AT&T CFO: 4G LTE service launching to public in five markets on Sunday

mobile

During the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Entertainment & Communications conference on Thursday, AT&T’s chief financial officer John Stephens said that AT&T will activate its 4G LTE network in its first five markets on Sunday, FierceWireless reported. The network has been active as part of a soft launch in the AT&T’s five markets, which include Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, and we have already seen a few glimpses of what the network is capable of. We published an exclusive video on September 6th which showed the HTC Jetstream 4G tablet achieving download speeds around 22Mbps and screenshots of a 4G modem achieving 13Mbps download speeds in Chicago. In addition, we saw the same modem reaching speeds up to 25Mbps in Atlanta. AT&T hopes to activate its network in 15 total markets and launch its first LTE smartphone by the end of the year.

What is the point of those high speeds if date is capped at 2GB?

The same point as lower speeds capped at 2GB….?  I mean, you do realize that data transfer speed has absolutely no effect on how much a person will actually use, right?  Data is not constantly streaming while you are browsing the web or tooling around on facebook.  The only thing it will increase is the speed it’ll take to load those webpages.

What, do you download whole linux distros on a daily basis?  With 2 GB you can open thousands of websites or watch 20 hours of video…   If you have a data consumption problem, I’d suggest turning on WiFi while at home.

They will be launching on Sunday and they will suffer a Network crash on Monday – True Story™®♪

oh right…..like Verizon did, and their phones couldn’t even default to 3G automatically. Reliable huh?

What does it matter, it’ll get throttled anyway…

What is the point of launching the 4G LTE system sunday but not having a phone for it until the end of the year?

    • Anonymous

USB stick modems. I believe they have one available now. Verizon didn’t have a phone at first launch either.

I’ve had the Sierra Wireless LTE Wi-Fi device since it’s 8/21 launch.  I’ve yet to get LESS than 16MB/sec down and 14MB, yes 14MB/sec up.  Granted, I’m in Dallas and so is AT&T’s headquarters, but I’ve been amazed at the speed and reliability that I’ve received throughout the Dallas Fort Worth area these past few weeks.  I tried two Verizon LTE devices immediately before this one and their performance was dismal…

I know we all have our network preferences and rarely will you convince someone to cross over to your side of the fence if your opinions should differ, but I have always been pleased with AT&T.  My company recently switched me from an AT&T iPhone 4 to a Verizon iPhone 4 and I’m waiting for approval to go back to AT&T–the Verizon unit is awful…and SLOW.

    Great job, AT&T!

Just in case you’re not keeping score.  AT&T 5 LTE Markets with no Phones.  Verizon 145 LTE Markets with phones.  Oh yes sign me up for AT&T

Here is what cracks me up….. They are talking about these speeds of 15-25 Mbps and everyone is blown away with these speeds. People who have Verizon LTE are bragging the same thing. You know those are great speeds. Here is the problem though…..ummmm No one is on the LTE Network yet! Let’s see what the speeds are in 6 months with a city full of people with LTE devices.
