HTC Sensation and EVO 3D revealed to be spying on users [updated]

mobile

First Apple, Google and Microsoft were accused of tracking user locations and now it appears HTC’s Sensation and EVO 3D smartphones are spying on their owners. According to user TrevE from InfectedROM, a recent Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update from HTC added a little something special to the source code of Carrier IQ (CIQ), an Android component. CIQ is not new; it is part of Android and used on most devices to send data back to carriers about your smartphone. However, the source code on the EVO 3D and Sensation reportedly now has a “User Behavior Logging” function that is capable of tracking how Sensation and EVO 3D owners use their smartphones in greater detail. Read on for more.

Updated with official comment from Sprint below.

According to the report, CIQ uploads this user behavior data automatically in the background, although it is unclear if the data is sent to HTC or to the carrier. So what kind of private information can it learn about you? According to Phandroid, the new code enables CIQ to keep track of users’ locations, note what applications they have installed and how much each one is used, identify what processes users currently have open and more. TrevE thinks HTC could also use the information to detect rooted phones. As we told you during the original “Locationgate” scandals, however, you’ve already agreed to share this information.

UPDATE: The following comment was provided to BGR via email by Sprint spokesman Jason Gertzen:

Carrier IQ is used to understand what problems customers are having with our network or devices so we can take action to improve service quality.

It collects enough information to understand the customer experience with devices on our network and how to devise solutions to use and connection problems. We do not and cannot look at the contents of messages, photos, videos, etc., using this tool.

UPDATE: The following statement was provided to BGR via email by an HTC spokesperson:

HTC, like most manufacturers, has an opt-in error reporting function built in to our devices. If your phone experiences an error, you have the option of ‘Telling HTC’ so we can make improvements to our phones. Details about this are in our privacy policy on each device and in order for data to be collected, you have to opt-in. If you do opt-in, we protect your privacy by de-identifying and encrypting the data. HTC is committed to protecting your privacy and that means a commitment to clear opt-in/opt-out as the standard for collecting any information we need to serve you better.

    Well, that just sucks

Its nothing new. A lot of HTC’s products have an APK that tracks what users do, how much time is spent on an application, etc. I personally really enjoy HTC’s hardware but their HTC Sense ontop of Android is a little much. A lot of custom ROM developers for HTC devices remove this application that tracks you and your phone use. Sadly most users do not root or flash custom ROM’s. That is their loss I guess.

Pro Tip for Sensation or Evo 3D users: If you are going to root your phone and install a custom rom, make sure that you have data and wifi disabled when rooting your phone. After you are rooted with a custom recovery install a custom rom without this junk in it. That way your carrier or whomever gets the data doesn’t know you are rooted.

Typical Apple move stealing data, can’t DROID do anythig original???

      • http://twitter.com/GRZLA Grizzly Atoms

This application isn’t present in all Android builds. It is only in HTC’s builds of Android called HTC Sense. This is all HTC and has nothing to do with Google.

Droid is a brand name for phones. ANDROID is the phone os. Just an fyi

        You’ve been trolled.

Apple never stole data.  They did forget to trim the file that keeps track of tower location (ie, where you are), which is bad enough, but they never uploaded the data.  It really does not fit their business plan, they sell hardware, not data.

Google’s entire business is selling user data.  The more they collect the more money they make.  They built Android just so they would not get locked out of the huge phone market.  Others may wish to make a quick buck as well.  Android users (and WP7?) give out data all the time, and the usual response is this is OK, because they have agreed to it.

      Great advice! Thanks! :D

Most Android users don’t root for the same reason people don’t buy a new car and immediately replace the brake pads and wiring harnesses: They expect their new purchase to work correctly from the start, not after it has been lobotomized and reset.

For those who wish to go to that effort, it is great that the opportunity exists, but those who prescribe rooting as the solution to problems which should not have existed in the first place are somewhere between arrogant and delusional. There is no reason a high-cost flagship Android phone should not work properly out of the box.

HTC: Getting worse by the day!

  • Matt

It’s not just HTC, it’s Sprint, I have had to use stripped roms on both my Evo and My GF’s Epic. I do get almost en extra day of battery life on both phones now.

I’m surprised that Carrier IQ is not just a Sprint issue.

Well, this was the nail in the koffin for me. Good bye HTC. Great hardware, amazing software, creepy habits.

And all the Fandroids gave apple so much hell for tracking data (and not even transmitting it).. This in comparison is way more of a security concern for those nuts…

    Think those Koreans will sue?

I’m curious as to why my comment was removed?! I merely pointed out that this story is BS. The supposed tracking is actually part of Sense that can be shut off in settings. One only needs to go to settings-about phone-Tell HTC and uncheck Report usage to HTC.

Because how else will they draw page-clicks?  If people weren’t lazy and read what they were agreeing to, there wouldn’t be a need for this.

Carrier IQ isn’t “a part of Android”. It’s an addition mandated by AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. VZW doesn’t require it, yet.

  • Anonymous

I’d trust Apple with my location data LONG before I trust HTC with detailed usage data.

    • Anonymous

I trust no one with my personal information. If some mega corp wants my personal info then fine cut me a cheque. Until they do that they can all screw off nobody gets anything for nothing so why should these carriers get my information for free? I bought the hardware and signed the contract guaranteeing that carrier x gets my hard earned money every month for the next two years. As far as I’m concerned that’s enough if some hardware company or carrier wants more aka my personal info they can screw off it’s none of their business.

  • Aj

And people wonder why I stick with RIM. Look at it this way. Google gives Android away. If you get something for free, YOU are the product.

I run Blackberry maps just so Google can’t locate me.

  • Vaughn Melson

If you don’t think every manufacturer does this then I guess you are just a little nieve!  Credit card companies have been doing this since the 80′s and have been making big bets on wall street with the data.  I say let them track…I have nothing to hide and maybe it could be used for good things as well (let you mind wonder).
