Steve Ballmer: No platform will ship more than Windows

Software

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer surprised developers during Micorosft’s BUILD conference in California on Wednesday when he took the stage to talk up Microsoft’s new operating system, currently named Windows 8. Ballmer noted that there have already been 500,000 downloads of the operating system since it went live last night. “We still have a long way to go with Windows 8,” Ballmer said. “We’re retooling all of what we do.” Ballmer believes that the changes will compel developers to begin to favor Microsoft’s operating system, which he expects will ship on 350 million PCs this year alone. “There is no phone, there is nothing on the tablet, there is no operating system on the planet that will ship 350 million units of anything other than Windows,” Ballmer boasted, noting that Windows 8 supports both Intel and ARM chipsets. Before wrapping up, Ballmer, in typical fashion, called on “developers, developers, developers” to rally around Windows 8.

Ballmer misses one important factor in his prognosis about the success of his grand operating system: People are actually starting to have a choice now. The secret to their success has always been a process of elimination; they were simply the only one left standing after all their competitors folded, mostly thanks to their illegal business practices. Microsoft doesn’t now how to actually compete.

I’m sorry but anyone who counts new pcs loaded with windows 8 is an idiot.  That doesn’t prove popularity.  The 500,000 downloads has more to do with people wanting to see what it’s all about and wanting to check it out.  That someone downloaded it doesn’t mean that they will upgrade or buy a new pc with it.  Do I mention that Win 8 looks more like Windows 7 + Windows Phone grafted on it?  Furthermore, the UI just seems too gimmicky.  If MS really wants to do something different in the tablet market then it needs to design a touch screen OS from the ground up.  As I said earlier taking a UI and adding it to a current OS and adding a few changes to it is not anything compelling or exciting.

“There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It’s a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I’d prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get.”

    Steve Ballmer, 4/30/2007.

Yeah, I think I’ll take pretty much anything this bumbling joker says with a grain of salt.

this is kinda a no shit comment by ballmer.  windows always does well because its on just about every pc everywhere.  comparing it to a mobile OS is stupid, a mobile (tablet) os will never be able to compete with a hybrid pc/tablet os when you are counting pc sales with it.

that said, windows 8 still has a long way to go, it definitely needs more polish and for gods sake please add support for multitouch trackpads, the tile screen would benefit a ton if i could just swipe around on the trackpad vs pressing the keyboard or scroll bar on the bottom.

The lack of rational thought and logic displayed by Ballmer’s disciples, despite hard evidence otherwise, is quite funny considering what they accuse Apple fans of. At least Apple fans can back up the assertions. Most of the Windows morons sound like six-year olds yelling at each other during recess.
