Amazon's quad-core 'Hollywood' tablet may ship later than expected

Tablets

Amazon’s second tablet, initially thought to be scheduled for a late 2011 or early 2012 launch, may not begin shipping to users until after the first quarter next year. According to a report from DigiTimes on Wednesday, Amazon will use manufacturing giant Foxconn to assemble its 10-inch tablets, and mass production is not set to begin until some time in the first quarter of 2012. Depending on when production ramps up, this likely means the tablet will not be released until the second quarter at the earliest. BGR exclusively reported back in May that Amazon was developing a flagship “Hollywood” tablet powered by NVIDIA’s upcoming quad-core Kal-El chipset alongside its 7-inch “Coyote” slate. Amazon will reportedly unveil the dual-core Coyote later this fall.

With the Kal-El chip, the cores are dynamic.  If they’re not needed, they’re shut down.  Most of the time you’ll be running on a single core, and the other cores will come on-line as needed.  The result will be the right amount of CPU horsepower when you need it, based upon load – and really no impact to battery life or power consumption.

Only if Apple made it. Like those iPad 2′s that overheated. Usually two cores enable less power consumption

    Too bad.

Typical DROID delays. Just wait to get an update….lol!!!!

This isn’t a DROID, this is an Android phone. DROIDs are a subset of Android phones, not the other way around.

Its actually a Tablet. But point still made.

Stop trying to make a tablet that will give a Cray a run for its money. Tablets don’t need quad cores, it is a casual computing device. It needs to get on the interwebs, play Angry Birds, check email, that’s about it. Make an inexpensive tablet with quality materials that has a great app library and you will put a dent in Apple’s market share.

The Acer A100 does exactly what you say.

It couldn’t be that Apple’s prepaying for millions of components years in advance would cause sourcing problems for everyone else could it?

I’m not too disappointed. I don’t see a quad core processor as necessary at this point, and I’m more interested in the 7″ size anyway. For me, it’s all about the screen – if it allows me to replace both my Kindle and my iPad, I’m buying one on pre-order. If not, Amazon’s going to have to convince me that it does most things better than an iPad, which is not going to be easy to do.

According to my fellow Goofans (aka Apple Haters) as long as it turns on and it’s Android it will be better than an iPad.

Didn’t know you need quad-core processors to read black & white e-ink books.

The Hollywood will not be an ebook reader, it will be a full blown tablet. They are releasing a 7″ tablet that will be heavily tied into their services as well as a really high spec’d 10″ tablet AKA the Hollywood.

Of course this has nothing to do with Nvidia again over-promising, under-delivering and purposefully promising an unrealistic and overly optimistic release schedule for their next-gen Tegra SoC that will ‘blow everything away’, right? /s

By the time the first Kal-El hardware becomes available quad core OMAP’s, a next-generation Qualcomm SoC and the Apple A6 will be around the corner, and 2 months later Kal-El will again be the weakest ARM SoC of the bunch.

i was really hoping the amazon kal el tablet would come out this year so this is crushing “news.” i don’t know if i will wait till next year to get a tablet. if i can get the touchpad for $99-$150 or if the transformer2 comes out with kick ass specs and price to match then i might have to jump on it.
