Sprint ‘applauds’ DOJ attempt to block AT&T/T-Mobile merger

Breaking

Sprint’s senior vice president of government affairs Vonya B. McCann issued the following statement in response to the Department of Justice’s attempt to block AT&T’s planned $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA:

The DOJ today delivered a decisive victory for consumers, competition and our country. By filing suit to block AT&T’s proposed takeover of T-Mobile, the DOJ has put consumers’ interests first. Sprint applauds the DOJ for conducting a careful and thorough review and for reaching a just decision – one which will ensure that consumers continue to reap the benefits of a competitive U.S. wireless industry. Contrary to AT&T’s assertions, today’s action will preserve American jobs, strengthen the American economy, and encourage innovation.

AT&T responded to the DOJ earlier on Wednesday noting it will ask for an expedited hearing, and said “the facts will prevail in court.” FCC Chairman Julius also said the FCC has ‘serious concerns‘ about the impact of the merger.

And once again, the 10 people using Sprint feel they should beat their chest about this.

Yeah government getting involved with private business, and we applaud freedom in this country.

If you don’t like the merger, don’t use the company.

      You have options besides AT&T.

      • Anonymous

THAT”S THE POINT! .  .  . if it went through there would be LESS OPTIONS. Resulting in higher prices and less products/innovation because there will be LESS Competition . . . GET IT?

      • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

That’s not how freedom works. You just described a nanny state.

      • http://www.sakurawalker.com iEric

Oh I get it.  It’s not the government’s right to say “how much” choice we need to have as consumers.  AT&T is not and will not be a monopoly if the merger goes through so find something else to do.  Get the fuck out of the way government and worry more about jobs.

        GET IT?

      • Anonymous

@iEric:disqus The only GSM provider in America.. Lmao if you have money to give away you can paypal it to me bro.. AT&T doesn’t give a damn about you.. Not saying that Sprint or VZW do either but at least they pretend.. First it was the “crushing iphone usage” now it will be the lack of Tmo spectrum.. They have spectrum and there are other ways to get more besides taking out the only other GSM company in the country..

      • felipe peko

You used to have no options until the government got involved.
You used to have more options, and the government didn’t get involved.
Now when you are beginning to have no options AGAIN, government is getting involved.
Not sure if i follow your problem against freedom of monopoly.

      • http://www.sakurawalker.com iEric

No options with what?  home phones?  cell phones?  When something is first invented, the inventor is the only option.  I understand that, I know until the deregulation of the phone companies provided options and better prices.  That is not the case here.  There are still options.

      • Baller

If the merger went thru it would not be a monopoly. Now the cable companies have a monopoly. For the most part you only have 1 cable provider in any city you live. Thats nationwide. Sprint is jealous cuz they couldnt afford tmobile. What bank was going to let them borrow 30 billion to make this purchase. They cant sell bonds cuz no one would want to buy them. Sprint is so stupid that they dont realize if the merger went thru they would have prob gained about 3-5 million customers who would have left at&t. The merger is going to go thru even with todays actions and I’ll tell you why,: First of all Sprint is going to get the Iphone 5 so they wont be able to use the argument that they cant get the best phones and second because they are getting the iphone they are going to have to raise their rates  and they wont be able to blame the merger. The justice department always does this when they are seeking concessions during a merger,

Your Teddy Roosevelt, a REAL Republican, would have supported this move.  There is a thing called the Sherman Act, you know.

      • http://www.sakurawalker.com iEric

I lean right, but Teddy Roosevelt was a left leaning Republican, and I am not a fan of his politics.

The Sherman Act was put in to limit monopolies, this merger does not create a monopoly.

They didn’t block sirius and XM from mergering, but they are going to stop two cellphone companies.

Here we have, verizon, AT&T, sprint, T-mobile, TracFone, MetroPCS, US Cellular, Cricket, Alltel, and probably more.

If you don’t like the merger too bad, don’t use them.

