One last batch of TouchPads on the way, HP says

Tablets

HP’s public relations manager Mark Budgell wrote a blog post Tuesday afternoon confirming a report from Reuters earlier in the day in which HP vice president Todd Bradley suggested the company would resurrect its TouchPad tablet. “Despite announcing an end to manufacturing webOS hardware, we have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand,” Budgell wrote. “We don’t know exactly when these units will be available or how many we’ll get, and we can’t promise we’ll have enough for everyone. We do know that it will be at least a few weeks before you can purchase.” HP says it will manufacture the tablets during the fourth fiscal quarter of this year, which ends on October 31st. It is unclear if the new batch will be priced from $99, which had previously resulted in a quick fire sale of the tablet.

Meh you lost my respect HP take your tablet and shove it where the sun don’t shine. If you weren’t willing to fight you should have kept your hands off of WebOs

I think he’s mad because HP sucks $#*! and ruined what could have been with their own incompetence.

i actually snagged one from WORST BUY and couldnt be happier (with the touchpad)….to that end i just want to say that the touchpad is not the end all be all of tablets but it does get the job done to much of my satisfaction.  I couldnt be happier with this deal.

and yes i am writting this on my touchpad :)

You’re damn right!!! They just released the device and after 3 months they give up on it, and the thing is that reviewers say that WebOS is the only IOS killer or what seems to be the greatest competition to Apple.

PUT ME ON YOUR WAITING LIST!!!! ( I JUST NEED ONE)

  • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

A dead OS?  No thanks.  And for those who want to put DROID OS on it?  Completely lame.

    • Darren Rockwell

What the fuck is DROID OS?

    • Gerardo Gudino

    • Drew

Samsung is thinking about purchasing it so as usual Norm… add that to the list of dumb shit that comes out of your mouth that you’re wrong about.

      haha

So they’re making another production run on a product they’ve declared dead and are likely losing a lot of money by charging $99 for it?

Apotheker’s doing a really good job.

    • Gerardo Gudino

From what I’ve read, they have some parts and materials left and it would be cheaper and better business wise to make one last batch and sell them, then to just waste all those parts and materials.  Got it?  Good.

    • Ashley Keith

and yet they are flooding the market with 100s of thousands of these devices. sounds like a good user base for OS / apps / ads / etc additions to ppl who can’t afford ipads

  • http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/ BoyRetardedReport

I would totally but one for $99!!

    WebOS is super cool :D

Like a previous article stated, I imagine it’s just not to piss off suppliers that they will need in the future that were affected by discontinuing it. Sitting on parts and then screwed by HP, that’s not nice.

  • http://twitter.com/jrcrow79 EK

I heard HP is workin on the apps section for the device..so no its not really dead

  • n00btastic

Don’t worry guys, this fish has a lot more flopping left in it before it goes to the frying pan.  I expect to see dramatic indecision followed by bold decisions followed by even bolder take-backs.  One executive declares war, another announces peace.  Before the end of this, HP’s business will be in producing leather seats for BMW and desktop printers that wirelessly connect to former WebOS devices.  I for one am buckling my seat belt.  This is going to be the year of the roller coaster for HP.

HP: We instil in-confidence into everyone!

Great. Ill be on fucking deployment so definitely no TP for me.

  • http://twitter.com/Waazzupppp Ron Lunsford

Sure, they have like 5 billion people pissed off right now because they ordered – were confirmed to have one – then a week later they get an email saying their order was cancelled… Not good for the old business reputation there…

I think they would be smart to bring back the mobile device division, but they need to actually release some products. The Veer was a nice baby phone, but not much substance… The Pre3 never made market… The Pre2 was still a Palm product and the TouchPad was never given a serious chance – mainly due to the fact there was no supporting devices for all the coolness that was the TouchPad… (Touch to Sync, wireless printing, etc…)

Hopefully the droppage of 200,000 devices on the market will give WebOS a boost in the ‘marketability’ area and they make some low end devices to keep the products flowing. I won’t hold my breath though…

I was lucky to get a 64gb TP for 250.  I’m using it right now.  It has dual 1.5proc.  The only thing missing is streaming Netflix.

I’m sure HP is a really nice company, but if one assumes that they’re losing money on every $99 TouchPad, then they are most certainly not making one more batch to meet “unfulfilled demand”.

They’re making one more batch because they still have extra inventory in some form or another and they determined they’d lose less money by fully manufacturing them.

Having said that, at $99 it’s a great deal, especially considering you can run Android on these things.

  • Greekmanx

can I point out it was not 3 months it was less and they are not cancel Web OS they are getting out of the hardware game that’s it.

  • Anonymous

    ummmm-here’s betting they don’t go for $99.

    • Anonymous

Nah, I don’t think they would do that – can you imagine the loud “Thud!” and the horrendous negative PR it would generate as all those now-more-expensive TouchPads did NOT sell at all? They would TOTALLY undo any “good will” they got with the really cheap ones.

  • Charlene Monday

I JUST READ THAT EVERYONE THAT SIGNED UP FOR AN EMAIL ALERT WAS NOTIFIED . THAS NOT TRUE BECAUSE I SIGNED AND DID NOT GET AN EMAIL. THANKS HP

  • Jduk

That just shows that HP is STILL clueless what customers wants. HP products are half-broken, lousy designed piece of junk that cannot compete with that kinda usual price tag. But with $99, oh yes why not, people would buy this junk for everyday usage. Bye HP.

  • http://twitter.com/demonstrator demonstrator

I think HP jumping out of the mobile market just because it didn’t kill in 16 months is pretty short sighted. You don’t just beat 30% market share in phones and 85% market share in tablets in such a short amount of time, and you have completely killed consumer confidence. Absolutely mind boggling. Hang in there and make the buyers you do have happy. The iPhone, albeit what it is today, did not make it to where it is today overnight. It took 5-6 years to assert it’s dominance. Fools you are, HP. Fools.

Even if it is/going to be a dead OS, as a “gadget” you cant go wrong  at 99 for a media device.  Dont regret my purchase at all.
