Microsoft to finally educate retail partners on Windows Phone

mobile

When Microsoft’s vendor partners shipped their first Windows Phone 7 devices last year, they hardly seemed to back up the launches with the kind of marketing efforts that might position the platform to succeed against established rivals like Android and iOS. Reportedly, “secret shoppers” from Microsoft have since been snooping in stores and discovering that sales staff were largely uneducated about the platform, often confusing it with the older Windows Mobile operating system. The Redmond-based company is trying a different tactic for its new Windows Phone Mango devices, however. In preparation for the upcoming release, Microsoft and HTC are training “hundreds” of sales staff on to use and sell the platform, head of Windows Phone marketing at Microsoft Achim Berg recently told Bloomberg. In addition, the company will also put more effort into its marketing campaigns according to the report. Microsoft’s latest Windows Phone Mango operating system is expected to be deployed to Windows Phone devices this fall alongside the release of a new batch of Mango smartphones.

Great news, I’m tired of going into cell pnone stores asking about WP7…only for the reps to only talk about Anroid or IOS.

Android and IOS are what bring in money of course they will sell you on those. Its not their fault you want an a WP7 for some odd reason

It wouldn’t hurt to release devices that actually work, at the retail level! Fake (dumby) phones are a complete turn-off, especially when there’s a functioning iPhone 4, with a giant (marketing) display (with info), surrounding it! Microsoft, RIM & Google need to spend less ad-dollars on “bogus” reviews & greedy-bloggers & start figuring out how consumers will use & enjoy their devices. NO ecosystem means NO sales, it’s that simple!

I was with you until you lumped Google in there….. you’ve got to be f***ing joking. IOS and android are not perfect but they both have a huge ecosystem and its really silly to put Google in the same category as rim and Microsoft.

I’ll be REAL interested in their market-share this time next year! If it doubles, I’ll be shocked (less than 2%, currently).

Verizon and Sprint currently have 1 device. TMobile has 2, but one actually IN store, At&t has 4, but 2 current.

I’ve gone to at&t where they actually show you the phone’s highlights. I’ve also gone to at&t’s where its all iPhone. Not their fault, but they used to just push iPhone.

I was at my local AT&T store recently and there was a microsoft employee there to check on how their products were selling in the store. One of the questions she asked the AT&T Reps was how many of them carried a windows phone and the answer was 0 out of 10 reps 12 if you include the store managers. I look forward to Mango but companies need to stop launching their new OS without basic features such as custom ringtones, default tethering ect. especially with Android and iOS doing so well you really can’t launch a crippled OS and expect Reps to use and push your phones.

This should have been a priority at the very beginning.

    Nope, still don’t care.

so why are you reading this post

  • just might work

Astroturf commenters arent quite getting it done, are they?

Training = 45 minutes of content, 39 of which are ‘to be released’ features followed by prize giveaways, followed by expense account subsidized adult beverages. The road to a 20 something year old retail sales force mindshare is paved in free crap and beer.

About f-ing time! If i walk into another store and have some stupid ass rep tries to sell me android or ios when i’m clearly asking about WP7 I’m ganna lose it.

I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use Meta Cent. c0m

They’ll need more than a Powerpoint deck full of callouts to encourage retailers to push their gear.

At launch, they spent all the training money on the Old Spice guy.

    Too little, too late :(

  • Yoyo

Train all you want, the end result will be the same no one will buy it and no one wants to sell it
