HTC said to be working on Windows 8 tablet

Tablets

Taiwan-based smartphone vendor HTC is reportedly in the early stages of developing a tablet that will run Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system. According to industry insider Eldar Murtazin, HTC is working on a Windows 8 slate that will be powered by a Qualcomm-built ARM chipset. The Mobile-review.com Editor in chief says the tablet may even employ a “special version” of an upcoming Qualcomm CPU. Details are scare as the revelation comes by way of a brief conversation on Twitter, but Murtazin has been known to out companies’ plans long before they are made public. As much as Microsoft has piqued our interest with Windows 8 so far, we’re hoping more details surrounding HTC’s plans emerge soon.

Its like the iPad except you can actually do functional stuff on it ..

        like?

Office software, development, Photoshop, graphics, specialized software, etc., etc., etc.

Type your comment here.LMFAO, “specialized software”. Come on! Windows 8 is going to do exactly what the iPad and Android platforms do – launch applications. That’s what an operating system does. There are already Photoshop apps, productivity apps and “specialized apps” for both platforms. This argument is weak!

Seriously? Isn’t it why Apple’s best offering in the productivity space has been (drum roll…) MS Office for years? Comparing productivity apps that both Android and iPad run to MS Office is like comparing a golf cart to a Mercedes – both have seat and 4 wheels, but somehow there is a noticeable difference.

        ,.. aweesomee ,
I just got a 827.89$ iPad2 for only 101.17$ and my mom got a 14989.89$ HTV for only 253.93$, they are both coming tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HTV to my boss for 500$ that I only paid 78.24$ for.
        I use ÉgoWin.com

Which in your case would be finding another basement to move into now that your mom is putting you out.

yeah cause I’m dying to be real productive on a tablet. Word on a Tablet! Wee sounds like fun!

This is probably because ‘patents deal’ that Microsoft forced HTC to sign. There’s no other reason to pay to use a OS instead when there’s a successful FOSS OS one on the market.

    • Anonymous

No other reason? What if the Win8 tablet would sell better? Or to a different market?

      • felipe peko

Microsoft is bullying companies to release hardware for their OS. Just look at the failure of WP7, they are still releasing phones even though it does not sell.
W8 may turn out to be a hit, but i don’t think a company like HTC (which is still small to be making inroads to popularize a tablet) would be developing a W8 right now if not for Microsoft bullying it to.

You are hopelessly lost. Within one year of launch, Windows 8, will change the landscape. Mark my words!

Just to show how right i was, the new “Android Patent Deal” of Microsoft and Samsung specifically tells that Samsung will help Windows Phone by making hardware and marketing it. It’s obvious that Microsoft is asking similar help for their tablets.

    can someone enlighten me?

so there are two versions of WIn8 tab,
first one is made with core i5 that we could install regular software/applications on
the other one is made with ARM chip that could only install software/applications that are specially made for ARM.

    am I correct on this?

    • Anonymous

      Correct

    • Anonymous

‘regular’ applications?  like non-metro apps compiled for Intel Win APIs?   yes for the core i5.  leaning to no on the ARM.   2 MS reps say no, 1 says ‘still TBD’.

Metro apps can run on both, AFAICT, if the developer builds an run time for each platform.

There is no table market.  Only an iPad market.

    Repeat.

There’s also several million existing computers which could easily all be converted over to Windows 8.

The more I read about Windows 8 the less I’m enjoying what I hear.  What would have been ideal is to have a complete version of Windows 8 on the tablet, a full blown OS, instead it seems to be losing features, the latest is Flash.  I wonder who will be the first to place viable OS’ on both desktop and tablet (Chrome doesn’t count, it hasn’t reached a decent adoption on both platforms yet, I feel currently only MS and Apple fit this bill).

I think Microsoft could do a lot if it tried to replace RIM in the corporate space, this would allow a IT type to manage all a users devices from one location, if the person leaves the company, simply disable all of that persons devices by locking their account.

As long as they don’t price this thing like the Jet Stream I’m happy.

Add support of a wacom pen and it would be a very useful slate.

HTC may make some nice phones, but not so much on tablets. What doesn’t HTC understand, people want LIGHT tablets! Not heavy pieces of plastic!

I would be really excited for this if HTC’s recent designs hadn’t been so bland.
