Dolby and RIM strike licensing deal, lawsuit dropped

Dolby dropped a patent infringement case against Research In Motion after the two sides reached a licensing agreement, Reuters reported on Monday. Dolby filed a lawsuit against RIM on June 15th in the United States and in Germany in an attempt to block sales of BlackBerry smartphones and the BlackBerry PlayBook. The audio company also sought to recover financial damages. Dolby accused RIM of using its “highly efficient digital audio compression technologies” and filed a suit after RIM initially declined to pay licensing fees. The terms of Monday’s licensing agreement were not disclosed. Dolby’s technology is used in a number of popular smartphones from manufacturers such as Samsung, Nokia, HTC and LG.

        Listen you can claim that people saying RIM going down is stupid but it is a reality. One you are clearly not willing to accept. Their market share has slipped dramatically, and they are rushing phones out to try and keep their foot in the game. Sadly when you rush a product, you end up losing in the long run.         It took them over a year to release most of the latest models and the 9900 has been in the making for a couple years now.  It’s 2011, that’s a lifetime in the tech world.  What’s SAD is the people that continue to spend their time bashing RIM, obviously because they’re are jealous of something.         The only product RIM rushed out before it was ready is Playbook.  There is no argument there.  What other products did it rush out?  Some of the devices (like the original Torch) may have been underpowered but I don’t believe they were rushed.  BTW, you realize RIM has about 65 million subscribers who each pay a monthly fee.  We are talking about over $300M in monthly recurring revenue with very very high margin.  You want reality?  RIM may not overtake Apple or Android but it is far from going bust.  It will continue to be debt free and profitable.

        I’d heard RIM had done a “Kitchen Sink” job on it’s earnings expectations for this quarter but had not realized they are now recalibrating earnings expectations by comparing to a college student.
