dunno. just like RIM who are laying off far more than this, these people, the workers, are probably ok.  It’s the management of both companies that should be fired. Not the developers etc. HP was a lifeline for Palm,  but couldn’t make it work.  At least in California they have some good strong companies around to pick them up.  I wish them well.

The poor (low-level employees) get poorer and the rich (CEOs) get richer….except for Mike L and Jim B….they will be in the unemployment line real soon because of their mistakes

Just another direct impact of HP’s incompetence and politicians in this country want to give them a tax break as a reward! Hope these folks fall on their feet sooner rather than later.

Booooooiii. Hissssss. Failed execution by HP. Great OS botched by a company without vision. Sad day.

I HATE Hewlitt-Packard. I’ve never been impressed by any of their products (hate their printers) or sad and stupid leadership.

HP’s big mistake was to try to incorporate Palm into HP products after it acquired it. It should have done the reverse – Palm products were some of the most innovative on the market – even ones that are years old have features and usability that no new products on the market have…

Poor Palm folks.  Many felt like they were reviving an underdog and that WebOS would be a great competitor.  Their WebOS was nice, but the last thing we need is another mobile phone OS.  With windows Phone 7 I suspect will see the stragglers like Bada etc also killed off.

Guess we saw this coming but it’s sad all the same. Best of luck to all those affected I sincerely hope they will find employment elsewhere in a reasonable amount of time.

And when apple pick them up apple will ask them everything about WebOS to COPY it

      • sad end

at least there is no danger of them doing that with ex RIM employees….. ;-)

If only Nokia would have bought Palm. I know I have lost so much faith in HP. I won’t ever buy anything HP if I can help it.

  • Tnvprofen

I will never buy HP ever again! Promise that. That is sad that a OS with such great features gets dumped like that. HP should have not bought it is they didn’t care about it or didnt want to go with it. They did not even put out a solid phone before dumping it.

Palm was at death’s door a few times before HP took over.  The big problem is that the people put in charge on the HP side were the same people who couldn’t bring a winning handset to market.  It’s pretty funny that HP continues use the “Invent” tagline, because they don’t. And if they DID, they’d screw up between the inventing and bringing to market….which really is Xerox’s core competence haha,

People were still working on Palm crap? Up next an article about xyz company laying of employees who make eight-track cartridges.