      • Anonymous

Republicans now disowning their great heritage.  I would like to once again vote for the party of Lincoln, but until the politics normalizes, I have to keep pulling the lever for D.

You’re looking at the wrong markets.  Satellite radio isn’t the entire industry, it’s commercial radio and satellite radio to form the radio industry.  In those terms, XM + Sirius wasn’t all that big.

As for wireless, there are 4 national carriers, with some leftover regional carriers.  All others, including some you mentioned, resell their services.

If this merger goes through, it won’t me just AT&T & T-mobiles’s customer’s that are affected, the entire competitive landscape will change for the worse.

      • http://www.sakurawalker.com iEric

First we are looking at a bad economy, and AT&T is promising 5,000 new jobs.

        Second, nobody stopped nextel/Sprint.

Third, you say this is a change for the worse.  You are speculating on what grounds?  Yeah, there will be “slightly” less competition, but there are still 2 large companies to compete with: Sprint and Verizon.  You’re free to create your own cellular company if you want to create more competition and think you can do a good job at it.

As for now, T-mobile is having issues, and is slowly bleeding to death.  This might be the only option they have to revive themselves.  They have good customer service and good plans, but that’s pricey and they aren’t profiting.

      • Anonymous

No d***bag… It’s government getting involved with private business to LOOK AFTER it’s CITIZENS and CONSUMER RIGHTS.

      • mike vruvas

These are not pivate businesses, these are public companies.

      • http://www.sakurawalker.com iEric

You think they are looking after your rights?  The government is the one who makes things so expensive in the first place with taxes and over regulation.

Again, AT&T and T-Mobile aren’t the last two cell companies in the US.

      • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

Bulls**t!  Why can’t the government just say, “Okay, but this merger cannot result into a service price hike”?  I don’t get why people don’t understand that this merger is a result of Deutsche Telekom simply not wanting to be in the US market, as earlier reports revealed, but the press just seemed to overlook that detail.

Though we don’t really live in a country of the people, for the people and by the people any longer, we certainly don’t want to live in a country where private corporate business interests run it more than our own!

The government by the way the only “We The People” representatives we have to ensure we don’t end up living in a Fascist Society where the Corporate Military Machine and it’s bureaucrats don’t have all the power. I’ll take the freedom to choose from competition any day over being forced to buy my phone coverage from one resurrected Ma Bell with Self Corporate Business Interests!  ….so just keep your Corporate Fascist Dictator run ideas to yourself, thank you!!!

Yes…… we applaud FREEDOM for People….. NOT inanimate self serving Corporate Greed and their tyrannical methods of eliminating competition!

Will you please google AT&T and learn their history.. Then you can comeback and argue

      • http://www.sakurawalker.com iEric

Their history doesn’t matter, and I know their history.  Bottom line is this is government overstepping it’s bounds.

Whether or not this is good or bad for the mobile phone business or consumers it doesn’t matter.

      • Anonymous

@ iEric — AT&T is promising 5,000 new jobs??? LOL

oh boy… people really do believe everything the media feeds them….

Let me ask you this…once the merger happens, what will happen to the 20,000 T Mobile employees?
You guessed it…. Pink slips :)

      • http://www.sakurawalker.com iEric

Whether or not they do create new jobs.  I am not against the government stopping the merger, because it’s not their role.

AT&T isn’t promising 5,000 new jobs out of thin air, they are talking about bringing overseas jobs back to the USA.  I am not sure how, maybe since T-Mobile is German based, they are bringing that portion to the USA.

Regardless, they are offering new jobs and the government has no legal right to block this merger.

      • http://twitter.com/derrickisonline Derrick -Lex-

iEric:  That is the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard!  So what happens when all the carriers get bought up by a single carrier and your prices skyrocket since you only have one choice?  But what else can we expect from a guy named iEric.

