Apple’s iPad 2 and new Windows 8 tablet face off in 11-minute video

Tablets

Microsoft’s OS of the future will make its way to a range of devices, but all eyes are on one market in particular: tablets. Microsoft is beyond focused on proving that it can compete in the tablet space, which is currently dominated by Apple’s iPad line. WinRumors sat down with an Apple iPad 2 running the latest iOS 5 beta and a Windows 8 tablet prototype on Thursday, and spent nearly 11 minutes comparing the two slates on camera. The video runs through a wide range of functions, giving users a good idea of how the two devices match up. Of course, the Windows 8 build on the tablet in the video is an early beta that is likely about a year away from release, but Microsoft chose to make the build available to the public so it’s obviously open season for showdowns. WinRumors’ full head-to-head video comparison follows below.

I don’t mind being locked into Apple’s little world on my iPhone. However, when it comes to a more meatier experience, comparing this to the iPad, I’d be quite happily all over Windows 8 in a flash.

It might, as a whole experience, not be as slick compared to what Apple offers, but it’s more than a good enough alternative. Couple this with the much greater control you’ll have over the whole system and OS (unless the hardware is rubbish), then despite any less than intuitive quirks of Windows, I’d take this over an iPad every day of the week.

Tablets Windows 8 not just Consumer but for SMB & Enterprise , i also believe Windows 8 Smartphones could eat market share from RIM in Business & Apple/Android Consumer space

Woohoo, the system of tiles and tiles comes to tablet.  Does it come bundled in with blue screen of death?

BSOD is most likely due to a bad driver. Since Microsoft now and has for a while verifies drivers getting a BSOD is rarely seen if ever. So come up with something a little more relevant to complain about.

Clearly Microsoft has done something really innovative with the UI and I like it, but is it enough? To be successful, this thing has to be leaps and bounds above the iPad and iOS. I’m just not seeing that in this video. Indeed there are more comparisons and reviews to come until it’s released in the next year or so, but by that time Apple will have released the iPhone 6 and iPad 3.

I can not wait for Windows 8 Tablets! Looks really good!

I think you misunderstand the alt keyboard. you don’t hold down and swype, you click then click. it is not an error. This is how android does it too.

With multi-touch keyboards, you can usually accomplish this a couple ways. You can use the multi-touch feature where you can type in almost the same fashion as a regular keyboard, with multiple contact points on screen at once, or you can use the sticky lock functionality where modifier keys such as Alt, Ctrl, or Shift are engaged before hitting a primary key. The huge drawback with onscreen keyboards, used in a conventional way, is that you can’t really do touch typing, because the slightest key contact registers as a key event.  Swype and technologies like it allow you to be a faster typist on an on screen keyboard because you don’t have to make the software differentiate between an actual touch event and extraneous, unintentional input.

Can I trade in my iPad for that Windows tablet? lol

Windows 8 looks neat but they aren’t doing anything more or new other than what Apple has accomplished already.  However, unlike Android which just clones Apple stuff, Microsoft is drawing a distinction with the UI.

Also, iOS 5 won’t rely on iTunes anymore. I don’t get the comments complaining about iTunes. Besides, iTunes is a positive.  When iOS5 is released it will have additional abilities than with iOS4 including integration with iCloud. It will mean that your files will be automatically synced and it will mean your data will be accessible anywhere the internet is available. It will also mean that even if your iPad is destroyed, everything is saved. You can buy a new iPad and be restored just as before.

Lastly, Windows 8 tablet OS won’t be Windows 8 compatible. Meaning, your apps won’t run on both. Again, it will be just like Apple’s stuff. For instance, on an iPad, you can write word processing documents and print them or email or share them. You already can edit this same document on any other computer. Windows 8 isn’t doing anything new here. They are both just as capable PC replacements. Apple has just succeeded in doing this right and Microsoft is basing Windows 8 on this ability of Apple.

You can attempt to put down Windows 8 and it’s your choice, but I’m here to tell you your assessment of Windows 8 is totally bunk!   But I understand where this is coming from – what I sense here is fear.  You’re seen the future and you’re like holy crap!  The Windows stuff is way too powerful!!  Unfortunately Apple won’t be able to sue to prevent the onslaught.  But I’m here to say – good luck!

“Lastly, Windows 8 tablet OS won’t be Windows 8 compatible.”
      utter nonsense. ok.

It’s not. Microsoft has already stated that no desktop applications will run on Arm….

    10, 09, 08, 07, 06, 05, 04, 03, 02, 01 -  Ipad gets knocked out!  Microsoft thank you – can’t wait for the full release.  This new OS is totally awesome!

    • Gfoliv

You’ll have to wait a lot. It will only come with iPad 3 and iOS 6. And then we’ll compare. We can’t compare something in the market with a project. For now, iPad rules.

Guess you didn’t have time to watch.

wow, a real ipad competitor, i like apple alot, but windows 8 looks beautiful. just wondering how it holds out on this hardware, in my experience, it takes a fairly highspec’d computer to run windows well, its prone to so many problems, hopefully this does better. i also wonder about tablet specific app selection, i hope it ends up sometime being as good as the ipads selection. it would be awesome if this formed apple to release a more osx like os for tablets

  • ibiza2004

I wouldn’t buy either tablet if I had a carpet like that.

Windows 8 will not support x86 apps.. so why do I need it again?

    • Anonymous

Only running on ARM processors. but many old x86 programs like ms office will be brought over to ARM.
Additionally, if the tablet is running on intel’s soc chips it will natively run the x86 programs.
And then of course w8 will support x86 on laptops and desktops as usual.

Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, WHY do your opinion matters? Your picture is of a 40 year old hideous man who is probably a virgin. You have a google+ logo in your picture which most likely means you are gay since 95% of the people on google+ are men. I clicked on your link and saw a ‘personal blog’ this is the equivalent of a diary… for nerds…

In conclusion you are a 30 – 40 year old gay, ugly, virgin. Who is a nerd with a e-Diary.
Is there a reason you felt you had permission to speak?
