Sprint GALAXY S II Epic 4G Touch hands-on

mobile

We are here at Samsung’s press event in New York City where the phone maker just took the wraps off of Sprint’s brand new GALAXY S II smartphone. The GALAXY S II Epic 4G Touch offers full support for Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network and is equipped with 16GB of storage, a large Super AMOLED Plus display, an 8-megapixel camera capable of recording 1080p video, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chats, and a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. We really like the textured back of the phone, which gives it a good grip, but the plastic build still feels just a bit cheap to us. We really wish Samsung would adopt stronger materials in its flagship devices, such as metals and soft-touch rubberized plastic. Still, the phone easily zips through Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and Samsung’s custom TouchWiz user interface. Sprint will be the first to launch the GALAXY S II Epic 4G Touch on September 16th and it’s priced at $199.99 with a new two-year contract.

That first picture there sure doesn’t look like Samsung’s touch wiz… Looks a bit more like stock android. What gives?

    • Akdude

Looks like the Sprint ID pack launcher.  I know on the Epic you could choose either the standard stock Android launcher, Sprint ID pack launcher, or touch wiz.

What an awful name for a product. And 4.52″ is too much for a phone screen.

Perhaps not all agree with you?

Folks have different needs for their phones.

    • JoNES.R,

…4.5 is NOT big enough for my TASTE. Im upgrading my EPIC to GALAXY S2 as soon as SPRINT TELE-SALES contacts me…but i will GLADLY trade in the GALAXY S2 for the GALAXY NOTE. I cant wait for that.

Why did AT&T decide to make theirs 4.3 in? Anywaysd I have Sprint so I will have this phone. Im not switching to Verizon for the Prime – this will get Icecream Sandwich eventually oro hell there will be ROMS

    • Anonymous

head to xda forums and you will find tons of roms for this beast of a phone and yeah it will be getting the icecream sandwich treatment once it comes out. you will not regret it my friend

They have the infuse for people who like extra big phones. Im glad they did 4.3. I would rather 4″ like my ATRIX. Its a perfect size

What is the screen resolution? I haven’t seen an article report on that.

    • Anonymous

      480 x 800

I’m on Sprint and was going to consider this but 4.5 inch screen is to big.

  • On The Market

4.5 inches is too dang big!  I played with the Infuse and its too big for a phone…this phone would be awkward to walk around with.  Sprint should have went with the 4.3″ size, its perfect.  Also, they didn’t increase resolution of the screen so Sprint version won’t be as sharp as the AT&T version.  Not to mention that more screen means more battery drain…Sprint didn’t get a bigger battery, did it???  Disappointing.  I have been waiting for a decent phone since February.  The 3D and camera on the new EVO turned me off and I’ve been waiting for this thing to come out.  I guess I’ll have to wait or settle.

@On The Market – To answer your question if Sprint got the bigger battery. AndroidPolice posted on Twitter last night that the Sprint version will have the bigger 1800mah battery vs’ At&t’s 1650mah.

O.o so this is a summary of the already published hardware specs and a pic of him holding the phone and that makes it a “HANDS-ON” review.