      • http://www.sakurawalker.com iEric

Prices skyrocketing? Really?  If AT&T raises their prices too much people will switch to Sprint/Nextel or Verizon…or even a pre-paid service.   Therefore cutting their own throat.  Your logic is stupid.  You make it sound like AT&T is the only company out there that is controlling prices and T-mobile is keeping them in check.

      • Anonymous

If this merger goes through and you need or want GSM service you WON’T have any options beside AT&T. This is a case where the government should be involved to proctect the American Consumer. You, like other Republicans, think that big corporations should be able to do anything they want without any oversight or regulation in the mistaken belief that they will create jobs and boost the economy. Then you complain when these same companies pollute the environment, market unsafe products, practice discrimination, fix prices, ship your job overseas and cause a global financial meltdown.

    • Plazmic Flame

Sprint applauds the cock-block, lol, haters…

  • Anonymous

The DoJ hasn’t delivered a decisive victory. All they’ve done is step into the arena. If they successfully block the merger, then we can talk about how they’re the second coming of Mother Teresa. Well, except for the Porto 80 clusterfuck, of course.

  • http://twitter.com/lennyj17 Lenny James

Hesse is the MAN! His taking the lead to block this merger is what sealed the deal…..When Hesse speaks people listen…simple as that……

    • Anonymous

Hesse isn’t “The Man”, he’s just a businessman who’s hoping that the acquisition doesn’t go through so T-Mo will go out of business and he can try to buy some of their spectrum for a discounted price and they can TRY and roll out a LTE network like everyone else.  He also realizes that if this passes, Virgin Mobile will get bigger and Sprint will get smaller and he’ll lose his job.

      • http://twitter.com/lennyj17 Lenny James

Please if it wasn’t for Hesse making a stand this deal was as good as in the books…..Nothing else spoke as loudly to DOJ or FCC….

        Hesse FTW!

      • Y4j2005

Just so you know, Sprint already owns Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile. Their ownly short lived pre-paid service was Trump Mobile. Also, Sprint decided to pass on the aquicition of T-Mobile because they don’t want to go through the hassle of crossing a CDMA network with a GSM network again since it was a fail with Nextel. If anything, they are going to buy out Clearwire to expand their network and convert to LTE.

  • http://twitter.com/lennyj17 Lenny James

Well those 10 people just got the US Government to shoot down one of the biggest mega telecom mergers ever….Those 10 Sprint people must carry some mighty big sticks.

AT&T just knew they had this one in the bag….LMAO!

    • Anonymous

Or they are just looking at it more thoroughly.. Read then comment

  • http://twitter.com/lennyj17 Lenny James

    Dup!

  • mike vruvas

That’s funny. A year ago SPRINT wanted to buy T-Mobile! But they are so burdened with debt their shareholders would melt down.

  • Dlopresti

It was OK when Sprint wanted to merge with T-Mobile, but not OK for AT&T to?

    • PlanB

Apples and oranges.  Market share for one is no where near the other. So yes.

      • mike vruvas

Market share? Verizons WAS the #2 carrier, they purchased Alltel who was the #5 carrier not far behind Tmobile. Verizon then BECOMES the #1 player, and it’s BECAUSE of the purchase of Alltel. They didn’t even have a good excuse like spectrum! The DOJ didn’t blink a eye!

      • Mmmkay

You also had a republican administration in office back then. Big difference.

      • stickydroid

Alltel was in 29 billion in debt…and were sinking fast…I was a legacy customer with them…it was a blessing Verizon had the cash to buy them…plus VZW had to divest a few markets to att.. and left some markets alltel to keep competition….

  • Wl5991

If that meger went thru then plans go up big time. Consumer wins, all for the better. End Quote.

  • http://www.slymiser.com speener

As an AT&T user – I had hoped that this merger would help fix AT&Ts crappy service, but honestly, if it doesn’t go through – I’m on my way to Verizon once my contract ends.

