BlackBerry Curve 9380 (Orlando) hands-on

Exclusive

In addition to scoring some quick intimate moments with the brand new BlackBerry Bold 9790 (Bellagio) yesterday, we were also able to check out the company’s first ever touch Blackberry Curve, the BlackBerry Curve 9380 (Orlando). The styling of the Curve 9380 is a mix of the BlackBerry Bold on the top of the handset, and it continues down into a design much like the BlackBerry Torch 9850. Around back, the phone looks more like the traditional BlackBerry Curve smartphone that we all know. As far as raw specifications, the Curve 9380 will feature an 800MHz processor, 3.25-inch display, 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video capture support, 1GB of built-in storage and NFC. Look for it to be released in the coming months, though a source at Telus told BGR that it could come sooner rather than later. Check out all of the photos in our gallery, which is linked below.

        ,.. coool

I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for.

I like the sorta old retro styling. Like some cars are doing. Might work?

Hey Jon I’m surprised you haven’t called it utter crap yet. I can’t wait for your review!!!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

I will speak up for Jon. It’s utter crap and unworthy of a review.

      • Applesucksfatties

        buu…buu…but I’m so busy.

    • Bringit

      it’s utter crap.

    • http://www.bgr.com Jonathan Geller

It’s probably crap, but! For the market it’s targeting (people upgrading from featurephones, low-cost market) it most likely won’t be a bad choice. That’s very different than a device like the Torch 9850 being positioned against an iPhone and Android handset.

but youre still gonna ask RIM to send you one right?

      • Applesucksfatties

I hope they send him a box of dog poo as paybacks for all of the negative PR on iBGR.

  • Bboot36

    First ?

Hey you forget me a-hole. Blackberry is dead and for old people who can’t understand how to use a touch screen.

      • Bringit

f-d up he excluded you Norm.  You should be right up there with the smart people.  The truth will come out in the end!

      • ScroatFan

My 2 year old storm is better than this garbage galaxy s4g

      • The Thrasher

Yeah I don’t know what his problem is Norm. AppleSux has his hands full defending RIM day and night. Now with all the bad press RIM is getting on BGR, he mightbgo postal on us.

Blackberries without physical keyboards are like cornflakes without the milk

      good?

I really want a great blackberry….but damn, they need to make “the one” very quickly or my wallet is going to be consumed by Apple/Android (again)

  • http://www.facebook.com/michaeljmcgrath Michael McGrath

correct me if im wrong, but bg has been lacking in the worthwhile leaks department for a while now.

…which is why i started following it in the firstplace.

Gosh, I really hope the side volume buttons on this one don’t destroy Jonathan’s world like the ones on the Torch 9850 apparently did.

Man…. Where is the blackberry police??, there are people in here speaking all kinds of bad things about the the CURVE !

    • BBA Brian

      its a curve….. whats their to say…

      • BBA Brian

        edit * there to say*

  • zacamandapio

    BGR,
What phone is the one on the right?
The torch has buttons.  This one doesn’t.

  • Drew

I don’t care how big it is, why do all of RIM’s touchscreens have to look like the Storm?? Can we get some innovation from the design dept…

    • Applesucksfatties

Hey Drew…ever seen an iPhone?  Last time I checked, they all pretty much looked the same….

  • ScroatFan

No. the storm is a great looking phone and a design change is out of the question. Blackberry style is refined to perfection. If you want 400 versions, get an andriod. If you want one crappy version get an iclone.

  • Steve Jenkins

Who the hell keeps giving the Boy Toy Genius BlackBerry’s?

  • RIM-Jobbers are Whiners

Let me ask you RIM-jobbers a question. What phone will you get when RIM/Blackberry ceases to exist? TRUE STORY!!

    • Applesucksfatties

I’ll probably not own a phone then..because I refuse to use an iToy… or a buggy, battery draining Android.

      • Cornbread

I’m not much for the contentious exchanges but I can’t disagree about the Android battery life. To me that is staggering how poor the batteries are on that hardware. What are they missing/doing wrong? Btw, the battery life on the 9930 is abysmal as well. So much for BBs redeeming value.

      • Anonymous

Do you have a 9930?  I get 2 days battery on mine.  Better than 2 hours on an android

      • Cornbread

I had the Verizon 9930 for 2 weeks. Loved the device. Typing and touchscreen combo is awesome. However, not having the ability to work on the phone while making calls is awful. I spend a lot of time in my car idling between meetings talking on the speaker in the car. No emails til you hang up. That coupled with the nagging issues of emails showing up 15-30 minutes late (google Verizon BBs not getting emails) made it a deal killer. I will no doubt replace my 9700 when ATT gets it and use it and my iPhone as I have done for awhile now. The battery was Not good, this has also been the experience of many 99xx users.

      • The Thrasher

Guess your dumb ass will have to buy an WebOS POS then eh???

They’re on par with RIM, so it shouldn’t phase you one bit.

    • Anonymous

what are you going to do when you cant complain about rim? sorry, rims not going anywhere… worse case, google will buy them.

      • Anonymous

har har har-and why not, their buying everything and everyone else nowadays. If they got rid of the Jim and Mike show I think it’d be great!!

  • Ponhoss

It should have came out four Christmas ago!

  • Hamburgerler

A recent survey of terrorist inmates at Guantanamo Bay revealed that 9 out of 10 prisoners would rather be water-boarded, than forced to use one of the new BlackBerrys.

  • Guest123

It could do well but its all about the price. This is supposed to be the cheapo blackberry. If carriers try to sell it for something other than free or some nominal fee, it won’t be able to compete with the hordes of androids that are subsidized and can be had for 150.

  • Drew

@Applesucksfatties —-> Why are you so butt hurt, it’s a fact. All of the full touchscreens look like Storms. And at last check, yes, there is 1 iPhone but there is the 9500/9530/9550/9570/9850/9860 which all look the same. I’ve had 4 BlackBerry’s so I’m quite familiar. Stop making your fanboy-ish comments look so obvious. For the record, I don’t carry a Blackberry, iPhone or an Android device.

    • The Thrasher

Drew, AppleSux is obsessed with two things. RIM and cocks. Enough said!!

  • http://www.blackberry-unlocking.org Blackberry unlocking

The 9380 looks really nice… i am using unlocked Blackberry 9900 but this one looks really nice for the full touch screen lovers… great RIM keep on going.

  • Doug Bolster

I hope they can turn it around but they have WAY to many products.  The 9900/9930 is great, most of the other phones, not so much.  Their build quality has improved on this round of phones though (OS 7 versions).
On my carrier I can get a Nexus S for $0 down on a 3 year contract, vs a BB curve (OS 7 version) for $49 on a 3 year contract..I mean what are they thinking??
Its this kind of stuff that kills BB:  overpriced phones, too many models, outdated OS, and low end BB with terrible specs.
I think they should cut their lineup to two QNX phones, a qwerty model (like a 9900) and a touchscreen (the new colt), and thats it.  Ditch the curve, torch, pearl, style etc. its only hurting your image.

Good entry level touch BB. Not sure it’s needed but prob aimed at the pay and go plans.

  • WTF?

These phones must be rotting mike (everyone wants a physical keyboard) lazaridas’ guts.

It didn’t take them long to go from market leader to a slow, bloated “me too” company.

  • Anonymous

Sometimes I don’t see much point in producing a touchscreen phone if your OS hardly has any ‘usable’ apps for end users to download.. why don’t they just stick to their strength (Keyboard) and cut costs by only offering one touchscreen phone?
