mobile

Verizon Wireless announced on Tuesday that it will offer the BlackBerry Torch 9850 on September 8th for $199.99 with a new two-year contract. The Torch 9850 offers a full 3.7-inch touchscreen display with an 800 x 480-pixel resolution, a 1.2GHz processor, support for global roaming in more than 200 countries, a 5-megapixel camera capable of recording 720p HD video and 16GB of storage. The Torch 9850 was first unveiled during a RIM event in Toronto on August 3rd where we published hands-on impressions of the phone. It is the best full-touchscreen smartphone RIM has sold and its browser is much improved, but the BlackBerry 7 operating still feels stale in comparison to Android, Windows Phone and iOS. About a year late with this device

My Droid Incredible has all of those specs(sans 0.2ghz) with a better camera. It is almost a year and a half old.

,,wow,.. I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for.

      Just 1 year?

    • Justin Lisenby

Actually, i’m thinking we should have seen this in 2008. It reminds me of an iPhone 3GS but with no apps and horrible OS. So, nothing like the iPhone.

  • zacamandapio

    Very nice device.
I’m still waiting for the AWS version.

Hey BlackBerry fans–in all seriousness, what is the attraction for a device like this besides corporate email that RIM did such a great job at?

With the Galaxy S II, DROID Bionic, etc, on the market soon, I can’t see where this device fits in–besides the corporate–world with this price tag.

    • Anonymous

Where does this device fit ? How about in a trash can ?

      • Anonymous

Maybe with people who need the best access to their email tools.  Not everybody wants to spend all day on their iPhone playing Angry Birds or staring at pictures of girls on there Droids that there little virgin eyes have no chance with.

those lame excuses never seem to get old..face it other phones do what BB does and does it just as good unless you work for a company needed extra sec..if the BB had there act together with size of ios apps or android im sure you would hate that and go back to a flip phone..a keyboard, blinky red light and email..wow your a grown up for sure..talk some more how grown up and mature the bb is?

    • zacamandapio

      ryan oakley,
I use a BlackBerry as a necessity.  I tried all the other platforms and they just don’t work for me.
So this device fits my needs.

    • Banofbros

Corporate email is HUGE – it runs business. I gave up my old Storm1 for a Thunderbolt and my emails sometimes take all day to get to me!!! With BB they were delivered in an instant.

I would love to get a new full screen BB Storm/torch, but like others have said, it’s a year or more behind the times in most of it’s other functions. Sorry RIM you failed again.

im confused with BGR’s take on Blackberry lol do they like them or not?

    • BB Addict

both….. for now… BGR are band wagon jumpers… they see that RIM could actually turn things around, thus, of late they have started to pepper positive spin stories; however, they do need to make it not obvious they are going PRO RIM by peppering in some negative stories…

As you see RIM make more headway, specifically with QNX phone leaks… you will see even more pro RIM news.  If RIM makes a full come back… BGR will have progressed back to a RIM supporting website within 12-16 months….

it will be subtle, but, if you pay attention you will see the trends..

      • Anonymous

oh iv seen the trend, i see them writing why they will stick with there blackberry and then why they dont like blackberry….its confusing!

  • Fenixtexan

How come this looks like an LG optimus?

  • Anonymous

Who gives a flying rat’s ass about this story?????????? WHERE THE HELL IS THE GALAXY S II ON THE VERIZON NETWORK ??????????

    • zacamandapio

      Not coming at all.

  • Anonymous

If anyone reading this plans on buying this phone I also have a flux capacitator for sell cheap!! Contact me for details.

….. and it will be 0.99¢ on September 9th with a BOGO free offer: True Story™®©

  • JoNES.R,

…BLACKBERRY has been on LIFE-SUPPORT for some time now.

  • adams

Cue RIM haters explaining why their platforms are so superior and how people who still buy BBs are the biggest fucking idiots in the world.

Seriously, why do you people care what other people like? You guys are worse than religious fanatics who do the same thing.

    • Anonymous

      Group bullying?

I am looking forward to seeing RIM QNX phones. I hope they don’t drop the ball because it would be nice to have another OS option.

      • Banofbros

I agree. However, I don’t have any confidence in RIM’s current management.

    • Anonymous

      Yo momma.

      • Anonymous

That was an awesome TV show

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=63900900 Sean Eppel

50 bucks more than the Sprint version?  Nice job verizon.  I think that with the current shape of the smartphone market, if it doesn’t have dual-core and/or 4G  it shouldn’t be demanding a 200 price point.

  • Max

Verily, who gives a flying fck?

    • zacamandapio

      Que?

  • Mr One 2

I was gonna wait for this, lol somebody slap me! !

  • NfamousCJ

My take on it after messing with it is that it really is a nice phone. It’s definitely not a Storm 3 but what the Storm 2 should have been; meaning it feels like it would have contended well with the likes of the DX and Incredible.

RIM is also launching during a scary launch time. BB’s don’t excel during back to school sales or even winter holidays with the gaming powerhouses iOS and Android present.

Will it be able to compete with the iPhone 5, Bionic, Vigor and Nexus all looming just around the corner? 2 months ago during the summer slump would have been a much more effective launch choice but RIM has too much pride and still feels their device can compete with the big dogs.

  • Hollaholla

It seems like the price of this device is going to drastically halt its sales. If I was to launch at a price range of $100, I would personally consider buying it..
At this price range, I will definitely buy WP7 mango

  • David

Just 3G??    LOL!   Gotta hand it to RIM–they don’t want to be at the forefront of technology….no siree!!
