Windows Phone will be No. 2 smartphone OS by 2015 according to Gartner, IDC

According to research reports from Gartner and IDC, Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system will grab about 20% of the smartphone market by 2015, enough to propel the OS past Apple’s iOS platform to take the No. 2 spot globally. Research firm Gartner believes Android will have a 49% market share in 2015, followed by Windows Phone at 19.5%, and Apple’s iOS growth will slow so much that it will only maintain a 17% share. IDC believes Windows Phone will have a 20.3 percent share in 2015. During the IFA trade show in Berlin on Friday, Windows Phone marketing head Achim Berg told Bloomberg those Windows Phone growth estimates are conservative. “This is a completely new platform, it takes time,” Berg said. “It took time with Android, it took time with Apple. We have to show that we’re very capable and that we have the fastest and easiest phone.” Gartner suggests Windows Phone’s growth is expected to surge thanks to help from big-name manufacturers such as HTC. Read on for more, including a statement from HTC’s president of Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

“We’re seeing an extremely positive response [to the operating system],” HTC’s Europe, Middle East and Africa president Florian Seiche told Bloomberg. “We’re now thinking that this year is a great time to get that momentum accelerated, to reach out to a broader group of customers.” HTC revealed its latest Windows Phone Mango handsets, the Radar and Titan, on September 1st. The analyses from IDC and Gartner aren’t the only such reports that project explosive growth for Microsoft’s emerging mobile platform. Pyramid Research is even more bullish on the OS, having said in May that Windows Phone will surpass Android’s market share as soon as 2013.

These stupid analysts make their prediction on the simple assumption that Nokia’s marketshare for Symbian will morph into WP7. That will NOT happen!l  WP7 just doesn’t have any traction at all. Look how Nokia is closing its physical and online stores across Europe. Look how empty they are in Asia. Look at Nokia’s non-existing share in USA. Nokia is dying fast and the people who bought Symbian will not go 100% to WP7, not a chance in hell. If Pyramid is right and WP7 will be the biggest and even pass Android in 2013 then how come P7 isn’t gaining any momentum whatsoever ?  I think even Bada will be bigger than WP7 in 2013. WP7 will at best get around 5-8% in 2013.

Sorry to say that all this assumes that Apple will do nothing to defend ther market share.

Looking at the history of the iPod I am afraid that will not be the case come Q4 2011.

Apple know very well how to sell a cheaper iPhone. And when they do Microsoft and Google will suffer.

    no it won’t.

LOL!  This is funny just because it will have the iPhonies pissing themselves yet again (get some depends -you’ll need them!), but it is absurd.  Win D’Oh’s phone will be what it is now.  Crap.

WP7 is already great, and it will only get better over time. Just sit back, and watch the growth happen!  App store is over 30k now.

Methinks the analysts have been soundly compensated by Micro$soft.

These analysts read tea leaves and quite poorly too. It amazes me anyone would put stock in anything they say.

I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use PennyOrder.comONLY

Wow, a lot of MS haters here… Why can’t we let this analysts be? Let them project whatever they want. What’s important is what product fits us and not what is no. 1 in 2015. I will be glad to use whatever phone or tablet is bestselling in 2015 as long as it fits my needs and not dictated by trend. But if not, I could also settle for the least known platform…. At least, I have “exclusivity”…. Chill, everyone…

Considering the long wait involved between releases and updates, I tend to doubt Windows Phone will be #2 by 2015.  Their development cycle is too slow to be competitive.

  • Thanggle

I certainly hope so.  Fan or hater of Microsoft, everyone should want Phone 7 to succeed.  The end result of that would be a more dynamic and competitive marketplace, which translates to better products and services at lower prices.  Only RETARDS(Apple fangirls, aka fanboys who are gay) would expect otherwise.  LOL

What are these guys smoking? What do they think Apple will be doing during this period, sitting on their hands? Apple could care less about the “nerd ” segment of the market it’s really small compared to the every day “consumer “. By the time win 8 is released Apple will be taking their own core customers in a new and exciting en more interesting direction. Please stop thinking like a nerd it’s not rocket science!

I see a problem right here.. why won’t iOS grow beyond 17%?
so in 4 years time the market is going to stay the way it is according to Gartner/IDC.. in my opinion either they are high on drugs or paid by some company.. no one can predict whats the market share going to be next year or so but these guys can predict that apple is not going to grow and Android is going stay at 49% but i do agree that Windows Phone might get a bump as Nokia is going produce ton of phones with Windows Phone..

The end result: i don’t believe this analysis to be accurate.

I am not sure whether the research was done after the google and motorola deal..
If it was done taking this factor into consideration, the result would indicate WP7 surpassing all others..
Afterall, the google and motorola deal pissed off a lot of android manufacturers and these manufacturers are getting ready to reduce their dependency on the android platform..
WP7 is obviously the boat to swtich
