Apple iPhone 5 to feature thinner design, according to new leaks

mobile

Speculation surrounding Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S sure isn’t slowing down, and with Apple expected to take the wraps off the company’s latest smartphone lineup within weeks, more rumored iPhone 5 parts have started to leak out. According to the blog Greek iPhone, which published photos of what it is claiming to be new components from Apple’s upcoming iconic device, the iPhone 5 will be thinner than the current model and it will also feature volume buttons on the opposite side of where they sit now on the iPhone 4. Additionally, the camera module is “quite different” and thinner than the existing part, and it reportedly supports a higher resolution than the current module — it looks like an 8-megapixel sensor is all but confirmed. Hit the jump for additional images of the parts in question.

It can’t get any thinner than the DROID X II

    Another day, another iPhone rumour.

Stealth marketing at its best. Genius.

I’ve said it before, and I’m maintaining my position: I think Apple’s “2 iPhone” strategy means the end of the iPT. I believe they’re going to release a budget, wifi-only iPhone (Possibly the “4s”). Removing the 3G chip would allow it to be thinner and cheaper, and remove the obligation for users to purchase a data plan. This could be contract free and sold for around the same price as the iPT. It’s also in line with the iPad configuration – wifi and 3G models. And allowing the iPhone to take over what has always been an iPod/iTunes event is telling as well.

Your theory is not credible. The iPhone (or ANY cell phone for that matter) is primarily a device for making/receiving calls. If you remove the 3G radio, you can’t make/receive calls unless you happen to be in a Wi-Fi hotspot, thus it becomes a dud outside a Wi-Fi area, and it can’t be marketed as a phone. The iPad is not built to be used as a phone.

Wow. Should I even reply to this, or have you already realized the pivotal error of your statement? 3G is a data connection and uses a separate chip – cellular calls use CMDA/GSM. Removing the 3G chip would require using a wifi connection for data, but cellular calls would continue unabated.

lol…The new iPhone can catch up to my HTC Sensation that I’ll be dumping when the new Nexus phone drops in a couple of months.

    Really??! It’s thinner?

    HOLY FUCKING SHIT

Haven’t heard this since last week!!!!!!

I dunno I think phones are starting to get to the point where if they get much thinner, you will sacrifice being able to hold it well without dropping them.  Obviously this varies by phone, but some of the thinnest current models are about as thin as I’d want them.

What the hell, I thought it would be thicker!

And then they had MMS and then they had cut and paste and then they had
camera flash and then they had… Do you see where this is going?? Oh I get it… So the iPhone’s ‘lack’ of features is somehow….(wait for it…) a feature?? Sweet!!  Bottom line is, it’s a weak argument.

  • empathy

What ae we gonna do with these parts?

    No one really cares

  • Drew

@MacGoo —>That sounds like a real desperate strategy… Not really seeing a market for a wi-fi only phone. Is Android really kicking your ass that bad, Apple?? If you’re gonna be an iPod, be an iPod. This whole wi-fi only shit is nonsense.

    Fucking Disqus reply FAIL!!

It really says something about smartphone fans that the most popular post on BGR today amount to this: ”iPhone 5 will be thinner than the current model”. Thinner?!?! impossible. What a scoop BGR!!!

Wait there’s more: ”it will also feature volume buttons on the….opposite side of where they sit now.”  The opposite side!?! Could they really do it?? such a technological leap!

Just the fact that you can have a closely followed blog “report” these details (obvious in the first case, trivial in the latter) is testament to the rabid demand the new iPhone will see and the always astonishing success of the Apple hype machine.

Gadgetless let me know when you have 75 billion in cash.  Bill Gates gave away more cash than that, what do you care what Apple has in the bank.

Thinner?   Why not keep the same iPhone4 size… and use all that extra space for a larger battery????

  • michael

Losing another iphone at a bar…  hhmmmm just another ploy for advertising the phone.

Yeah….. Samsung Pre Crime Copied (like Minority Report) the 8 mp camera in their Galaxy SII designed by the precogs they’ve hired. So now Apple will sue them for using an 8mp camera too! …..I understand Apple is even going after Moses for his PreCrime Tablet design as well as Knight Ridder and Stan Kubrick for 2001 Space Odyssey iPad Precog Movie Design teams!

“Apple’s upcoming iconic device” – Really? You can make this assertion BGR?
