RIM’s new BlackBerry phones faring well with enterprise, consumer adoption slow

Business

Research In Motion’s new BlackBerry 7 smartphones are seeing strong initial sales among businesses looking to upgrade from older BlackBerry smartphones, however consumer sales have been weak according to Canaccord Genuity. In a research note, Canaccord analysts Mike Walkley and Matt Ramsay found during channel checks that upgrade sales of BlackBerry 7 devices in North America were quite strong with enterprise customers in August. Specifically, Verizon Wireless saw strong Bold 9930 upgrade sales among its substantial enterprise customer base, while AT&T and Sprint saw mixed sales. T-Mobile’s $300 Bold 9900 has not been selling well according to Canaccord’s checks. Read on for more.

“Our August checks indicated strong initial Bold 9930 sales to the large installed Verizon enterprise base, but most store managers indicated limited sales to consumer customers that continue to choose the iPhone or Android smartphones versus BlackBerry,” the analysts wrote. “With the Bold 9900 the first compelling new BlackBerry in nearly two years for Verizon customers, we were encouraged as our checks indicated Verizon’s large BlackBerry enterprise base appears to have strong demand for the first BlackBerry OS 7 device on Verizon’s network. However, our more consumer-centric retail store checks indicated smartphone consumers continue to overwhelmingly choose the iPhone 4 or new Android smartphones versus the $250 Bold 9900.”

Walkley and Ramsay continue, noting that initial sales of AT&T’s $50 Torch 9810 have been strong among consumers, though margins are likely tight considering the original Torch 9800′s $200 price tag. Canaccord believes RIM was forced to match the price of AT&T’s iPhone 3GS and HTC Status in order to attract consumers to the new Torch. Enterprise interest in the device has been lacking according to the firm’s checks, possibly due to businesses waiting for AT&T to launch the new Bold.

“Our checks at T-Mobile indicated weak initial sales for the Bold 9900, as Android smartphones maintain their top share at this carrier,” the note continues. “We believe the $300 price for this new BB 0S 7 device also contributed to the soft initial sales, and we anticipate T-Mobile will need to lower the price to match its competitors. Finally, our checks at Sprint indicated limited initial supply of Bold 9930 ($200) and the Torch 9850 ($150). While many stores sold out of initial quantities, most stores indicated very limited units at launch (<10 on average per store). As such, Sprint store managers indicated Android smartphones continue to sell much better than BlackBerry.” BGR has independently confirmed with multiple sources that Sprint retailers have received extremely limited inventory of RIM’s new BlackBerry 7 smartphones thus far.

Perhaps if they didn’t price them at $300…

    • Anonymous

Exactly, there are 3 members in my family waiting for the 9930 price to drop a little before we buy.  We are all definitely getting the new Bold, but just not at the price they are asking.  Day 1 of the first price drop they will have 3 more sales.

For everyone is the comments section who thinks BB is dead, or not as good as the competition… you lack intelligence, and you should do humanity a favor and kill yourself.
BlackBerry OS7 Smartphones are the best on the market. The PlayBook is the best tablet ever made. And when QNX comes to BlackBerry Smartphones you will all cry for mercy.

This is what you’re afraid of.
If you disagree, you are wrong.

      • Greg

        Are you a RIM employee?

      • The Thrasher

QXN is gay like AppleSux. I think both these fags work at RIM.

If OS7 and PB are so great, then why doesn’t anyone buy them?

      • Applesucksfatties

@bc48a658477efd76a7f79f5feb1be95c:disqus - aaaaw yeah.  Here comes Ass Thrashers alter ego…..HillBilly.. with the gay comments.  Since you hate BB so much, why don’t you take QNX’s advice………..

      • Yoyo

Nah i rather just continue using my Droid device which is ten times better than anything RIM will ever put out oh and as for a tablet well i don’t have one, but i would easily buy an Ipad over anything made by RIM.

    • http://rmbo47.myopenid.com/ rmbo47

That’s the crux of the matter. If your company is struggling and you have a hot new product, why price yourself out of the very market you’re desperate to regain?  If you want to sell to the consumer market, price it like a consumer phone. Seems like a concept Waterloo would understand, but then it appears they do not.

  • Anonymous

I’ve got tmobile and I won’t upgrade just for OS 7 and pay The $300. Now if it was a QNX phone that might change things but I will wait for the price to drop.

    • MK

      What does the OS matter?
I don’t think that the new OS(QNX) will change blackberry phones a lot – it is just OS!
We are using the service(BIS/BBM etc.) over the OS.
      OS7 is good enough.

“T-Mobile’s $300 Bold 9900 has not been selling well”  It is selling so poorly in fact it sold out online in 24 hours.

So Tmobile sold out of them because the drug dealers who can only afford tmobile needed to push their meth and coke.

    • numetheus

The BB is something they really don’t carry a lot of stock of. It isn’t like Android or iPhone where they have hundreds in the warehouse ready to ship. They buy units according to predicted demand. And for those devices, it is a waste of money to stock lots of them because ultimately consumers don’t choose Blackberry. Sold out means absolutely nothing.

