Samsung will ‘never’ buy webOS, CEO says

mobile

During the IFA trade show in Berlin on Friday, Samsung Electronics CEO Choi Gee Sung addressed rumors and speculation that Samsung was considering purchasing webOS from HP. Choi said Samsung would “never” make the purchase, according to Bloomberg. “It’s not right that acquiring an operating system is becoming a fashion,” he said. Samsung Mobile already has its own mobile operating system called bada and just released version 2.0. It also sells smartphones running Android and Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. HP, which recently announced that it is ostensibly killing off the mobile operating system, has been working with other technology firms to license webOS. While Samsung may not buy webOS outright, the Korean-based company has held talks to license webOS for new smartphones, Bloomberg said, but it is still unclear how those discussions turned out. Considering the success Samsung is currently enjoying with Android and bada, however, we’re not sure HP will be able to convince Samsung that there is any real value in adopting an OS that it couldn’t even sell to users itself.

How is this a surprise to anyone?

Yes. Samsung also did not realize their in-house designed “bada” o/s is a piece o’crap

Good post, but let’s be clear: HP *could* have sold it to users if they were interested in selling it to users. HP’s challenge is in convincing a buyer or licensee that the mobile market is still ripe for a third-placer (it is) despite HP’s leadership being wholly terrified of any non-enterprise investment.

you’re only in 3rd place if you continue running the race.   WP7 for lack of anything else has the largest SW company and the largest mobile phone maker in the world… combined they you have consider their momemtum.    If for nothing else, you’ve got OS HW and ‘ecosystem’ all controlled by one ‘duo-rporation’.

Samsung has no synergy between device, desktop, content, or the web.  The iPod ‘halo’ is the gateway point for most entry iPhone users….  ”I have an iPod Nano… you mean, all my media ‘just works’ on my phone?”  (then comes the apps, then you think… Hey… that iMac looks pretty good…”

Think of “I have Win7 on my desk… you mean my phone can just suck up all my stuff and it ‘just works’?”    As long as Ballmer doesn’t Eff it up, MS/Nok can easily slide into 3rd place in 5 quarters.

RIM is on a downslide… what is QNX on a BB device?  just a virtual android box?
      LG is out
Moto and Google are 15 months away from anything,

Bada?  is there a plan for that
Android?  with Moto and Goog making ‘reference’ platforms?

Samsung should consider all options.   If the rumors were true, it was that HP couldn’t build the HW.  WebOS was solid.  Samsung has proven it can build decent HW.   And ‘owning’ your OS makes your HW all the better.

Yes, I always wanted to multi-task on my printer.

Oh…wait…you’re not talking THAT webOS, are you? No, you’re talking the User Interface for webOS! Yes, the UI that cost more than a BILLION dollars! Yes…coming soon!

What success has bada provided Samsung?

    Apple
    google
    microsoft

Everything revolves around 3 and lets be honest. HP does not have what it takes to dethrone any of the companies mentioned.

How the board/hp determined it was a great move is beyond me.

Will somebody please buy webOS and put it out of its misery so that it won’t drag down anymore companies or put carriers in the red. Mattel should buy them so they can continue making little crappy failed toy phones and tablets for the kiddies.
