Netflix app now supports all Android Froyo/Gingerbread devices

mobile

Netflix updated its Android application on Friday with support for any smartphone running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Netflix launched an Android app in May of this year, but it initially only supported a handful of high-end devices. Netflix slowly added support for a few more devices over the past couple of months, but anxious users were turning to leaked .APK files to try to get the service up and running on unsupported devices. Now, thankfully, getting the app on your Android phone won’t involve any tweaks. Netflix users should be sure to check the Android Market for the update if you have any long travel plans this weekend.

android is fragmented crap.   netflix on 100% of iphone. netflix on 100% of wp7. netflix only on 65% of androids LOL

By ‘all’ devices, you mean US?

Android is an outdated linux.distro running on a monolithic window along with windows me. Google will be bankrupt in 2 years. True story.

    • http://www.octechnophile.com David Amodt

how is that crack you’re smoking? google bk in 2 yrs? really?

    • Anonymous

A monolithic window?  I think you mean “monolithic kernel.”  Please get the words right before you parrot technical arguments that you (clearly) don’t understand.

      • Anonymous

I don’t think he’s heard that monolithic kernels are the way to go for performance. BSDs did it, NT had to pick up some of it, so did Mach. Classic microkernels essentially dead.

      • Anonymous

True.  In fact, the XNU-based “iKernel” isn’t a microkernel.  It’s a hybrid kernel, which really a monolithic kernel plus some marketing hype (as Torvalds put it, a bit too simply maybe).  The Tannenbaum debate is settled, and has been for almost 15 years (at least for practical purposes).  Mcz981′s argument goes something like: Windows CE is bad.  Windows CE uses a monolithic kernel.  Therefore monolithic kernels are bad.

Where is the Android 3.X support? :-(

Yippie!  Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a-rockin’.  Video quality looks like phone resolution expanded to tablet, but its better than nothing.

Works great on the iPad, but less fragmentation there

      • http://plus.google.com/100780849097348485078/posts Stynkfysh

Surely – I have 2 iPad’s – they are lower function devices, unfortunately.  If the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a scalpel, then the iPad’s are a caveman’s club.  That’s not to say that most apps aren’t far superior on iOS or that that hardware doesn’t rock – its just that iOS limits the capabilities to the point where someone with high-level requirements is left wanting.  So having Netflix on my Tab 10.1 allows me to sell my iPad 2 since it is one of the apps we use regularly.  But don’t think for a second that iOS is not ‘fragmented’.  Apple simply controls the iOS market and routinely rejects applications because they don’t work smoothly across all iOS hardware platforms, including older versions.  This seems to limit the functionality of iOS apps because they have to satisfy the lowest common denominator of Apple iOS hardware.  The iPad 2 is a waste of a purchase, in my opinion, because the majority of apps do not run significantly better despite iPad 2′s superior hardware. And don’t forget, there are a ton of apps written for iPhone that have to up-scaled when used on the iPad – same as I just said that the Tab was doing with Netflix.

If you really thing that the tab 10.1 is better than an iPad I feel bad for you. That thing is nothing but a half assed copy of the iPad. Why do you think samsung Changed it as soon as the iPad 2 came out.

      • Wallie Hawkins

gotta agree the galaxy tab 10.1 is the best tablet device on the market (right now)

if Droid sucks as you say dear Sir one change your display picture and stick your name in the middle of an apple. then that way we all know you are a douche who likes apples. and lets face it. You suck..

    • Scott Duffy

That’s halfbaked Android for ya. iPad had it how long ago?

      • http://plus.google.com/100780849097348485078/posts Stynkfysh

IPad = April 1, 2010, iPhone August 26, 2010 – so let’s see, roughly 34 months after the first iOS device was launched, Netflix added their App to it.  And likewise, roughly 34 months after the first Android device was launched, Netflix is now available on all Android devices (was on some previously).  But its not because Android is half-baked as much as it is ensuring the security of the intellectual property of the films.  Android allows applications more freedom and control of the phones while Apple keeps their applications in a much more controlled / sand boxed environment.  That keeps things more secure and enhances stability, but limits the applications capabilities, which for most people is fine.  To call Android half baked is about as true as saying Apple’s devices are magic.

        DROID sucks. Face it.

Wow that only took 2 years and some change to happen Lmao.

  • ScroatFan

They fixed the app just in time for the big 2 to have data caps so what good is it now? Maybe this galaxy s piece of junk can over heat trying to watch a movie over 4g while simultaniously using all my data allotment… Scroat!

if you do not like android then you dear sir just dont comment about it…you come out with stupid comments like the above and are just pathetic and childish to argue on a well respected tech site..oh wait its BGR so no carry on your stupid comments you muppet

      • Southpaw

It’s not a stupid comment, he’s talking about AT&T and Verizon capping data. Which is going to make it very expensive to actually use Netflix often on the go.

      • Anonymous

im not having a go regarding the data plans im having a go at his constant moan regarding android..so what if he dont like stop bloody going on about it and give more intellectual comments..but looks like he can’t

  • Matt

Great.  Now I have a functional product that is handcuffed by my monthly data limit of 2GB.  No way I will pay the $80 for 10GB.

when people refer to the android OS as DROID…they really need to be educated more on what they’re trying to talk about seeing how droid is just a name licensed by Verizon to sell phones. and this has nothing to do with android more so the developer of the netflix app trying to figure out how to put it on android. i mean i had it on my original droid for a while now. and android 2.2 and 2.3 have been out for sometime. while other developers have been putting out great apps on android for a long time…it’s not androids fault that it took netflix forever to figure out. lots of people give android a hard time over ios just because apples had it out since 2007 and when that came out back then it total didnt have all the features it has today. it took the public to demand it and the developers to jump on board to get ios where it is today and if you take a look at android in its own timeline its right where apple was when they were picking up speed. android 4.0 is coming out this fall which will run on tablets and phones across the board lessening fragmentation and the coding on that is supposed to make it 100 times more easy to program for developers. I really dont understand how so many people on this site and other tech blogs get so angry and defensive to the point where they’ll flat out say “ios is better then android. everything you say or do is wrong or stupid” or the other way around. personally i like android and enjoy it to the extent that i look forward to whats coming next from google but i dont ridicule others for their preferences and thoughts.