  • Antonioperez500

So a company who advertises itself as the low cost option for mobile service is against a merger in which they argue will result in higher prices for the consumer. If this was their real concern than they would be excited to here their other low priced competition has just been purchased, because now you will have quite a few price conscious consumers flocking to you to save a buck. This leads me to believe that they are worried that AT&T might be telling the truth when they said this will lower prices on their mobile service. Plus sprint is just upset because they were planning to be bought out in a few years and it definitely would not get approved if this merger goes through.

    • jim anus

wow someone who actually uses there brain, i give you a round of applause good sir.

  • Anonymous

I think the merger IS a bad idea. I was especially insulted by AT&T’s “bait” of “bringing back” 5000 call center jobs. Thanks a lot- 5000 more minimum wagers with headsets in a cubicle is what makes America the economic powerhouse it is today.

Ma Bell only wants it all back.

    • Anonymous

I’d I’m not mistaken call center pay starts at roughly 13 an hour.but hey what do I know I only worked dirt the company for 4 years.. Ohhh and that doesn’t include benefits or 401k which takes more burden off the govt

    • Baller

it’s funny how idiots like you talk about things when they don’t know shit. I’ve worked in a call center for one of the wireless carriers for 4 yrs and I’m making $20.00 an hr and that doesn’t include our quarterly bonus. they contribute to my 401k and I will have a pension when I retire. so take ur minimum wage comment and shove it up ur ass. go back into ur moms basement.

      • Dgdmx

If I was in my Mom’s basement, I sure as hell would be less likely to work in a frikkin call center. Unless you’re doing some truly trained or critical work, you ain’t makin’ no $20 an hour handling customer calls.

      • Baller

i make 19.875 / $795 a week to be exact. I don’t do critical work unless you want to call customer service critical. Look I know $795 a week is not a lot of money but it is decent money. It’s more than your stupid ass minimum wage comment and its more than most average people. Unless you currently work for one of the carriers its just better for you to keep your mouth shut. And if you do work for one of the carriers and are making minimum wage than you are a fuckin idiot…. I will say this, contracted vendor call center reps who dont work directly for the carriers start at about 10.00 an hr. But if you work directly for a carrier you start at about 13.00 an hr.

    • Anonymous

Exactly, if they even gave a shit about creating more US jobs they would bring those 5000 workers back now.

      • Baller

Just so you know pretty much all of AT&T call benter jobs are in the US. They have hired more US workers and canceled their outsourced contracts. They do outsource some of their customer service jobs, but to vendors with call centers based in the US.

  • Antonioperez500

But that is 5000 people who can be buying their family grocerys instead of sitting on the couch collecting Welfare saying all the jobs are over seas. Minimum wage or not it gets the country out of debt by funneling new money in the system.

    • Jim Davis

Do you really think that there would be a net increase of 5000 jobs?  What about all those people at T-Mobile that get sacked once the merger goes through?  T-Mobile currently employs 42,000 people.  Do you really think that AT&T will keep all of them?

      • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

They said they were.  So they would have to for at least a while.

      • Solocup

Yeah- especially after they run Sprint out of business- that wont cost us any jobs….

  • http://www.sk1wbw.wordpress.com Wayne Williams

I thought Sprint wanted to buy TMobile at first.  Right?

  • Cer

Oh Sprint, you sly dog. Complaining about a lack of competition while consistently increasing your rates.

At least Verizon and AT&T don’t beat around the bush. Maybe you should do something to differentiate yourselves, like you used to.

I love how every is saying how much of a monopoly this would be when cable companies like Comcast, charter are the real monopolies. For many states you only have one cable provider period.

  • jim anus

who cares what sprint has to say anyway of course they are happy about it.

  • Anonymous

Sprint is only happy because the idea to merge with T-Mobile was first their idea. Now that this merger is bust, are they poised to do the same thing without the DOJ stepping in? If they do and the DOJ said it’s fine, it would one of the biggest miscarriages of justice ever.