      • Anonymous

And if they would have many in the shops, ppl would say they’re sitting there gathering dust… Man oh man.

Reminds me of a person who went to a new place and asked ppl to lend him money, of course everyone turned him down as someone they don’t know at all… So the guy complained that he doesn’t get it. In his hometown nobody wants to lend him money because they KNOW him, in other places they don’t want to lend him cuz they DON’T know him…

Another day, more dribble from some “analyst” on bgr.

TMO is sold out of the bold, so I highly doubt that sales are slow.

In fact, going in to take a look at the phone for myself, there were 4 others in the store that purchased the phone, not including the 2 I picked up for my wife and I.

Really, just give up aready, this daily negativity / cheap shot articles are getting comical. All they do is lower any credibility your site does still have. Face it, it came out on time, the specs are decent, there’s a variety of form factors to cater to tastes, and its selling well both from enterprise and consumer fronts despite what the various “analysts” known to you have said…

    • Anonymous

I’m pretty sure one of the retailers in the article said “RIM sent low quantities to start with” (10 per store!?!) C’mon man, that’s pretty lame! Seems like RIM’s customers believe in the company & products more than the company actually does! Sad!

    • numetheus

Stores aren’t going to buy hundreds of Blackberry devices because demand is so low. The only buy a few of them. A friend of mine at Sprint said they only have 5 in stock. When they say Blackberry sold out it means they sold 5 or maybe 10 compared to the much higher quantity of Android or iPhone.

      • Anonymous

“much higher quantity of Android”… Which android model sells so much more than any bb model?

    • http://www.facebook.com/vegas.nyc Vinny Verde

It didn’t come out on time, actually. I think it was theorized originally for June or July.

I would be very weary about locations saying that they “sold out” of these phones.  I’m sure that they did sell out, but consider for a moment what their starting inventory was.  I am familiar with one location in particular, in a very high-traffic NYC area, that only started with an inventory of 20 units. Selling out of that many units does entitle one to say that they “sold out”, but it isn’t all that impressive when you consider what they started with.
I’d me more interested to know if they sold out of 20 units and had a confirmed waiting list for another few hundred. If on-hand-inventory was in the range of 500 or more units, then I would say that, in that location, it is very popular and it is doing very well.  I would wait to get more information before saying the phone is truly a hit or not.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7GRQRQBEAWJIER7TASQJNPLZ4U Anonymous

You realize that once they sell out there 20 units that they order another 20? So when a store is sold out it does not mean they only sold 20 units total. The phone has been available for a few weeks. I’m sure they’ve turned over there inventory a few times by now.

      • Anonymous

Of course I realize that. But initial launch figures do not include sales of the phone after initial inventory has been depleted.
My point is this: Providers of the phone say that sales were strong and many locations sold out of their inventory. I want to know what hat total inventory number was. How many phone units did RIM provide for sale on day one and of those, what percent made it into the hands of the consumer. These are the figures that interest me because it paints a true picture of sales.

  • FTW

When will BGR do their own reporting? Am I the only person getting tired of seeing “according to (insert analysts company name here)……… analysts ___________and/or ____________ say this and that……”

I guess that’s why this is more of a Blog site than a news site

Wait a second! Let me drink a glass of RIM-kool-aid first! Ahhhhh! That’s better, now these numbers seem AWESOME to me!! This sounds good too: “Our checks at T-Mobile indicated weak initial sales for the Bold 9900, as Android smartphones maintain their top share at this carrier,” the note continues. “We believe the $300 price for this new BB 0S 7 device also contributed to the soft initial sales, and we anticipate T-Mobile will need to lower the price to match its competitors. As such, Sprint store managers indicated Android smartphones continue to sell much better than BlackBerry.” BGR has independently confirmed with multiple sources that Sprint retailers have received extremely limited inventory of RIM’s new BlackBerry 7 smartphones thus far. AWESOME!! lol

I just click on BGR for the tech-articles. I don’t understand why you crazy commenters always look for someone to blame for another persons opinion. I can think for myself + BGR is not the only website with this news. Maybe you should read more than a few websites so that you get different perspectives. BGR is actually a PRO BlackBerry website. They just have no choice but to cover the one company/device that makes the most noise. I’m always amazed how people have such a narrow view of things.

      • Applesucksfatties

        1. It is a stretch to call anything with “Anal..yst Mike Abramsky or Shaw Wu” a tech article.   2.  It isn’t that anyone is blaming you for having an opinion… you are free to have an opinion about anything you choose..  what gets me is that people like Max and Scroat (and a host of others) come out here to RIM articles and post shit daily.  You don’t like RIM fine.. just move along.  Got spank off to the multiple leaked picts of the i5… or to the newest Android phone.   Seriously… nobody cares what you RIM haters think.. so why even waste your time?

