Toshiba unveils AT200, the thinnest Android tablet yet

Tablets

During the IFA trade show in Berlin on Thursday, Toshiba unveiled the AT200, an Android Honeycomb tablet that will no doubt compete directly Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1. It measures just 7.7mm thick, .9mm thinner than the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which should make it the thinnest Android tablet when it hits store shelves. The AT200 is equipped with a 10.1-inch display with a 1280 x 800-pixel resolution, a microUSB port, a microSD slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a micro-HDMI port, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera and a two-megapixel front-facing camera for video chats. Toshiba has yet to announce a release date or pricing for the AT200. Read on for the full press release.

Toshiba unveils its world-class, ultra-thin, ultra-light tablet

Toshiba AT200 tablet built to exceed expectations at only 7.7mm thin and 558g with full 10.1″ screen

September 2011 – Toshiba Europe GmbH unveiled an exciting new product today – the ultra-thin 25.7cm (10.1”) AT200 tablet. Despite measuring only 7.7mm from front to back, the Toshiba AT200 delivers a broad range of essential ports and interfaces. It offers an amazing wide-view display for comfortable content consumption plus full web browsing capabilities to meet the preferred usage for tablets. Every bit as powerful as it is stylish and robust, this tablet is built to exceed expectations. The Toshiba AT200 will be available in the fourth quarter of 2011 in Europe.

Ultra-thin, ultra-powerful

“The new ultra-thin 25.7cm (10.1″) tablet Toshiba AT200, featuring Androidâ„¢ 3.2, Honeycomb, is the latest in a long line of Toshiba products that are masterfully engineered”, said Marco Perino, General Manager DS Digital Products Division. “With a thickness of only 7.7mm and a weight of just 558g, the elegant Toshiba AT200 is highly mobile yet extremely smart and powerful.”

All essentials on-board

To connect with other devices the ultra-slim tablet comes with all essential interfaces and ports onboard: amongst them micro-USB, micro-SD, Wi-Fi™ and Bluetooth®. The micro-HDMI ®-port allows streaming HD content to the large screen of a TV. Front and back HD cameras are ideal for video conferencing and augmented reality applications.

High-quality media consumption – no matter where you are

The Toshiba AT200 allows users to enjoy videos at home and while out and about. It features a brilliant 25.7cm (10.1″) high-definition screen that displays pictures with crisp colours and in full detail.

Despite being ultra-thin, it allows up to eight hours of video consumption.

Sound quality at its best

To complement the first-class video capabilities the new Toshiba tablet with stereo speakers allows for a high quality sound playback. The Adaptive Sound Device Enhancer’s sophisticated algorithm maximises sound quality to achieve a quality that normally only can be found with large speakers. Plus, a technology called Sound Masking Equalizer identifies and enhances sound that is being masked or distorted by surrounding noise. The result is a well- balanced, powerful playback of music and video sounds even under high ambient noise levels.

Maybe they should focus on making smoother operating tablets instead of only racing to be the thinnest.

it’s interesting that they don’t even try to compare to the iPad2 which is 8.8 mm.   by locking themselves into the ‘android tablet’ market’, they appear to be only fighting for the race to the bottom of the ‘others’ list…  thinnest, cheapest, most gimmicks.

It’s BGR that avoids the comparison not Toshiba’s press release. Fortunately BGR’s editors dont control what consumers will do when they get into best buy and play around with the various tablets including the ipad2. See one of the main reasons BGR liked the ipad2 is because it was super thin and light.  But when talking about android tablets, those things are apparently no longer important, and they focus instead on other things like less tablet apps for android, even though the bulk of consumer tablet use is browsing the web.  See in BGR land all android tablets suck (even though they’ve taken away a third of the tablet market from apple already this year and may very well even out sell or surpass the ipads by the turn of the year), they constantly write about how awful they are, how no one wants them and how ipads are manna from heaven.  The reality is that there are several honeycomb tablets that are very good, and in many cases the best option for the general consumer.

There is no tablet market only an iPad market. Android tabs will go the way of the HP touch pad soon.

I tried them all out before I ended up choosing the Thrive (AT100). The iPad felt hollow and fragile, like I would break it during normal use. My thrive feels rugged, but not to the point of bulkiness. I’m actually surprised by the Android App Market. Having an iPhone I have always considered their app store above and beyond, and they still do have the best selection, but Android is quickly catching up. I think Android is on the way up all around in the market, while Apple is on the way down- especially with the passing of Jobs. I think the turning point is right around the corner.

I suggest you call up Tim Cook and tell him to tell the rest of crApple them apple’s. Have a nice day.

        ……….
        ……………
Well let me see just off the top of my head let’s talk Stalin and 20 million (that people know of) who died under his rule. Let’s talk Castro and the various people he had murdered or jailed who politically challenged him. Let’s talk about the various cuban’s who fled their own country because of Castro and his pig government. Let’s talk about the one time splitting of Germany and the Berlin Wall and the various East Germans who were killed trying to escape communist rule. Let’s talk Poland and the various citizens who disappeared during it’s little stint behind the iron curtain. Let’s talk about the people who are Jewish Muslim Catholic and Orthodox who also disappeared under communist rule. Let’s talk about the Khamir Rouge and the one million plus Cambodians who were murdered under their short little stint of destruction. Let’s talk about the Maoist era of China and the millions who died of starvation. Let’s talk about North Korea who has one of the most brutal human rights violation records in the world. While were on the subject of North Korea let’s also factor in that there are Korean families who still haven’t seen family members since the Korean Civil War split the country in two. You want me to throw out a few other examples? I haven’t even touched on what the commie pigs have done in South America and Africa.

So you don’t buy any consumer electronics and make this same statement about every manufacturer, right? Ok, just checking!

If you think that 100% of all electronics come from sweatshops you’re a bigger cool aid swilling retard then I thought was possible. Next time try doing some research before you open that smelly shit hole you call a mouth.

Being thin is great…but if it flexes because of it, then whats the point?  (oops…is that what she said?)

…and if Toshiba’s thinnest tablet is not priced at least $100-150 dollars less than the iPad it will not sell in the US.  You can flood the market with tablets all you want, these comapanies unfortunately are not getting the free pub Apple devices receive by word of mouth and stores like Best Buy who sway people toward certain devices.  Look at the PC Market for example, if all Windows based laptops and desktops were as expensive as Macs they would not sell in the volume that they do.  Tablet makers need the perception to be that Apple tablets are priced out of the market for everyday consumers and make them cheaper. Sure their will be a loss but they develop a loyal following.  Look at the Xbox 360 and the PS3 when they first launched they were sold for a loss and MS and Sony made money off games etc. These tablet makers need to buy a clue.

    • MDR

      got to start somewhere

      • http://www.TheGuruReview.net TGR

Yeah, not at the very top in reference to pricing.

    • delusion ftl

The reason pc’s are much less expensive than mac’s has several variables, but the one that plays out most is competitive price pressure.  If hp, dell, toshiba, samsung, could roll out laptops with OSX on them, you’d be able to pick them up for 400-500 dollars as well.

With the tablet market growing into itself, there isn’t a lot of competitive pressure yet. Rest assured when push comes to shove android tablets will be less expensive.  I think you’ll start seeing decent (not top of the line) tablets start running around in the 200-300 range soon. (If apple doesn’t sue them out of existence or into pricey licensing fees first)
