T-Mobile still confident acquisition by AT&T will proceed

Business

T-Mobile on Friday issued a new statement to the press, reasserting its belief that AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile USA will ultimately be approved. Last week, attorneys general from seven states joined the United Stated Department of Justice’s lawsuit attempting to block the $39 billion deal. The DOJ’s suit argues that the takeover would eliminate T-Mobile as “an independent, low- priced” wireless option for U.S. consumers, adding that it would also remove a great deal of competition from a market already dominated by giant telcos. T-Mobile’s senior vice president of government affairs Tom Sugrue disagrees, obviously, and he says the merger will benefit consumers rather than harm them. “Given the numerous benefits the merger will bring to consumers, businesses, and the US economy in the form of greater innovation, enhanced competition, and increased jobs, we remain confident that the facts will prevail and the acquisition will proceed,” Sugrue said in a statement to the press. AT&T and T-Mobile have made consistent arguments in favor of the deal since it was first proposed but the companies have a long battle ahead, with opponents that now include Sprint, multiple U.S. states and the U.S. government.

yh awesome , I just got a 827.89$ iPad2 for only 101.17$ and my mom got a 14989.89$ HTV for only 253.93$, they are both coming tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HTV to my boss for 500$ that I only paid 78.24$ for.

    So…

    DoJ is suing AT&T…
    So is Sprint…
As well as 7 major states that make up 1/3 of the US population…
And the FCC will probably follow the same course…

and T-Mobile still thinks this will go through?

Maybe they just have to say it in order to keep up their end of the deal, but anyone with half a brain has to know that this deal is in real trouble. I can’t remember the last time a merger got so much heat because it was clearly anti-competitive.

Maybe I’m ignorant here but, could someone explain to me how this would increase more jobs? Wouldn’t it be just replacing everything T-Mobile and replacing it with AT&T?

According to AT&T they will bring foreign jobs back to the USA.  Not sure if I believe it, but that’s what they said.

Still I am not against the merger, because I don’t believe anyone has a legal right to stop it.

Actually they have full right to block the merger. What people don’t realize is the carriers are given “privileges” by the government that others do not have. If ATT and T-mobile are willing to part with those privileges then they are free to merge.

One of these privileges is the right to license spectrum. Cause all spectrum is owned by the government, and carriers license it. So I ask you this question, how long would it take for both companies to go bankrupt once they loose their license to operate in their respective spectrum?

Now then if the companies wish to keep their license, they better follow whatever the government says.

And why couldn’t at.&t not bring those “foreign jobs back now?’

        Bait n switch

They are TMobile jobs, not AT&T jobs.

“Consumers still praying that acquisition by AT&T will be halted”

This is all just ‘Wishful thinking’ on their part . . . .

Maybe the final resort…AT&T will buy out the entire DT system (and all T-Mobile in Europe)?

    • IPwn

DT is the biggest wireless provider in the UK, I highly doubt that will ever happen. I don’t even think AT&T has enough cash to buy them.

  • mrpeewee

Let the Govt. stop it.  If I was T-Mobile, I’d shut the network down and then put it up for sale.

I guess it’s good retards like you aren’t running tmobile rofl

like stopping the merger will somehow save tmobile.  the company is gone, whether the deal goes through or not.  DT is going to dump the company, but everyone seems to believe if somehow big bad att doesnt get it that DT will just say nevermind and continue the company.  tmobile customers live in denial.

TMO was an independent company before DeutscheTelecom and can be so again.  Perhaps you’re too young to remember Voicestream.

I think someone is forgetting the 2B cash that T-Mobile stands to make if the deal falls through . . . .

      *Rolls eyes*

T-Mobile will not just cease to exist if this merger is denied. All that will happen is that T-Mobile will have to find another suitor. Being bought out by another company that will keep them as the fourth national carrier is best for the consumer.

    • zps

you lost the plot.   at&t is not the only game in town.

I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to think these T-Mobile guys are playing AT&T.  They stand a chance to gain some money from AT&T if this deal fails, so I don’t expect them to be excited just yet, even if they know this deal will flop.  They’re playing along until the deal finally fails in court then they’ll come out and say what we’ve been thinking.  They AGREE WITH THE DOJ’S DECISION to block the merger.

I don’t know which I find more more offensive: The fact that they are lying to us or the insult to our intelligence in expecting us to believe them.

  • rdg666

I’d love to know why T-Mobile want this merger to take place so badly, given the fact that AT&T will have to pay them a shitload of money if it doesn’t happen…

  • zps

The commentary from the T-Mobile SVP is nothing short of pure rubbish.   Listening to the abject lies of interested parties to anti-competitive mergers turns my stomach.

Oh I am sure all the right pockets will be “lubed” to make it happen. Never fails.