      • Anonymous

Your name is funny! I guess Mike Abramsky is only OK when he thinks RIM is valuable! Forget about the haters or fanboys & look at this in a realistic way. RIM’s products SUCK! They sell cheaply made hardware, that now has pricing that reflects that fact. Reality! Posters like you make me think RIM is so desperate, they plant trolls in the comment sections to argue for them. In the end, you just sound like a bunch loons, babbling nonsense.

      • Applesucksfatties

sure buddy..the 9900/9930 is cheap.  Have you even picked it up, much less used it?  Funny how iBGR gave it glowing reviews…..yet you think it is garbage.  Drink some more Apple flavored kool aid….

ps.  Yeah.. the billions of dollar on RIM’s balance sheet with no long term debt makes them desperate.  They secretly integrated me into iBGR to convert the dullards on this site from iToy/Crapdroid users to BlackBerrys……you are getting sleepy, very sleepy..

      • Anonymous

Why mention BGR, if they gave it a good review? You sound REALLY confused! I have pick-up the phone (except, every retail store had a “dumby” phone, instead of a working model). RIM has NO faith in their products. That’s why they: 1) don’t use working display models in retail; 2) the prices have been slashed to compete with the iPhone 3GS & 3) the prices vary, depending on which retail outlet you visit (fragmented). RIM sucks! Look, this is competition. If you’re going to make comparisons, then you need to go all the way. RIM’s annual profits = $5B/net, while Apple’s iPhone makes $3B+/quarter. Simple! The iPhone & iPad make more than RIM’s entire business. So, you can keep getting excited about a few billion in a multi-billion dollar industry, that RIM is floundering in! As long as Apple’s doors stay open, RIM will always be a reactionary, non-innovative disgrace to Canada (Nortel, pt.2). One more thing, NO one using idevices are thinking about RIM-tards! We feel sorry for you, but that’s all!

      • Applesucksfatties

@SBMobile:disqus – your last comment pretty much sums up your intelligence level.

        1. You said RIM products suck…  my mention of iBGR is because they gave the 9900/9930 a glowing review.  Your comment = FAIL.

        2.  The local Best Buys don’t have working models, but one of the local Verizon stores I was recently in did have a working model of the 9930…. and I know that AT&T stores have working models.   Your comment = HUGE FAIL!!

        3.  Phone prices depend on carrier.  AT&T discounted the Torch 9810 to compete with the iPhone and other touch Android devices.. but no carriers have discounted the 9900/9930s.   Get your facts straight.. AGAIN.. SB FAIL!

        4.  When you compare the financials of Apple to RIM, it is like comparing Johnson and Johnson (with their huge product line) to a small group of products from one of their smaller competitors.  Yes, Apple is more profitable.. but Apple also sells iPods, laptop and desktop PCs, etc.  Although BlackBerry has good brand recognition, Apple has slightly better brand recognition with its larger product selection.

5a.  RIM reactionary and non-innovative?  I would say lately, yes.. however.. how long did it take Apple to get basic functions like cut and paste?    Apple products are still chained to iTunes and they don’t have a native messaging app (yes, I’m aware both of these features are rumored to be coming in iOS 5) but BlackBerrys had these functions since I started using them over 7 years ago.   So who is reactionary? Again = FAIL on your part.

5b.  Do you need to be reminded of who actually started the smartphone concept. Here is a hint.. it wasn’t Apple…

        6.  If nobody using Apple devices are thinking about us “RIMtards” then why are you iSheep out here on RIM articles posting crap CONSTANTLY!!!   You, Max, Scroat, BringIt…  all of you douchers come out here to rip on RIM every chance you get..   so again FAIL.

Overall, your comment below (much like your life) = HUGE FAIL!!

  • Ian

If AT&T was offering the Bold 9900 , sales would be Much BETTER!! Damn you AT&T!!!!

  • Which way is Up?

The 9900/9930 really is a great phone with looks to match.

It handles calls well, messaging, email, FB app is okay, Twitter app is okay and that’s about it-which is exactly what I need. HOWEVER, web browsing still sucks (RIM deperately needs to send an update to the phone allowing it to auto resize when pinching to zoom into an article), the camera is okay, the video recorder is okay (3gp-so some issues playing back on other devices) but other than that, it is a solid phone and I am very pleased with it… To the point where if I left my Sensation at home and only had my 9930, I wouldn’t think twice about it.

  • numetheus

It is quite humorous to see all of the T-Mobile argue that they were sold out of Blackberry devices. That is real easy to do when stores only carry 5 or 10 devices because demand for them aren’t so high.

Can’t say I’m surprised. Every month that goes by, the contacts on my BBM list shrinks more and more with friends leaving for iPhone or Android. Still using my 9700 Bold, but I’d like the 9900. Played around with a powered-on unit at a T-Mobile retail store and became smitten with it.  But, at $300 after mail-in-rebate with T-Mobile, I find it absolutely ludicrous. As beautiful and solid built the device is, it is not close to warranting that kind of asking price. Given it lacks a lot of features other competing phones have (no auto-focus camera, no front-facing camera lens, BlackBerry’s lackluster App store, single-core processor), T-Mobile really should have capped the initial price with a new contract at $149.99. AT THE MOST.
